JON’S PILGRIMAGE TO THE FALKLANDS CONTINUES

WELCOME CAFÉ (from strangers to friends) & LISTENING SPACE

Welcome Café is held every Thursday morning 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please do drop in and support whenever you can. We hope to grow this facility and invite many different groups along. There will be newspapers, games, table talk and much more with coffee and cake supplied. It is extremely important that our church family pop along on occasion, as we need people to welcome and chat to those that may be visiting for the first time.

From 12:30 soup will be served and drinks throughout the afternoon until 3 p.m.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

In addition to ReNew being present in the church as part of the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space that is open to absolutely everyone each Thursday, on the 6th July, a representative of the Hull City Council Wilson Centre information team will also be there.

This person will be able to take concerns or enquiries you may have about any of the City Council departments, from footpaths, planning applications, to Council Tax.

Initially, this will be available from 11:00 until 12:30.

Naturally, we need to see what response there will be to this new service. This, like the situation with ReNew, will be monitored in order to gauge the interest for such information. If necessary, we will extend the time the two organisations are in church.

I must emphasise that this is available in the same way the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space are: to absolutely everyone. That means you, your friends, family members, and even those who walk into the church for the very first time.

If you have any questions about either of these two organisations, or how you could be part of the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space team, please don’t hesitate to ask either Rev Irene or Tim.

GIRLS BRIGADE

Wow! What a night we had on Tuesday, it was nice to think about others and the way the church community reaches out to different groups of people. The previous week we explored what the Grief Cafe and Welcome Cafe do and thought it would be nice as part of our badgework of Speaking out and Being the Change to bake for the Welcome Cafe (Every Thursday from 10 a.m.) and plant our decorated plant pots with Pansies for the grief cafe,(every second Wednesday of the month.) It was nice for the girls to think about how, although we come to church and take part in Girls Brigade in church, there's lot more that goes on which needs our support. With special thanks to the GB Team, Jamie who helped us in the kitchen, and Zoe for providing excellent facilities. We had a lovely time!

HELP NEEDED!!

I am looking for three volunteers to help with a craft and games stall at Victoria Dock Village fair on Saturday 1st August. 1st Hull Girls Brigade will be promoting ourselves at the fair and we need a few more hands to ensure a successful interactive day. GRIEF AWARENESS CAFÉ

I regularly attend the grief café, but this week was slightly different as it was the anniversary of my mother’s passing and therefore a little difficult. However, I had a lovely surprise as the Girls Brigade had not only made us some delicious chocolate brownies, but they had also decorated some plant pots with wonderful caring messages on them. Each plant had a pansy in it which they had bought and planted. I stood and read all the messages and chose one I found I really liked. This kind gesture was exactly what I needed this morning, and it lifted my spirits no end. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Girls Brigade on behalf of the Grief Café for their thoughtfulness and kindness.

BREAKFAST CHURCH

The theme this morning was the need for workers to bring in the harvest (see Anne’s commissioning). As you can tell, the children really got into this message.

GREAT TIME AT JUNIOR CHURCH

This week we looked at the Lord’s Prayer and the children made a bracelet with beads – each of these representing someone the children wanted to pray for, and in different colours – they then wrote those names on a reminder sheet.

PETER LORD’S AFTERNOON TEA

On Wednesday 12th July, Peter Lord will be leading his final Strawberry Tea at 2 p.m. All good things come to an end – Peter feels after ten years this should be the last gathering.

I’m sure Peter will continue, in other ways, to enlighten us with anecdotes from the archives for many years to come. Please put this date in your diary – not to be missed!

I have recently received the attached email message from Kamsat with very disturbing news regarding the freedom of Christian worship out in Manipur; an area known as ‘land of gems’, in NE India. After you have read the message, please remember their communities in your prayers and pass on our concerns wherever possible.

After more than 16 years and 1,000 races, fundraiser John Burkhill has reached his £1m target for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of his wife. Known as The Man With The Pram and instantly recognisable for his bright green wig, the 84-year-old from Sheffield began fundraising in 2007.

