Our theme yesterday was Jesus asking the disciples ‘who do YOU say I am’? As our study groups begin again in September that may be a question that will come up in the many conversations. If we are not sure how to answer this question you may find it helpful to be part of one of our groups where you can discuss or just listen to what others have to say.

When Peter answered “Jesus”, it was a turning point in his life, the Holy Spirit working in him to reveal that Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God. Peter didn’t live a perfect life from that moment, far from it at times. He denied Jesus in his time of need, but he went on to share the Jesus message with thousands of people and helped the church become what it is today.

If you’re not sure who Jesus is then give one of our groups a try, then the decision is up to you!

Couldn’t resist sharing this picture with you.  As you will have seen in last week’s Lifeline Gill has knitted twenty-eight teddies so far and on Sunday, she appeared with this one! You may notice this teddy is wearing a patch over one eye – this will be me on Wednesday however the patch very easily can be removed!!

Thanks, Gill, for all the time and effort you have put into producing such an abundance of ‘teddies’!

WELCOME CAFÉ (from strangers to friends) & LISTENING SPACE

Welcome café last week was in the first week of the school summer holidays and we had lots of families visiting, enjoying the heritage activities but also the giant Jenga! It stood out how many people said they did not know the Minster had so much to offer families and they almost universally used the word ‘Welcome’ in their description of their experience.  One lovely lady said she felt as she entered the Minster she was wrapped in a blanket of welcome. What a lovely image. Our wonderful welcomers make it so easy to come through the door and the Welcome Café adds so much to the service a Minster is intended to offer. I realise I have used the word ‘welcome’ a lot, but I promise you it is the right word to use! Please come and join us on any Thursday between 10.30am and 3pm for coffee, tea and a warm Welcome. Soup served from 12ish.

From 12:30 soup will be served and drinks throughout the afternoon until 3 p.m.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

It is great to have ReNew and Hull City Council present during our Welcome Café held every Thursday in the Minster. These groups are there to help anyone with concerns or queries.

I must emphasise that this is available in the same way the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space are: to absolutely everyone.  That means you, your friends, family members, and even those who walk into the church for the very first time.

LITTLE FISHES

Little Fishes are having a lovely summer. We have met in some capacity for all of the

holidays from various park visits, Dino Day, and Honeysuckle Farm. It has been a lovely summer so far and a lifeline for families to meet and support each other. Several families have joined in events provided by the Minster, like Scrapstore and Messy Church and we are looking forward to the Teddy Bears' Picnic on Wednesday 30th August! The holidays can seem long but with friendship as our focus it has been lovely. 

Thirteen families went to Honeysuckle Farm on 11th August, it was a great chance to see, feed and interact the animals, play on hay bales and outdoor equipment, get lost in the maze, share lunch and be together. The goats naturally loved getting fed and some of our children were really brave to feed them (some of the goats even bigger than them!)  Many of the children fed the massive fish along with a few ducks. Everyone had a fun time exploring the environment. 

We are looking forward to meeting in the park on Friday and Williams Den at the end of summer holidays.

Many people are enquiring how Jane is after being taken ill just over a week ago. Although she is still very poorly, there are signs of progress. If you wish to send Jane a card please b ring into the Minster and they will be delivered to her home address.

There is only family visiting at the moment. We will update you each week in Lifeline.

Apologies to all our friends that receive the Lifeline through the post. No Lifeline was sent out last week as both myself and Val were smitten by the Covid virus and feeling very unwell!

It was great to be back in the Minster again yesterday, in time to join with around eighty people to hear the lunchtime concert – Vox Trinitas: Of All The Byrds - performed by eight members of the church choir.

The light-hearted selection of animal songs ranged from the Renaissance onwards and was well received by all.

PARACHUTE!

Our latest addition was well received on Thursday both by the children and the adults. Keep your eyes peeled you’ll be seeing parachute games taking place at many Minster activities. Thanks to the Henry Smith Fund for helping us to purchase this!

GIRLS BRIGADE

Three girls from 1st Hull went to Hull & East Yorkshire District Girls Brigade camp at the end of July. (There were approximately thirty-five of us altogether) Aurora and I went as well. It was their first time away with Girls' Brigade. We had a wonderful time together. On Friday evening we shared a lovely meal and got to know the girls from other groups and settled into our rooms. On Saturday we went to Flamingo Land, splitting into those who liked fast rides and those who did. They were very daring. I heard lots of screams. Some of the girls I was with went on the car ride, wagon wheel wide and helicopters ride. Aurora and I went on the wagon wheel ride, it was great to see the views across the park. After lunch Auora and I went for a walk around the zoo with the hope of Aurora having a nap... it never happened. 

We met up with some of the group and had a walk around the animals and fishes which was lovely. Aurora was animated watching the fishes and enjoyed showing me and the other girls them. After our train ride around the park, we met up with the rest of the group and whilst some were spending in the shop, we watched the pirate show and got squirted with more water. It was great fun.  

We went to Ings Park Alpacas on the Sunday. The girls had the opportunity to walk and feed alpacas, sheep, and goats. We learned how to care and look after them and choose the alpacas we wanted to walk. Some alpacas needed a little encouragement to keep walking, but it was all part of the fun and the girls got to take them over little jumps (over logs.) It was a bit wet, but they still had a fabulous time. The girls and staff helped to look after and entertain Aurora, especially whilst I was fighting to get her crib back in the roof box of the car! 

They were honestly amazing, and I am so proud of them all but especially the girls (Hollie, Alice and Risa) from 1st Hull. They all got on, made friendships and were present in the moment. It was a great opportunity for our girls to meet others locally in Girls Brigade, increase their independence and celebrate 130 Years of Girls Brigade being present and enriching girls’ lives and making a positive difference to "Seek, Serve and Follow Christ."

Minster Lifeline 31

Rev Irene & Val both have covid and are unable to write this weeks lifeline. Our Director of Operations, Alasdair, has put together the following in their absence.
Don’t worry, normal service will resume next week.
We pray for speedy healing for both of them!

One of the biggest complaints I receive is around our sound system. We have an excellent quality system but it can be sometimes difficult to use especially in a very echo filled church like the Minster.
For most of us, we are able to hear services and events with no difficulty, but for others it is a constant source of headache and irritation.

As Matthew 7:7 says, “ask, and it shall be given to you” and I am pleased to announce that our new digital hearing loop system has been fitted and it is working.
The system works on your smartphone, using the churches WiFi. You can then either plug in headphones or an induction loop worn around the neck, or connect your hearing aids directly to the phone via bluetooth.
Information on how to do this is available in church, and we have plenty of headphones, induction loops and devices to borrow if you don’t have them yourself.

In other news, our apprentice, Bailey, turns 18 today (15th Aug). For those that don’t know Bailey, he has been with us for 13 months and leaves us at the end of this month. Many Happy Returns from all of us at Hull Minster- drinks on you!

This week we have Messy Church on Wednesday at 10am, The Welcome cafe on Thursday from 10:30 to 3:30, A Tribute to Queen on Friday which is the latest in the series of candlelight concerts and on Saturday the Vox Trinitas ensemble entertain us at 12noon as part of the Saturday concert series.
These plus services, exhibitions, our wonderful cafe and shop mean there is plenty to see and do all week at Hull Minster.

