Education Workshops
Bring along a group of young people to learn about the rich heritage at Hull Minster. Choose from our supervised workshops. You can come for part or all of the day.
Tuesday visitors will have free run of the building!
Evening visits for clubs also available.
Workshops are funded by The Heritage Fund. Schools in Hull and East Riding can apply for travel bursaries from the Ann Watson Trust at the link below
My Strength and Shield
Learners use the memorial resources and stained glass to explore heraldry and what it tells them about identity and belonging asking “What makes me strong?”
They learn about family connections and how people in the past created their own ‘logo’.
Using stamps and shapes, learners design their own shield and explain their style choices to one another which they can take home at the end of the visit.
Language and Script
This workshops explores language of memorial and celebration of life.
Learners collect words from monuments - either by rubbing or photography, exploring different themes – eg words of love/ praise/ memory/ occupations/ locations etc.
They explore the writing and re-create typescript using resources in the monuments and coffin plates. They find out how handwritten scripts have evolved by referring to manuscripts of wills and church records.
Stained glass
Learners explore the stained glass and think about how it was designed and made, what it is for, and the science behind light.
They explore the meaning of the glass and how it related to various periods in history and the stories it tells.
Each student designs their own stained glass, using medieval designs to create images and shade in their story pictures.
Archaeology - handling the graveyard collection
We have a collection of archaeological finds for handling and discussion too.
Students can make replicas of objects, explore why some things decay and others don’t, and think about what objects tell us about the way people lived in the 1800’s.
Education visits can also include general or themes tours and trails and a visit to the tower for students aged 10 or over. If you would like a tour or trail please add this to the enquiry form.