He was happy to have his photograph taken with Irene on Sunday morning when the roads were closed for the Hull half marathon and 10K.

PLEA FROM WELCOME HOUSE

We have been asked by Olga, our Ukrainian friend, whether we are able to collect small toys for use at Welcome House. Welcome House provides daytime facilities for Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Hull and the East Riding. Often these are families with small children and at the moment they do not have toys for the children to play with.

If you can help, please bring things into the Minster, and leave for Irene. Thank you!

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH

It was great fun this week as children had to make decisions about what LOVE IS and what LOVE IS NOT. They had a pack of ‘hearts’ saying such things as ‘kind’, ‘patient’, ‘grumpy,’ ‘jealous’, and they had to decide on which large heart on the board to paste these. They were supposed to walk quickly but as you can see, that turned out to be more like running. It was great and everyone enjoyed it, whilst learning important lessons

Hull Minster will now be collecting food for the Hull for Heroes foodbank. They need ambient long-lasting food like tins, pasta, sauces etc. also toiletries. The donation point will be behind the Welcome desk, so clear out your cupboards!

Ecclesiastical is Hull Minster's insurer. This year they are running a donation scheme where they will donate £130 to the Minster for every new household insurance policy taken out. GIRLS BRIGADE

It was good to have the Girls’ Brigade taking part in the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service, as they led our prayers and encouraged us in singing. There were badges given out and one new recruit welcomed into the group.

Education Matters!

It was such a pleasure to be joined by Corey, Ellis, Jacob and Josh,this week when they visited the Jewish Living Experience Exhibition. They first came to Hull Minster for a primary school education visit when they were pupil at Bude Park Primary School.

Now apprentices at Ron Dearing UTC, they remembered the communion activity they did with Jane and Irene and were able to relate this to what they saw in the exhibition. We often wonder what impact education has on the youngsters we meet and have to wait a long time to find out. They feel welcome and comfortable at Hull Minster and often meet up with their friends during their long Thursday lunch break. I think we can call this success! Jane Owen

We spoke about St. Barnabas on Sunday last as we celebrated his feast day. Barnabas was the great encourager who helped Paul become the great apostle that he is. We all need someone to encourage us in our lives.

I have been interested in the work that the Girls’ Brigade are doing at the moment and next week I will have some pictures. They have decorated plant pots especially for all those who come along to our Grief Café. I have to say a big ‘thank you’ to Lauren, Gill and Jill who are the leaders of this group. They are great encouragers to these young people and work so hard to show them the right way to live their lives.

How thoughtful, I will be handing out the gifts this Wednesday at the Grief Café and I know that they will be well received by the adults especially because they know that young people have taken the time to do this to help them as they come to terms with loss.

Have you someone who is your encourager? Or maybe you are that encourager to others.

Be strong and courageous. …. for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

SATURDAY RECITALS

Although this is not until the 17th June, Ben Newton would like people to have notice as early as possible.

Tyler Wood is eighteen and has been studying the cello for the last ten years. He is now in the midst of preparing for life at the conservatoire, soon to be taking up a place at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire where he has earned a full scholarship. Tyler has enjoyed being a part of the Hull Music Service throughout his education, working his way up through its ensembles. He now plays as part of the Albemarle Chamber Ensemble, the Hull Youth Orchestra, and is the principal cellist of the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra.

The programme includes some exquisite music including Fauré’s Après un rêve and Rachmaninoff’s Op. 34 Vocalise. Should be a concert that absolutely everyone can enjoy.

On Wednesday this week our wonderful verger Jon sets off on pilgrimage to the Falkland Islands. I have had the privilege of spending time with Jon recently and have heard a great deal about his time in the Royal Navy during the Falklands War. Jon’s ship, the Ardent was attacked on 21ST May 1982 and destroyed, losing twenty-two crew members. The main purpose of this pilgrimage is to visit the memorials to the 255 servicemen and three Islanders who perished in the Falklands war and also take part in the Liberation Day Parade on the 14th June. Please pray for Jon as he visits the Falklands with seven other veterans for safety and for healing of difficult memories.