Finally, Rev Rob and our verger Jon Major were at the cenotaph this morning for VJ day. Around 50 people were present to mark the 78th anniversary of the end of the second world war.

What encouraging words from Olga, thank you. Val and I really enjoy putting Lifeline together each week. It is Val that does all the hard work and sends out to so many people each week. Please keep --*the news and pictures coming in!

We are very fortunate to have four clergy at the Minster however If you come into Sunday services you will realise that we are often down to just two. This is because wherever possible we are helping out churches that are in vacancy, and at the moment there are a lot without a vicar in all areas of the city and the East Riding.

We need more and more people to step up and volunteer for many jobs that need doing to make services possible in the Minster – great shortage at the moment is people to work the tech desk. It looks difficult but I can assure you once you have been shown it is straightforward to do.

Colossians 3:23 

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart,

as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 

since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

GIRLS BRIGADE

On our last night of Girls Brigade for the summer term we were treated to bowling and food. It was a great night, and all of the girls had a fab time. I of course needed the barriers up more than the girls! We had some great strikes and spares from the girls, along with a few heavy bangs on the floor as the bowling ball hit the runway with such force, I thought we were going through to the core! It was such a lovely way to welcome our new girls and families Thank you Hull Minster.

SATURDAY CONCERTS

Sorry for the misinformation last week – the next concert is on August 12th.

PLEASE NOTE: there are many road closures in and around at the present time.  In particular, the A63 is closed from Friday evening until Monday morning between the Hull Royal turn-off and the Minster. Please allow extra time for your journeys.

You may recall that over the past few weeks, we have asked for prayer for those Christians living in Manipur.  You may have seen in the news or online this week that there have been terrible things done to the women – making them parade naked.  The Prime Minister said it had ‘shamed’ the country.  We need to keep on praying for those living there and those working with the Christians.  Those living in foothill villages in close proximity to warring groups are the most vulnerable in Manipur’s conflict.

Thank you to all the volunteers that attended, supported, and catered at Margaret Nicholson’s funeral.  A volunteer final farewell for Margaret on her final journey!

Margaret’s family would like to thank everyone at the Minster who helped at or attended her funeral. We are sure she would have been very pleased and grateful for the number of people who did so. The Minster really was her second home, and it was lovely for us to meet so many people there who had been her friends, often for many years, and thought highly of her.
The collection for Amnesty raised £270 which also would have pleased Margaret as it was one of the charities she most keenly supported so thanks again to everyone who contributed.

GREAT FUN AT JUNIOR CHURCH

The lesson this week was based on John 6 – the feeding of the five thousand.  Having read and talked through the lesson, each person (young and old!), was given a piece of paper.  We used to make these when we were at school many(!) years ago and called them fortune tellers.  However, today they were aiming to make sure everyone understood the importance of this miracle performed by Jesus.

RACE FOR LIFE

Becca and I are taking part in a Race for Life 5k to raise money and save lives.  One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Every single pound you donate makes a difference to Cancer Research UK’s groundbreaking work, so please sponsor us if you can. We joined in a few times some years ago (whilst my hair was still brown!), and now we want to try to get a little money together again for close friends we care about who are fighting this disease, as well so many others. WELCOME CAFÉ (from strangers to friends) & LISTENING SPACE

Welcome Café is held every Thursday morning 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please do drop in and support whenever you can.  We hope to grow this facility and invite many different groups along. There will be newspapers, games, table talk and much more with coffee and cake supplied. It is extremely important that our church family pop along on occasion, as we need people to welcome and chat to those that may be visiting for the first time.

From 12:30 soup will be served and drinks throughout the afternoon until 3 p.m.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

In addition to ReNew being present in the church as part of the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space that is open to absolutely everyone each Thursday, on the 6th July, a representative of the Hull City Council Wilson Centre information team will also be there.

This person will be able to take concerns or enquiries you may have about any of the City Council departments, from footpaths, planning applications, to Council Tax. 

Initially, this will be available from 11:00 until 12:30.

Naturally, we need to see what response there will be to this new service. This, like the situation with ReNew, will be monitored in order to gauge the interest for such information. If necessary, we will extend the time the two organisations are in church.

I must emphasise that this is available in the same way the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space are: to absolutely everyone.  That means you, your friends, family members, and even those who walk into the church for the very first time.

If you have any questions about either of these two organisations, or how you could be part of the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space team, please don’t hesitate to ask either Rev Irene or Tim.

JUDAH’S BAPTISM

On Sunday, Judah, son of  Revs. Hannah and Rob Suekarran, brother to Reuben, was baptised during the 11 o’clock service.  His grandmother created this wonderful tree, each leaf of which holds a message.  The verse of scripture underneath beautifully sums it up:

SATURDAY MUSIC IN THE MINSTER

The luscious sound of fifty wind, brass, and percussion players could be heard resounding throughout the Minster last Saturday. The afternoon concert was a collaboration between the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra and the Eclectic Wind Orchestra. Their programme included contemporary concert band music such as the Paris Sketches by Martin Ellerby and O magnum mysterium by Morten Lauridsen.    Ben Newton

Featuring music ranging from the Spanish and classical repertoire to arrangements of popular hits, The Classical Guitar Ensemble of the East Riding of Yorkshire promises to lightly serenade its audience in a way that only the classical guitar can.

The programme is wide-ranging and includes: Celtic Ships – Leslie Searle, Jazz Band Blues – John Compton, and Summertime – George Gershwin, among many others.

The State force, our CHIEF Minister is against us. The center Govt watches us from afar. BJP govt is against Christianity. 

There are refugees everywhere. We are lebelled as illegal immigrants/ terrorists. We have to defennd land, our villages and towns by our own.

After more than 16 years and 1,000 races, fundraiser John Burkhill has reached his £1m target for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of his wife. Known as The Man With The Pram and instantly recognisable for his bright green wig, the 84-year-old from Sheffield began fundraising in 2007.

He was happy to have his photograph taken with Irene on Sunday morning when the roads were closed for the Hull half marathon and 10K.

PLEA FROM WELCOME HOUSE

We have been asked by Olga, our Ukrainian friend, whether we are able to collect small toys for use at Welcome House. Welcome House provides daytime facilities for Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Hull and the East Riding. Often these are families with small children and at the moment they do not have toys for the children to play with.

If you can help, please bring things into the Minster, and leave for Irene. Thank you!

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH

It was great fun this week as children had to make decisions about what LOVE IS and what LOVE IS NOT.  They had a pack of ‘hearts’ saying such things as ‘kind’, ‘patient’, ‘grumpy,’ ‘jealous’, and they had to decide on which large heart on the board to paste these.  They were supposed to walk quickly but as you can see, that turned out to be more like running.  It was great and everyone enjoyed it, whilst learning important lessons

GIRLS BRIGADE

It was good to have the Girls’ Brigade taking part in the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service, as they led our prayers and encouraged us in singing.  There were badges given out and one new recruit welcomed into the group.

Education Matters!

It was such a pleasure to be joined by Corey, Ellis, Jacob and Josh,this week when they visited the Jewish Living Experience Exhibition.  They first came to Hull Minster for a primary school education visit when they were pupil at Bude Park Primary School.

