ABOUT YOUR TUTOR

Matthias co-runs the building conservation workshop, Matthias Garn + Partner. He is a Master Stonemason and Stone Carver from Dresden who has lived and worked in the UK for over 20 years, first with Wells Cathedral and then with Dick Reid. He started his own business in 2004, a workshop which specialises in historic building conservation, complex masonry, carving and letter-cutting. He is also a tutor in the Masonry Department at York College.

Wolds Workshop is pleased to offer a 2- day practical course which aims to introduce you to the process of letter cutting in stone, taught by professional mason, carver and letter-cutter, Matthias Garn.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: This class will guide students through the practical techniques letter-cutting in stone. As the student is taught the fundamentals of letter design, they will spend time drawing and then tracing their lettering onto the stone, ready for carving. On the second day, students will cut the letters with the option to paint them when time allows. The course is suitable for all ability levels.

Camera for documenting your progress

FOOD + DRINK:
Tea and coffee will be provided, but
please bring your own lunch.

in the café at the Minster.

ABOUT YOUR TUTOR

Kibby co-runs the building conservation workshop, Matthias Garn + Partner. She gained a Diploma in Architectural Woodcarving from the City + Guilds of London Art School, specialising in the limewood carving of Grinling Gibbons under Hannah Hartwell, after which she was invited to work for Dick Reid in York. She later worked for David Esterly, assisting with the creation of complex architectural limewood compositions. She joined Matthias Garn in 2008.

Wolds Workshop is pleased to offer a 2- day practical course which aims to introduce you to the process of ornamental clay modelling, taught by professional carver, Kibby Schaefer.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: This class will guide students through the practical techniques of modelling ornamental detail in clay, using Hull Minster and its decorative features as inspiration. The first day will involve drawing their chosen detail and translating this into a 3-dimensional clay model. On the second day, students will make a plaster cast of their model, which can be taken home.
The course is suitable for all ability levels.

Helen Bower BA, MA, SPAB Fellow
As an experienced craftswoman Helen has been working in the field of stained-glass for the last twenty five years, including working on glass from medieval to modern at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and York Minster, as well as in commercial workshops in Worcestershire, Lancashire, and Yorkshire. She has a degree in 3-Dimensional Glass Design, a Masters Degree in Stained Glass Conservation and Heritage Management, and is also a Fellow for the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings.

Wolds Workshop is pleased to offer a 2- day practical taster course, which aims to introduce you to the traditional craft of stained-glass making, taught by professional artist and conservator, Helen Bower.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: This class will guide students through the practical techniques of glass cutting, lead shaping, soldering and cementing. You will also gain an insight into historic glass making techniques and development, from medieval to modern day. You can choose to work from your own design, or use one of Helen’s pre-prepared designs for your glass panel. At the end of the course, you will be able to take home your own stained-glass panel approximately 220mm X 220mm.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: This class will guide students through the techniques of glass painting, using the surrounding Minster building and its contents as inspiration. On the second day, students will be shown how to incorporate their kiln-fired pieces into a simple leaded framework, including soldering and cementing. At the end of the course, you will be able to take home your own stained and painted glass panel approximately 220mm X 220mm

TIME: 9am - 5pm
FEE: £240 plus VAT

This course is not advisable for anyone who may be pregnant, due to the use of Lead-base materials.