GIRLS BRIGADE

The Northern Lights Girls' Brigade Band are playing in Pearson Park next Sunday (11th June) 2pm-3pm. It would be great to see people there to share in a variety music from hymns, traditional songs, Disney, and film music.

Our badgework this term is looking at Speaking out and Being the Change. We are exploring the story of Naaman and his servant girl who spoke out to help Naaman, so that he was cured of Leprosy. Our first craft was making linking to speaking out was making these phone speakers.

ORDINATION OF PRIESTS

We were delighted to host the ordination to the priesthood for three local candidates yesterday. The Minster was full of well-wishers for Jonny, Jenny and Shelley as Bishop Eleanor and Archdeacon Andy led the service. We pray they will be filled with the Holy Spirit in all they do and be loyal servants of Christ for the whole of their lives.

IMPORTANT REMINDER

This Sunday much of the Old Town and out to the wider city, will have road closures due to the races that are taking place. They are too many closures to list here so would suggest you look at the website.

COMPASSION UK CHARITY

On Sunday on 21st May, Clare Nelson from the charity Compassion UK came to join us for both our 9.30am Breakfast Church and 11am Holy Communion Services, to preach God’s word to us tell us about the work of Compassion UK. Clare shared stories of how the lives of children in other parts of the world, who lack the basic things that we take for granted such as clothes, food, medical check-ups, and educational support, are changed by child sponsorship through Compassion UK, who work with local partners. At the end of each service, there was an opportunity for any who felt led to support this work to sponsor a child. There are twelve children who live in Uganda who can be sponsored through Hull Minster. So far, seven of these children have been sponsored by congregation members. There are five children who remain to be sponsored from this church if we so wish. Therefore, if anyone would like to sponsor one of these remaining children, please email rob (rob.suekarran@hullminster.org) for more details. The deadline for sponsoring these children is Sunday 11th June, after which the particular link of these children in Uganda with Hull Minster will close, and sponsors from further afield sought.

We hear many interesting stories during our time at the Minster, this is one I wanted to share with you.

LOST AND FOUND

One of the welcomers came to me with a cash donation last Saturday morning and told me she had been given it by a very grateful lady who had visited the church earlier in the week. The lady had been very upset when she visited due to her beloved cat having gone missing! She said that whilst she was in the washrooms, she felt she needed to pray for a safe return for her pet and she said to God if he returns, I will come straight back to the Minster to give a gift. The story had a happy ending ‘puss’ returned safely and we gave thanks for a generous donation to help with the work that goes on each day of the week.

Whilst it is not normal practice to bargain with God In 1 Samuel 1, we read the story of Hannah who was desperate for a child. She pleaded with God to give her a son, promising that she would return him to the Temple to serve God. God answered her prayer and Samuel became the greatest prophet Israel ever had.

In Genesis 18 Abraham tries to bargain with God to stop him from destroying Sodom and Gomorrah (for their extreme wickedness). He starts off by saying if he can find fifty people who were not evil, would God save the city. God agrees and so Abraham starts bringing the numbers down: 45, then 40, and so on until he reaches ten. They settle on that figure. The reason Abraham was bargaining with God was that his brother-in-law Lot and his family were living there. Eventually, the city was destroyed because ten good men could not be found.

Many of us may have had members of our family who were very ill and have tried to make bargains with God as to what we would do if only they were healed. We must remember that God’s ways are not our ways and he only, knows the end from the beginning. That means we must trust him in all things because he loves us and has our best interests at heart.

“Enter his (God’s) gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name.” Psalm 100:3.

One of my favourite Psalms, The Jubilate as it is often called, is Psalm 100. It talks about coming into God’s Temple, or for us, into His presence, with thanksgiving. Many times throughout the Bible we are told to bring God our thanks, or to thank God continually, or to bring Him a sacrifice of thanksgiving. Likewise, we are often told in the Old Testament that the people of God were not to grumble, God was upset by their grumbling and lack of trust in Him.