Now apprentices at Ron Dearing UTC, they remembered the communion activity they did with Jane and Irene and were able to relate this to what they saw in the exhibition.  We often wonder what impact education has on the youngsters we meet and have to wait a long time to find out.   They feel welcome and comfortable at Hull Minster and often meet up with their friends during their long Thursday lunch break. I think we can call this success! Jane Owen

REV. IRENE writes:

It was great to see so many people drop in on Thursday last week. Many grandmas were delighted to find activities for the grandchildren in the Minster and an opportunity to look around the building and even take part in the archaeological ‘dig’ prepared by Jane Owen.

One lovely lady (photograph on right), came in with her husband, daughter and partner and two grandchildren, they had a great time and joined us for drinks and refreshments. She was so enthusiastic about the Minster and all that was happening, she made this wonderful comment….

‘when I entered the building and saw all the activities

I felt I was wrapped in a blanket of welcome and warmth’

We pray that every person that comes through the Minster’s doors may feel just the same.  Thank you to everyone that makes it happen!

FAMILY CREATIVE WORKSHOP

Hull Minster hosted a Make, Create and Play session on Wednesday 26th July, 2-4pm. The session was based on the theme of caring for our world, and led by Hull Scrapstore. Using materials from local businesses that would have otherwise gone to recycling or landfill, people of all ages made models of trees, birds, bird feeders, whales, or anything that people wanted. The only limit was our imagination!

The session was lots of fun, particularly for those of us wanting to do something fun and creative with our children during the school holidays. We are very grateful to Sarah and Derek from Scrapstore for leading us so well, and for all the new friends we made during the session.

A huge thank you to everyone who has worked so hard this past week - we have enjoyed some great events with the families afternoon on Wednesday - full of families enjoying crafts together, the heritage talk on Thursday evening, and then a fantastic weekend with over 2,000 people at the Back to Life festival followed by a wonderful service on Sunday as six adults were baptised and/or confirmed. This is Hull Minster at its best - with the doors wide open to welcome thousands of people, the cafe and shop buzzing, and the joy of celebrating in worship and prayer with people committing their lives to follow Jesus. This is only possible because of the commitment and hard work of the whole team - volunteers, staff, laity, and clergy. Heartfelt thanks to everyone. Dominic Black

Welcome café last week was in the first week of the school summer holidays and we had lots of families visiting, enjoying the heritage activities but also the giant Jenga! It stood out how many people said they did not know the Minster had so much to offer families and they almost universally used the word ‘Welcome’ in their description of their experience.  One lovely lady said she felt as she entered the Minster she was wrapped in a blanket of welcome. What a lovely image. Our wonderful welcomers make it so easy to come through the door and the Welcome Café adds so much to the service a Minster is intended to offer. I realise I have used the word ‘welcome’ a lot, but I promise you it is the right word to use! Please come and join us on any Thursday between 10.30am and 3pm for coffee, tea and a warm Welcome. Soup served from 12ish.

You may recall that over the past few weeks, we have asked for prayer for those Christians living in Manipur.  You may have seen in the news or online this week that there have been terrible things done to the women – making them parade naked.  The Prime Minister said it had ‘shamed’ the country.  We need to keep on praying for those living there and those working with the Christians.  Those living in foothill villages in close proximity to warring groups are the most vulnerable in Manipur’s conflict.

Thank you to all the volunteers that attended, supported, and catered at Margaret Nicholson’s funeral.  A volunteer final farewell for Margaret on her final journey!

Margaret’s family would like to thank everyone at the Minster who helped at or attended her funeral. We are sure she would have been very pleased and grateful for the number of people who did so. The Minster really was her second home, and it was lovely for us to meet so many people there who had been her friends, often for many years, and thought highly of her.
The collection for Amnesty raised £270 which also would have pleased Margaret as it was one of the charities she most keenly supported so thanks again to everyone who contributed.

GREAT FUN AT JUNIOR CHURCH

The lesson this week was based on John 6 – the feeding of the five thousand.  Having read and talked through the lesson, each person (young and old!), was given a piece of paper.  We used to make these when we were at school many(!) years ago and called them fortune tellers.  However, today they were aiming to make sure everyone understood the importance of this miracle performed by Jesus.

Becca and I are taking part in a Race for Life 5k to raise money and save lives.  One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. We joined in a few times some years ago (whilst my hair was still brown!), and now we want to try to get a little money together again for close friends we care about who are fighting this disease, as well so many others. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

In addition to ReNew being present in the church as part of the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space that is open to absolutely everyone each Thursday, on the 6th July, a representative of the Hull City Council Wilson Centre information team will also be there.

This person will be able to take concerns or enquiries you may have about any of the City Council departments, from footpaths, planning applications, to Council Tax. 

Initially, this will be available from 11:00 until 12:30.

Naturally, we need to see what response there will be to this new service. This, like the situation with ReNew, will be monitored in order to gauge the interest for such information. If necessary, we will extend the time the two organisations are in church.

I must emphasise that this is available in the same way the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space are: to absolutely everyone.  That means you, your friends, family members, and even those who walk into the church for the very first time.

JUDAH’S BAPTISM

On Sunday, Judah, son of  Revs. Hannah and Rob Suekarran, brother to Reuben, was baptised during the 11 o’clock service.  His grandmother created this wonderful tree, each leaf of which holds a message.  The verse of scripture underneath beautifully sums it up:

SATURDAY MUSIC IN THE MINSTER

The luscious sound of fifty wind, brass, and percussion players could be heard resounding throughout the Minster last Saturday. The afternoon concert was a collaboration between the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra and the Eclectic Wind Orchestra. Their programme included contemporary concert band music such as the Paris Sketches by Martin Ellerby and O magnum mysterium by Morten Lauridsen.    Ben Newton

Featuring music ranging from the Spanish and classical repertoire to arrangements of popular hits, The Classical Guitar Ensemble of the East Riding of Yorkshire promises to lightly serenade its audience in a way that only the classical guitar can.

I have recently received the attached email message from Kamsat with very disturbing news regarding the freedom of Christian worship out in Manipur; an area known as ‘land of gems’, in NE India. After you have read the message, please remember their communities in your prayers and pass on our concerns wherever possible.

I want you share this story in Church. Right now I am save as I am in neighboring state. Internet has been suspended for 26 day now.

The State force, our CHIEF Minister is against us. The center Govt watches us from afar. BJP govt is against Christianity. 

There are refugees everywhere. We are lebelled as illegal immigrants/ terrorists. We have to defennd land, our villages and towns by our own.

We need world attention.

After more than 16 years and 1,000 races, fundraiser John Burkhill has reached his £1m target for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of his wife. Known as The Man With The Pram and instantly recognisable for his bright green wig, the 84-year-old from Sheffield began fundraising in 2007.

He was happy to have his photograph taken with Irene on Sunday morning when the roads were closed for the Hull half marathon and 10K.

PLEA FROM WELCOME HOUSE

We have been asked by Olga, our Ukrainian friend, whether we are able to collect small toys for use at Welcome House. Welcome House provides daytime facilities for Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Hull and the East Riding. Often these are families with small children and at the moment they do not have toys for the children to play with.

If you can help, please bring things into the Minster, and leave for Irene. Thank you!

