REV. IRENE writes:

On Tuesday evening last week Robin Alden and Iain Ogilvie were admitted as Churchwardens for Hull Minster. The service took place at Beverley Minster and was led by Stephen Cottrell, Archbishop of York. The welcome included the following words:

“As we admit new Churchwardens to office, we assure them of our prayerful support, loyalty and encouragement. Our prayer is that God will richly bless you and the Church as you serve as Churchwardens”.

We give thanks for the hard work shown by our wardens over the past years. I know of the many hours they spend, often behind the scenes, making sure they fulfil the office to which they are called.

The Archbishop spoke on Psalm 127: ‘Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain.’ He finished by praying for the wardens with the words:

‘May the Lord give you grace for your office and bless your going out and your coming in from this time forward and for evermore.’

MARGARET NICHOLSON

Margaret Nicholson has been part of Holy Trinity/Hull Minster for over 60 years and joined the choir at the time when females were first introduced to it.

Margaret’s funeral service will be held in the Minster on Tuesday 11th July at 2 p.m. We will be providing an afternoon tea after the service. If you would like to contribute by providing homemade cakes or scones please let Rev. Irene or Rev. Louise know. Thank you

Welcome Café is held every Thursday morning 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please do quickly visit and support whenever you can. We hope to grow this facility and invite many different groups along. There will be newspapers, games, table talk and much more with coffee and cake supplied. It is extremely important that our church family pop along on occasion, as we need people to welcome and chat to those that may be visiting for the first time.

From 12:30 soup will be served and drinks throughout the afternoon until 3 p.m.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

In addition to ReNew being present in the church as part of the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space that is open to absolutely everyone each Thursday, on the 6th July, a representative of the Hull City Council Wilson Centre information team will also be there.

This person will be able to take concerns or enquiries you may have about any of the City Council departments, from footpaths, planning applications, to Council Tax.

Initially, this will be available from 11:00 until 12:30.

Naturally, we need to see what response there will be to this new service. This, like the situation with ReNew, will be monitored in order to gauge the interest for such information. If necessary, we will extend the time the two organisations are in church.

I must emphasise that this is available in the same way the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space are: to absolutely everyone. That means you, your friends, family members, and even those who walk into the church for the very first time.

If you have any questions about either of these two organisations, or how you could be part of the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space team, please don’t hesitate to ask either Rev Irene or Tim.

GIRLS BRIGADE

We are so blessed to have a fabulous team and amazing girls and supportive families. Everyone did great at the Victoria Dock Summer fair and raised awareness of Girls Brigade. We provided free crafts and games for the event which was very popular throughout the day. The girls helped to lead in crafts, Hook a duck and hand out leaflets. I couldn't be prouder of them. Through this we were spreading the good news of Christ, raising hope and developing life skills. A massive thank you to Jill, Gill, Robin, Carl, Jo, Imogen, Holly, Charlie, Chris, Graham, Shirley and Alasdair. We couldn't have done it without your support!

SATURDAY MUSIC IN THE MINSTER

Last Saturday saw a record audience of 70 people attend a wonderful concert by the Classical Guitar Ensemble of the East Riding of Yorkshire. This is the second time the ensemble have played at the Minster and were so popular that the audience were demanding an encore! You’ll be pleased to hear we’ve booked them to return next year.

PLEASE NOTE: there are many road closures in and around at the present time. In particular, the A63 is closed from Friday evening until Monday morning between the Hull Royal turn-off and the Minster. Please allow extra time for your journeys

JUDAH’S BAPTISM

On Sunday, Judah, son of Revs. Hannah and Rob Suekarran, brother to Reuben, was baptised during the 11 o’clock service. His grandmother created this wonderful tree, each leaf of which holds a message. The verse of scripture underneath beautifully sums it up:

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” Jeremiah 1:5

The luscious sound of fifty wind, brass, and percussion players could be heard resounding throughout the Minster last Saturday. The afternoon concert was a collaboration between the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra and the Eclectic Wind Orchestra. Their programme included contemporary concert band music such as the Paris Sketches by Martin Ellerby and O magnum mysterium by Morten Lauridsen. Ben Newton

Featuring music ranging from the Spanish and classical repertoire to arrangements of popular hits, The Classical Guitar Ensemble of the East Riding of Yorkshire promises to lightly serenade its audience in a way that only the classical guitar can.

The programme is wide-ranging and includes: Celtic Ships – Leslie Searle, Jazz Band Blues – John Compton, and Summertime – George Gershwin, among many others.

I have recently received the attached email message from Kamsat with very disturbing news regarding the freedom of Christian worship out in Manipur; an area known as ‘land of gems’, in NE India. After you have read the message, please remember their communities in your prayers and pass on our concerns wherever possible.

I want you share this story in Church. Right now I am save as I am in neighboring state. Internet has been suspended for 26 day now.

The State force, our CHIEF Minister is against us. The center Govt watches us from afar. BJP govt is against Christianity.

There are refugees everywhere. We are lebelled as illegal immigrants/ terrorists. We have to defennd land, our villages and towns by our own.

We need world attention.

After more than 16 years and 1,000 races, fundraiser John Burkhill has reached his £1m target for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of his wife. Known as The Man With The Pram and instantly recognisable for his bright green wig, the 84-year-old from Sheffield began fundraising in 2007.

He was happy to have his photograph taken with Irene on Sunday morning when the roads were closed for the Hull half marathon and 10K.

PLEA FROM WELCOME HOUSE

We have been asked by Olga, our Ukrainian friend, whether we are able to collect small toys for use at Welcome House. Welcome House provides daytime facilities for Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Hull and the East Riding. Often these are families with small children and at the moment they do not have toys for the children to play with.

If you can help, please bring things into the Minster, and leave for Irene. Thank you!

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH

It was great fun this week as children had to make decisions about what LOVE IS and what LOVE IS NOT. They had a pack of ‘hearts’ saying such things as ‘kind’, ‘patient’, ‘grumpy,’ ‘jealous’, and they had to decide on which large heart on the board to paste these. They were supposed to walk quickly but as you can see, that turned out to be more like running. It was great and everyone enjoyed it, whilst learning important lessons

GIRLS BRIGADE

It was good to have the Girls’ Brigade taking part in the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service, as they led our prayers and encouraged us in singing. There were badges given out and one new recruit welcomed into the group.

Education Matters!

It was such a pleasure to be joined by Corey, Ellis, Jacob and Josh,this week when they visited the Jewish Living Experience Exhibition. They first came to Hull Minster for a primary school education visit when they were pupil at Bude Park Primary School.

Now apprentices at Ron Dearing UTC, they remembered the communion activity they did with Jane and Irene and were able to relate this to what they saw in the exhibition. We often wonder what impact education has on the youngsters we meet and have to wait a long time to find out. They feel welcome and comfortable at Hull Minster and often meet up with their friends during their long Thursday lunch break. I think we can call this success! Jane Owen