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH

It was great fun this week as children had to make decisions about what LOVE IS and what LOVE IS NOT.  They had a pack of ‘hearts’ saying such things as ‘kind’, ‘patient’, ‘grumpy,’ ‘jealous’, and they had to decide on which large heart on the board to paste these.  They were supposed to walk quickly but as you can see, that turned out to be more like running.  It was great and everyone enjoyed it, whilst learning important lessons

Hull Minster will now be collecting food for the Hull for Heroes foodbank. They need ambient long-lasting food like tins, pasta, sauces etc. also toiletries. The donation point will be behind the Welcome desk, so clear out your cupboards!

GIRLS BRIGADE

It was good to have the Girls’ Brigade taking part in the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service, as they led our prayers and encouraged us in singing.  There were badges given out and one new recruit welcomed into the group.

Education Matters!

It was such a pleasure to be joined by Corey, Ellis, Jacob and Josh,this week when they visited the Jewish Living Experience Exhibition.  They first came to Hull Minster for a primary school education visit when they were pupil at Bude Park Primary School.

Now apprentices at Ron Dearing UTC, they remembered the communion activity they did with Jane and Irene and were able to relate this to what they saw in the exhibition.  We often wonder what impact education has on the youngsters we meet and have to wait a long time to find out.   They feel welcome and comfortable at Hull Minster and often meet up with their friends during their long Thursday lunch break. I think we can call this success! Jane Owen

TOYS FOR UKRAINE

The collection of toys for Welcome House has been a great success.

THANK YOU to everyone who has contributed, particularly our friends in Scarborough who have filled my car to overflowing on more than one occasion! One of our volunteers and myself spent all of Saturday morning, sorting and bagging teddies, books, and toys so they are ready to be distributed.

We see many Ukranian friends regularly in the Minster and throughout August a Ukranian artist will be displaying her work down the north side of the church for all to see.

The people we see are happy to have been hosted by someone local and many now have flats or houses of their own. Frequently they tell me of others that would love to have a host family so if you are in the position to host a family for three or six months do let me know and I will put you in touch with the appropriate person.

We have so much, they have so little, and unfortunately, the fighting continues.

WE PRAY…….

Heavenly Father, hear our prayers for our brothers and sisters in Ukraine. Lord, we ask for peace for those who need peace, reconciliation for those who need reconciliation, and comfort for all who don't know what tomorrow will bring. Lord may your Kingdom come, and Your will be done.

As Chaplain of the 11MCM made up of the Northella, Junella, Cordella, Farnella and Pict, I felt very privileged to be present as the crews of these and other vessels, that were part of the Falklands conflict, received Freedom of the City of Kingston upon Hull.  It was particularly special as our Verger, Jon Major, was one of those honored. This little boy’s grandad was one of those receiving this honour, unfortunately, I did not get his name, however, the young boy was so proud to wear his grandad’s cap!

WELCOME CAFÉ (from strangers to friends) & LISTENING SPACE

Welcome Café is held every Thursday morning 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please do quickly visit and support whenever you can.  We hope to grow this facility and invite many different groups along. There will be newspapers, games, table talk and much more with coffee and cake supplied. It is extremely important that our church family pop along on occasion, as we need people to welcome and chat to those that may be visiting for the first time.

From 12:30 soup will be served and drinks throughout the afternoon until 3 p.m.

It is great to have ReNew and Hull City Council present during our Welcome Café held every Thursday in the Minster. These groups are there to help anyone with concerns or queries.

I must emphasise that this is available in the same way the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space are: to absolutely everyone.  That means you, your friends, family members, and even those who walk into the church for the very first time.

You may recall that over the past few weeks, we have asked for prayer for those Christians living in Manipur.  You may have seen in the news or online this week that there have been terrible things done to the women – making them parade naked.  The Prime Minister said it had ‘shamed’ the country.  We need to keep on praying for those living there and those working with the Christians.  Those living in foothill villages in close proximity to warring groups are the most vulnerable in Manipur’s conflict.

Thank you to all the volunteers that attended, supported, and catered at Margaret Nicholson’s funeral.  A volunteer final farewell for Margaret on her final journey!

Margaret’s family would like to thank everyone at the Minster who helped at or attended her funeral. We are sure she would have been very pleased and grateful for the number of people who did so. The Minster really was her second home, and it was lovely for us to meet so many people there who had been her friends, often for many years, and thought highly of her.
The collection for Amnesty raised £270 which also would have pleased Margaret as it was one of the charities she most keenly supported so thanks again to everyone who contributed.

GREAT FUN AT JUNIOR CHURCH

The lesson this week was based on John 6 – the feeding of the five thousand.  Having read and talked through the lesson, each person (young and old!), was given a piece of paper.  We used to make these when we were at school many(!) years ago and called them fortune tellers.  However, today they were aiming to make sure everyone understood the importance of this miracle performed by Jesus.

RACE FOR LIFE

Becca and I are taking part in a Race for Life 5k to raise money and save lives.  One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Every single pound you donate makes a difference to Cancer Research UK’s groundbreaking work, so please sponsor us if you can. We joined in a few times some years ago (whilst my hair was still brown!), and now we want to try to get a little money together again for close friends we care about who are fighting this disease, as well so many others. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

In addition to ReNew being present in the church as part of the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space that is open to absolutely everyone each Thursday, on the 6th July, a representative of the Hull City Council Wilson Centre information team will also be there.

This person will be able to take concerns or enquiries you may have about any of the City Council departments, from footpaths, planning applications, to Council Tax. 

Initially, this will be available from 11:00 until 12:30.

Naturally, we need to see what response there will be to this new service. This, like the situation with ReNew, will be monitored in order to gauge the interest for such information. If necessary, we will extend the time the two organisations are in church.

I must emphasise that this is available in the same way the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space are: to absolutely everyone.  That means you, your friends, family members, and even those who walk into the church for the very first time.

JUDAH’S BAPTISM

On Sunday, Judah, son of  Revs. Hannah and Rob Suekarran, brother to Reuben, was baptised during the 11 o’clock service.  His grandmother created this wonderful tree, each leaf of which holds a message.  The verse of scripture underneath beautifully sums it up:

“Before I formed you in the womb  I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.”   Jeremiah 1:5

SATURDAY MUSIC IN THE MINSTER

The luscious sound of fifty wind, brass, and percussion players could be heard resounding throughout the Minster last Saturday. The afternoon concert was a collaboration between the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra and the Eclectic Wind Orchestra. Their programme included contemporary concert band music such as the Paris Sketches by Martin Ellerby and O magnum mysterium by Morten Lauridsen.    Ben Newton

Featuring music ranging from the Spanish and classical repertoire to arrangements of popular hits, The Classical Guitar Ensemble of the East Riding of Yorkshire promises to lightly serenade its audience in a way that only the classical guitar can.

The programme is wide-ranging and includes: Celtic Ships – Leslie Searle, Jazz Band Blues – John Compton, and Summertime – George Gershwin, among many others.

I have recently received the attached email message from Kamsat with very disturbing news regarding the freedom of Christian worship out in Manipur; an area known as ‘land of gems’, in NE India. After you have read the message, please remember their communities in your prayers and pass on our concerns wherever possible.

They raped our women, killed even children and the elderly. 50.000 people are displaced everywhere in the country. Please search (if you have time) Manipur violence on the net. 

I want you share this story in Church. Right now I am save as I am in neighboring state. Internet has been suspended for 26 day now.

The State force, our CHIEF Minister is against us. The center Govt watches us from afar. BJP govt is against Christianity. 

There are refugees everywhere. We are lebelled as illegal immigrants/ terrorists. We have to defennd land, our villages and towns by our own.

We need world attention.

After more than 16 years and 1,000 races, fundraiser John Burkhill has reached his £1m target for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of his wife. Known as The Man With The Pram and instantly recognisable for his bright green wig, the 84-year-old from Sheffield began fundraising in 2007.

He was happy to have his photograph taken with Irene on Sunday morning when the roads were closed for the Hull half marathon and 10K.

PLEA FROM WELCOME HOUSE

We have been asked by Olga, our Ukrainian friend, whether we are able to collect small toys for use at Welcome House. Welcome House provides daytime facilities for Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Hull and the East Riding. Often these are families with small children and at the moment they do not have toys for the children to play with.

If you can help, please bring things into the Minster, and leave for Irene. Thank you!

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH

It was great fun this week as children had to make decisions about what LOVE IS and what LOVE IS NOT.  They had a pack of ‘hearts’ saying such things as ‘kind’, ‘patient’, ‘grumpy,’ ‘jealous’, and they had to decide on which large heart on the board to paste these.  They were supposed to walk quickly but as you can see, that turned out to be more like running.  It was great and everyone enjoyed it, whilst learning important lessons

Hull Minster will now be collecting food for the Hull for Heroes foodbank. They need ambient long-lasting food like tins, pasta, sauces etc. also toiletries. The donation point will be behind the Welcome desk, so clear out your cupboards!

GIRLS BRIGADE

It was good to have the Girls’ Brigade taking part in the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service, as they led our prayers and encouraged us in singing.  There were badges given out and one new recruit welcomed into the group.

Education Matters!

It was such a pleasure to be joined by Corey, Ellis, Jacob and Josh,this week when they visited the Jewish Living Experience Exhibition.  They first came to Hull Minster for a primary school education visit when they were pupil at Bude Park Primary School.

Now apprentices at Ron Dearing UTC, they remembered the communion activity they did with Jane and Irene and were able to relate this to what they saw in the exhibition.  We often wonder what impact education has on the youngsters we meet and have to wait a long time to find out.   They feel welcome and comfortable at Hull Minster and often meet up with their friends during their long Thursday lunch break. I think we can call this success! Jane Owen

Minster Lifeline 27

REV. IRENE writes:

It was such a privilege to lead Peter Lord’s service on Wednesday afternoon last week and to share in three of his favourite hymns that have meant so much to him throughout his life.

Peter titled his talk ‘Life as an archive’ and we shared the ups and downs of living as part of an RAF family before joining the Air Force himself and spending many years both in this country and abroad carrying out his duties.

Peter’s faith shone through as he spoke. He still loves the occasional 1662 service and enjoys sharing his Sundays between the Minster and St. Mary’s Lowgate. After the service we all enjoyed afternoon tea, provided by, and served by our very loyal helpers. Peter sends a big ‘thank you’ to everyone involved.

The final hymn we sang was:

‘Oh Jesus I have promised to serve thee to the end’

These words mean a lot to Peter as we still see him, in his eighties, making sure he keeps to that promise.

WELCOME CAFÉ (from strangers to friends) & LISTENING SPACE

Welcome Café is held every Thursday morning 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please do quickly visit and support whenever you can.  We hope to grow this facility and invite many different groups along. There will be newspapers, games, table talk and much more with coffee and cake supplied. It is extremely important that our church family pop along on occasion, as we need people to welcome and chat to those that may be visiting for the first time.

From 12:30 soup will be served and drinks throughout the afternoon until 3 p.m.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

In addition to ReNew being present in the church as part of the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space that is open to absolutely everyone each Thursday, on the 6th July, a representative of the Hull City Council Wilson Centre information team will also be there.

This person will be able to take concerns or enquiries you may have about any of the City Council departments, from footpaths, planning applications, to Council Tax. 

Initially, this will be available from 11:00 until 12:30.

Naturally, we need to see what response there will be to this new service. This, like the situation with ReNew, will be monitored in order to gauge the interest for such information. If necessary, we will extend the time the two organisations are in church.

I must emphasise that this is available in the same way the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space are: to absolutely everyone.  That means you, your friends, family members, and even those who walk into the church for the very first time.

If you have any questions about either of these two organisations, or how you could be part of the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space team, please don’t hesitate to ask either Rev Irene or Tim. 

Thursday evening saw the Gala Awards Ceremony for the Constructing Excellence Awards in Yorkshire and Humber. The Hull Minster Team, including Alan Woods and Partners, were Highly Commended in the category of Conservation and Regeneration. A fantastic recognition of the amazing transformation of Hull Minster!

GREAT FUN AT JUNIOR CHURCH

This week in Junior Church, we were studying the story of Jesus the Healer. 

The kids got an opportunity to learn some first aid, and had a go at healing our Teddy, as well as Boris the bone man, whose bones had been all muddled up!

SATURDAY CONCERTS

Rachel Dent gave us a magical performance on her two harps this Saturday lunchtime, showcasing some of the most beautiful harp repertoire there is. Many thanks to her and to the many who came to listen!

Next time: North Ferriby Ladies will entertain us with their sumptuous singing.

RACE FOR LIFE

TEDDY BEARS PICNIC

On 30th August 2023 we are holding our annual Teddy Bears Picnic and we are in need of Childrens' books, toys (good condition and complete) and also teddies for the tombola, again must be in good clean condition.

You can drop them off and give to Rev Irene or Shirley  Ask your friends & neighbours.

Thank you to all the volunteers that attended, supported, and catered at Margaret Nicholson’s funeral.  A volunteer final farewell for Margaret on her final journey!

Margaret’s family would like to thank everyone at the Minster who helped at or attended her funeral. We are sure she would have been very pleased and grateful for the number of people who did so. The Minster really was her second home, and it was lovely for us to meet so many people there who had been her friends, often for many years, and thought highly of her.
The collection for Amnesty raised £270 which also would have pleased Margaret as it was one of the charities she most keenly supported so thanks again to everyone who contributed.

GREAT FUN AT JUNIOR CHURCH

The lesson this week was based on John 6 – the feeding of the five thousand.  Having read and talked through the lesson, each person (young and old!), was given a piece of paper.  We used to make these when we were at school many(!) years ago and called them fortune tellers.  However, today they were aiming to make sure everyone understood the importance of this miracle performed by Jesus.

Following on from the article in the last two editions of Lifeline, we would ask that you continue to pray for Pastor Kamsat and his family.  The suffering the people of that region are enduring is beyond anything we can imagine, so we need to support them with our prayers.  Let us commit to praying for them daily – it is the least we can do and the most we can do.

RACE FOR LIFE

Becca and I are taking part in a Race for Life 5k to raise money and save lives.  One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Every single pound you donate makes a difference to Cancer Research UK’s groundbreaking work, so please sponsor us if you can. We joined in a few times some years ago (whilst my hair was still brown!), and now we want to try to get a little money together again for close friends we care about who are fighting this disease, as well so many others. JUDAH’S BAPTISM

On Sunday, Judah, son of  Revs. Hannah and Rob Suekarran, brother to Reuben, was baptised during the 11 o’clock service.  His grandmother created this wonderful tree, each leaf of which holds a message.  The verse of scripture underneath beautifully sums it up:

“Before I formed you in the womb  I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.”   Jeremiah 1:5

SATURDAY MUSIC IN THE MINSTER

The luscious sound of fifty wind, brass, and percussion players could be heard resounding throughout the Minster last Saturday. The afternoon concert was a collaboration between the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra and the Eclectic Wind Orchestra. Their programme included contemporary concert band music such as the Paris Sketches by Martin Ellerby and O magnum mysterium by Morten Lauridsen.    Ben Newton

Featuring music ranging from the Spanish and classical repertoire to arrangements of popular hits, The Classical Guitar Ensemble of the East Riding of Yorkshire promises to lightly serenade its audience in a way that only the classical guitar can.

The programme is wide-ranging and includes: Celtic Ships – Leslie Searle, Jazz Band Blues – John Compton, and Summertime – George Gershwin, among many others.

I have recently received the attached email message from Kamsat with very disturbing news regarding the freedom of Christian worship out in Manipur; an area known as ‘land of gems’, in NE India. After you have read the message, please remember their communities in your prayers and pass on our concerns wherever possible.

My people in Manipur are suffering, more than hundreds of Churches are burnt to ashes by some radical meitei people. The meitei are Hindus. They raped our women, killed even children and the elderly. 50.000 people are displaced everywhere in the country. Please search (if you have time) Manipur violence on the net. 

I want you share this story in Church. Right now I am save as I am in neighboring state. Internet has been suspended for 26 day now.

The State force, our CHIEF Minister is against us. The center Govt watches us from afar. BJP govt is against Christianity. 

There are refugees everywhere. We are lebelled as illegal immigrants/ terrorists. We have to defennd land, our villages and towns by our own.

We need world attention.

After more than 16 years and 1,000 races, fundraiser John Burkhill has reached his £1m target for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of his wife. Known as The Man With The Pram and instantly recognisable for his bright green wig, the 84-year-old from Sheffield began fundraising in 2007.

He was happy to have his photograph taken with Irene on Sunday morning when the roads were closed for the Hull half marathon and 10K.

PLEA FROM WELCOME HOUSE

We have been asked by Olga, our Ukrainian friend, whether we are able to collect small toys for use at Welcome House. Welcome House provides daytime facilities for Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Hull and the East Riding. Often these are families with small children and at the moment they do not have toys for the children to play with.

If you can help, please bring things into the Minster, and leave for Irene. Thank you!

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH

It was great fun this week as children had to make decisions about what LOVE IS and what LOVE IS NOT.  They had a pack of ‘hearts’ saying such things as ‘kind’, ‘patient’, ‘grumpy,’ ‘jealous’, and they had to decide on which large heart on the board to paste these.  They were supposed to walk quickly but as you can see, that turned out to be more like running.  It was great and everyone enjoyed it, whilst learning important lessons

Hull Minster will now be collecting food for the Hull for Heroes foodbank. They need ambient long-lasting food like tins, pasta, sauces etc. also toiletries. The donation point will be behind the Welcome desk, so clear out your cupboards!

Ecclesiastical is Hull Minster's insurer. This year they are running a donation scheme where they will donate £130 to the Minster for every new household insurance policy taken out. GIRLS BRIGADE

It was good to have the Girls’ Brigade taking part in the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service, as they led our prayers and encouraged us in singing.  There were badges given out and one new recruit welcomed into the group.

Education Matters!

It was such a pleasure to be joined by Corey, Ellis, Jacob and Josh,this week when they visited the Jewish Living Experience Exhibition.  They first came to Hull Minster for a primary school education visit when they were pupil at Bude Park Primary School.

Now apprentices at Ron Dearing UTC, they remembered the communion activity they did with Jane and Irene and were able to relate this to what they saw in the exhibition.  We often wonder what impact education has on the youngsters we meet and have to wait a long time to find out.   They feel welcome and comfortable at Hull Minster and often meet up with their friends during their long Thursday lunch break. I think we can call this success! Jane Owen

Recovering from an eye operation this week I have had lots of time to sit and watch the TV – something I rarely do. I have had a choice: Wimbledon, cricket, F1 from Silverstone, Tour de France or even EUFA under twenty-one football final. It made me think back to Goodwood Revival, a motor race meeting on the south coast, I went to some years ago. Amidst all the thousands of people and cars, I noticed on the programme 8 a.m. Sunday morning Holy Communion outside the main marquee. I ventured along to this with probably 100 other people, and we shared communion together in the open air. A couple of years later at one of the regular MG car club weekends we attend each year, I suggested a Holy Communion on the Sunday morning. From around 120 people involved with the event, probably six came along however five years later, up to twenty join with me.

As I watched the sport this week, I wondered how many will be joining to share the Lord’s Supper as their day begins. Hopefully chaplains for these organisations will be there and ready, what a start to the day at Wimbledon or Silverstone etc. If this doesn’t happen, it makes me wonder just where would Jesus want us to be today – each in our church building (as important as that is) or as many as possible mixing in with the thousands bringing Jesus into the midst of the people.

What was it Jesus told us in Matthew 18.20?

‘Where two or three are gathered in my name there I am in the midst of them’

This person will be able to take concerns or enquiries you may have about any of the City Council departments, from footpaths, planning applications, to Council Tax. 

Initially, this will be available from 11:00 until 12:30.

Naturally, we need to see what response there will be to this new service. This, like the situation with ReNew, will be monitored in order to gauge the interest for such information. If necessary, we will extend the time the two organisations are in church.

I must emphasise that this is available in the same way the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space are: to absolutely everyone.  That means you, your friends, family members, and even those who walk into the church for the very first time.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Thursday evening saw the Gala Awards Ceremony for the Constructing Excellence Awards in Yorkshire and Humber. The Hull Minster Team, including Alan Woods and Partners, were Highly Commended in the category of Conservation and Regeneration. A fantastic recognition of the amazing transformation of Hull Minster! 

GREAT FUN AT JUNIOR CHURCH

The lesson this week was based on John 6 – the feeding of the five thousand.  Having read and talked through the lesson, each person (young and old!), was given a piece of paper.  We used to make these when we were at school many(!) years ago and called them fortune tellers.  However, today they were aiming to make sure everyone understood the importance of this miracle performed by Jesus.

Becca and I are taking part in a Race for Life 5k to raise money and save lives.  One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. JUDAH’S BAPTISM

On Sunday, Judah, son of  Revs. Hannah and Rob Suekarran, brother to Reuben, was baptised during the 11 o’clock service.  His grandmother created this wonderful tree, each leaf of which holds a message.  The verse of scripture underneath beautifully sums it up:

SATURDAY MUSIC IN THE MINSTER

The luscious sound of fifty wind, brass, and percussion players could be heard resounding throughout the Minster last Saturday. The afternoon concert was a collaboration between the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra and the Eclectic Wind Orchestra. Their programme included contemporary concert band music such as the Paris Sketches by Martin Ellerby and O magnum mysterium by Morten Lauridsen.    Ben Newton

I want you share this story in Church. Right now I am save as I am in neighboring state. Internet has been suspended for 26 day now.

The State force, our CHIEF Minister is against us. The center Govt watches us from afar. BJP govt is against Christianity. 

There are refugees everywhere. We are lebelled as illegal immigrants/ terrorists. We have to defennd land, our villages and towns by our own.

We need world attention.

After more than 16 years and 1,000 races, fundraiser John Burkhill has reached his £1m target for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of his wife. Known as The Man With The Pram and instantly recognisable for his bright green wig, the 84-year-old from Sheffield began fundraising in 2007.

He was happy to have his photograph taken with Irene on Sunday morning when the roads were closed for the Hull half marathon and 10K.

We have been asked by Olga, our Ukrainian friend, whether we are able to collect small toys for use at Welcome House. Welcome House provides daytime facilities for Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Hull and the East Riding. Often these are families with small children and at the moment they do not have toys for the children to play with.

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH

It was great fun this week as children had to make decisions about what LOVE IS and what LOVE IS NOT.  They had a pack of ‘hearts’ saying such things as ‘kind’, ‘patient’, ‘grumpy,’ ‘jealous’, and they had to decide on which large heart on the board to paste these.  They were supposed to walk quickly but as you can see, that turned out to be more like running.  It was great and everyone enjoyed it, whilst learning important lessons

GIRLS BRIGADE

It was good to have the Girls’ Brigade taking part in the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service, as they led our prayers and encouraged us in singing.  There were badges given out and one new recruit welcomed into the group.

Education Matters!

It was such a pleasure to be joined by Corey, Ellis, Jacob and Josh,this week when they visited the Jewish Living Experience Exhibition.  They first came to Hull Minster for a primary school education visit when they were pupil at Bude Park Primary School.

Now apprentices at Ron Dearing UTC, they remembered the communion activity they did with Jane and Irene and were able to relate this to what they saw in the exhibition.  We often wonder what impact education has on the youngsters we meet and have to wait a long time to find out.   They feel welcome and comfortable at Hull Minster and often meet up with their friends during their long Thursday lunch break. I think we can call this success! Jane Owen

REV. IRENE writes:

On Tuesday evening last week Robin Alden and Iain Ogilvie were admitted as Churchwardens for Hull Minster. The service took place at Beverley Minster and was led by Stephen Cottrell, Archbishop of York. The welcome included the following words:

“As we admit new Churchwardens to office, we assure them of our prayerful support, loyalty and encouragement. Our prayer is that God will richly bless you and the Church as you serve as Churchwardens”.

We give thanks for the hard work shown by our wardens over the past years. I know of the many hours they spend, often behind the scenes, making sure they fulfil the office to which they are called.

The Archbishop spoke on Psalm 127: ‘Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain.’ He finished by praying for the wardens with the words:

‘May the Lord give you grace for your office and bless your going out and your coming in from this time forward and for evermore.’

MARGARET NICHOLSON

Margaret Nicholson has been part of Holy Trinity/Hull Minster for over 60 years and joined the choir at the time when females were first introduced to it.

Margaret’s funeral service will be held in the Minster on Tuesday 11th July at 2 p.m. We will be providing an afternoon tea after the service. If you would like to contribute by providing homemade cakes or scones please let Rev. Irene or Rev. Louise know.  Thank you

GIRLS BRIGADE

We are so blessed to have a fabulous team and amazing girls and supportive families. Everyone did great at the Victoria Dock Summer fair and raised awareness of Girls Brigade. We provided free crafts and games for the event which was very popular throughout the day. The girls helped to lead in crafts, Hook a duck and hand out leaflets. I couldn't be prouder of them. Through this we were spreading the good news of Christ, raising hope and developing life skills. A massive thank you to Jill, Gill, Robin, Carl, Jo, Imogen, Holly, Charlie, Chris, Graham, Shirley and Alasdair. We couldn't have done it without your support!

SATURDAY MUSIC IN THE MINSTER

Last Saturday saw a record audience of 70 people attend a wonderful concert by the Classical Guitar Ensemble of the East Riding of Yorkshire. This is the second time the ensemble have played at the Minster and were so popular that the audience were demanding an encore! You’ll be pleased to hear we’ve booked them to return next year.

PLEASE NOTE: there are many road closures in and around at the present time.  In particular, the A63 is closed from Friday evening until Monday morning between the Hull Royal turn-off and the Minster. Please allow extra time for your journeys

JUDAH’S BAPTISM

On Sunday, Judah, son of  Revs. Hannah and Rob Suekarran, brother to Reuben, was baptised during the 11 o’clock service.  His grandmother created this wonderful tree, each leaf of which holds a message.  The verse of scripture underneath beautifully sums it up:

The luscious sound of fifty wind, brass, and percussion players could be heard resounding throughout the Minster last Saturday. The afternoon concert was a collaboration between the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra and the Eclectic Wind Orchestra. Their programme included contemporary concert band music such as the Paris Sketches by Martin Ellerby and O magnum mysterium by Morten Lauridsen.    Ben Newton

The State force, our CHIEF Minister is against us. The center Govt watches us from afar. BJP govt is against Christianity. 

There are refugees everywhere. We are lebelled as illegal immigrants/ terrorists. We have to defennd land, our villages and towns by our own.

We need world attention.

After more than 16 years and 1,000 races, fundraiser John Burkhill has reached his £1m target for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of his wife. Known as The Man With The Pram and instantly recognisable for his bright green wig, the 84-year-old from Sheffield began fundraising in 2007.

He was happy to have his photograph taken with Irene on Sunday morning when the roads were closed for the Hull half marathon and 10K.

PLEA FROM WELCOME HOUSE

We have been asked by Olga, our Ukrainian friend, whether we are able to collect small toys for use at Welcome House. Welcome House provides daytime facilities for Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Hull and the East Riding. Often these are families with small children and at the moment they do not have toys for the children to play with.

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH

It was great fun this week as children had to make decisions about what LOVE IS and what LOVE IS NOT.  They had a pack of ‘hearts’ saying such things as ‘kind’, ‘patient’, ‘grumpy,’ ‘jealous’, and they had to decide on which large heart on the board to paste these.  They were supposed to walk quickly but as you can see, that turned out to be more like running.  It was great and everyone enjoyed it, whilst learning important lessons

GIRLS BRIGADE

It was good to have the Girls’ Brigade taking part in the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service, as they led our prayers and encouraged us in singing.  There were badges given out and one new recruit welcomed into the group.

Education Matters!

It was such a pleasure to be joined by Corey, Ellis, Jacob and Josh,this week when they visited the Jewish Living Experience Exhibition.  They first came to Hull Minster for a primary school education visit when they were pupil at Bude Park Primary School.

Now apprentices at Ron Dearing UTC, they remembered the communion activity they did with Jane and Irene and were able to relate this to what they saw in the exhibition.  We often wonder what impact education has on the youngsters we meet and have to wait a long time to find out.   They feel welcome and comfortable at Hull Minster and often meet up with their friends during their long Thursday lunch break. I think we can call this success! Jane Owen

REV. IRENE writes

Anyone who was around Hull City Centre last Saturday would have seen lots of people dressed in yellow and handing out yellow knitted teddy bears.  The project was rolled out on Saturday 24th  June 2017 and was intended to help people from Hull to celebrate the love of their city and its fascinating history by wearing or creating something yellow. This colour was chosen  because it resonates optimism, amongst other things, but also because it is the colour of the three coronets featured in Hull’s original coat of arms.  Now, as followers of Jesus, we need to find ways of sharing the good news of the gospel by which we can experience the forgiveness of sins which also takes away our feelings of guilt. 

Let us take a leaf out of their book and think about how we can demonstrate the happiness we find in Jesus.

JON IS SAFELY BACK WITH US:

“This is a quick diary of my visit:

Thursday 8th June the plane took off from RAF Brize Norton at 0120 after an 8 hour flight we landed in the very hot Ascension Islands at 09:20.  After a quick refuel we then continued on our final leg at 11:10 and landed in a very cold Falkland Islands at 16:30 local time, which is 4 four hours behind UK time.

We had a one-hour car journey to the lodge in which we were staying in the City of Port Stanley.

Friday 9th June, we walked into the City Centre to visit a few shops and the museum, due to incoming bad weather we made it back to the lodge just in time to see the snowfall.

For the next two days, we were stuck in the lodge due to a snow blizzard, but I was determined to make it to the morning communion at Christ Church Cathedral, which is the most southern cathedral in the world and part of, geographically, the largest parish in the world.

We had a quite relaxing time the following two weeks, around the lodge and at Port Stanley and a visit to Yorke Bay to see the Gentoo penguins.  We were unlucky not to see a pod of Southern Right Whales pass by two hours earlier and we were told that two days later a pod of Orca Whales passed by.

On Monday 19th June we were honoured to be invited to the Governor’s Residence for tea and scones and a tour of the House.

Our flight home was delayed by 24 hours but eventually, we left the Falklands at 09:30 on Wednesday 21st June with a mere 20-hour flight ahead of us.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable and at times moving pilgrimage. and I thank you all for keeping me in your prayers.”  Jon Major

MARGARET NICHOLSON

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear friend Margaret.

Margaret has been part of Holy Trinity/Hull Minster for over 60 years and joined the choir at the time when females were first introduced to it.

Margaret’s funeral service will be held in the Minster at 2 p.m. Tuesday 11th July.   Please pray for her sister Anne, and family.

JUDAH’S BAPTISM

On Sunday, Judah, son of  Revs. Hannah and Rob Suekarran, brother to Reuben, was baptised during the 11 o’clock service.  His grandmother created this wonderful tree, each leaf of which holds a message.  The verse of scripture underneath beautifully sums it up:

“Before I formed you in the womb  I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.”   Jeremiah 1:5

Following on from the article in the last two editions of Lifeline, we would ask that you continue to pray for Pastor Kamsat and his family.  The suffering the people of that region are enduring is beyond anything we can imagine, so we need to support them with our prayers.  Let us commit to praying for them daily – it is the least we can do and the most we can do.

SATURDAY MUSIC IN THE MINSTER

The luscious sound of fifty wind, brass, and percussion players could be heard resounding throughout the Minster last Saturday. The afternoon concert was a collaboration between the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra and the Eclectic Wind Orchestra. Their programme included contemporary concert band music such as the Paris Sketches by Martin Ellerby and O magnum mysterium by Morten Lauridsen.    Ben Newton

Featuring music ranging from the Spanish and classical repertoire to arrangements of popular hits, The Classical Guitar Ensemble of the East Riding of Yorkshire promises to lightly serenade its audience in a way that only the classical guitar can.

The programme is wide-ranging and includes: Celtic Ships – Leslie Searle, Jazz Band Blues – John Compton, and Summertime – George Gershwin, among many others.

I have recently received the attached email message from Kamsat with very disturbing news regarding the freedom of Christian worship out in Manipur; an area known as ‘land of gems’, in NE India. After you have read the message, please remember their communities in your prayers and pass on our concerns wherever possible.

They raped our women, killed even children and the elderly. 50.000 people are displaced everywhere in the country. Please search (if you have time) Manipur violence on the net. 

I want you share this story in Church. Right now I am save as I am in neighboring state. Internet has been suspended for 26 day now.

The State force, our CHIEF Minister is against us. The center Govt watches us from afar. BJP govt is against Christianity. 

There are refugees everywhere. We are lebelled as illegal immigrants/ terrorists. We have to defennd land, our villages and towns by our own.

We need world attention.

After more than 16 years and 1,000 races, fundraiser John Burkhill has reached his £1m target for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of his wife. Known as The Man With The Pram and instantly recognisable for his bright green wig, the 84-year-old from Sheffield began fundraising in 2007.

He was happy to have his photograph taken with Irene on Sunday morning when the roads were closed for the Hull half marathon and 10K.

PLEA FROM WELCOME HOUSE

We have been asked by Olga, our Ukrainian friend, whether we are able to collect small toys for use at Welcome House. Welcome House provides daytime facilities for Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Hull and the East Riding. Often these are families with small children and at the moment they do not have toys for the children to play with.

If you can help, please bring things into the Minster, and leave for Irene. Thank you!

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH

It was great fun this week as children had to make decisions about what LOVE IS and what LOVE IS NOT.  They had a pack of ‘hearts’ saying such things as ‘kind’, ‘patient’, ‘grumpy,’ ‘jealous’, and they had to decide on which large heart on the board to paste these.  They were supposed to walk quickly but as you can see, that turned out to be more like running.  It was great and everyone enjoyed it, whilst learning important lessons

Welcome Café is held every Thursday morning 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please do drop in and support whenever you can.  We hope to grow this facility and invite many different groups along. There will be newspapers, games, table talk and much more with coffee and cake supplied. It is extremely important that our church family pop along from time to time.  time as we need people to welcome and chat to those that may be visiting for the first time.

From 12:30 soup will be served and drinks throughout the afternoon until 3 p.m.

This week Simon-Mary Vincent will perform, introducing the Occasional Trio.

The Stamford Bridge Singers sang at a special Evensong on Saturday 27th . A pleasure to listen to.

Hull Minster will now be collecting food for the Hull for Heroes foodbank. They need ambient long-lasting food like tins, pasta, sauces etc. also toiletries. The donation point will be behind the Welcome desk, so clear out your cupboards!

GIRLS BRIGADE

It was good to have the Girls’ Brigade taking part in the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service, as they led our prayers and encouraged us in singing.  There were badges given out and one new recruit welcomed into the group.

Education Matters!

It was such a pleasure to be joined by Corey, Ellis, Jacob and Josh,this week when they visited the Jewish Living Experience Exhibition.  They first came to Hull Minster for a primary school education visit when they were pupil at Bude Park Primary School.

Now apprentices at Ron Dearing UTC, they remembered the communion activity they did with Jane and Irene and were able to relate this to what they saw in the exhibition.  We often wonder what impact education has on the youngsters we meet and have to wait a long time to find out.   They feel welcome and comfortable at Hull Minster and often meet up with their friends during their long Thursday lunch break. I think we can call this success! Jane Owen