I don’t know about you, but I find it all too easy sometimes to grumble. Often people around us are grumbling and it becomes too easy for us to just join in. But I have also noticed how spending time thanking God for all the good things He has given me, and done for me, can be very powerful. It can be a way of lifting me up into an awareness of God at work in my life, and His love and care for me. It may take a while to start to notice those good things, especially if we are struggling with what is going on in our life at that moment. However, training our hearts and minds to recognise the good things, and to thank the God who made us, made the world in which we live, and who loves and cares for us, that can lead us to a greater awareness of His presence with us.

It is a bit like when I decide to go and spend time in our garden- it is full at the moment of a very virulent spreading weed, and I can spend all my time focussing on the weed and my desire to get rid of it. Or I can go into the garden and notice the beautiful flowers, the poinsettias coming into flower, or the magnolia which I planted last year which is finally coming into flower. As I spend time noticing the beauty in the garden I often end up praising God for the wonderful things He has made, and for His goodness in giving us this garden.

Let us be people who notice and give thanks to God for His good gifts to us, including the gifts of one another, and ultimately for the gift of Jesus. As we celebrate Ascension Day on Thursday, we give thanks that as Jesus ascended to the Father, so now He reigns with Him, and sends the Holy Spirit as our Advocate, as our comforter, God’s presence with us at all times.

INTERNATIONAL CHOIR COMPETITION

We have had another wonderful and somewhat exhausting week. This week saw the Interkultur Choirs Competition take place in Hull, the first time that any such event has taken place. Choirs came from far and wide (12 nations were presented). These choirs were a mix of semi-professional adult choirs and exceptionally good youth choirs. Many of these choirs performed within the Minster on Friday evening and Saturday morning. More than 1000 people came to Hull to sing! The opening ceremony/performance took place in Hull City Hall on Thursday evening. The first choir to perform in this amazing event was...our Choral Strategy School Choirs!

Despite some schools being subjected to industrial action, 90 children (representing five of our schools) arrived at HM at 2:30 on Thursday and rehearsed for the rest of the day. They worked hard and sang beautifully. They were supported by our music team, including some of our Choral Scholars.

The performance at Hull City Hall started at 7:30 and was spectacular. The photographs say it all. The children filled the stage and filled the City Hall with song. They were a credit to our city, and (to my biased mind) gave our international audience the best possible welcome. Mark Keith

HERITAGE TALKS

The Lunchtime Heritage Talk Series resumes on the 12th May with a talk by one of our regular Wednesday volunteers, Mike Rymer. He'll be talking about one of Hull's unusual characters, David Dunster.

CORONATION CELEBRATIONS AT THE MINSTER

As part of the Coronation celebrations & The Big Help Out, Hull Minster will be hosting a street party on Monday 8th May from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm.
Their Majesties The King and The Queen Consort hope the Coronation Weekend will provide an opportunity to spend time and celebrate with friends, families and communities across the United Kingdom, the Realms, and the Commonwealth.

We hope this event will highlight the positive impact volunteering has on communities across the nation.

In tribute to His Majesty The King's public service, The Big Help Out will encourage people to try volunteering for themselves and join the work being undertaken to support their local areas. The aim of The Big Help Out is to use volunteering to bring communities together and create a lasting volunteering legacy from the Coronation Weekend.

There will be stalls & activities inside and outside the Minster, from face painting to stalls, tombola, raffle, and a children's entertainer plus a free picnic lunch for all!
There is no need to book, just turn up on the day and bring the family! We look forward to seeing you. Shirley Kay

If you have been attending the Minster for six months or more, you may want to consider going onto the Electoral Roll. This will enable to you vote at the ACP which will be on 21st May. Forms are at the back of the church, or see Val Fotherby. Being on the Electoral Roll also means you can be nominated for the PCC. Again, you will need to fill in the necessary form and have two people to sponsor you, again see Val. THIS MUST BE DONE BY THE END OF APRIL at which time, the roll will be closed. Thank you.

Jewish Living Experience Exhibition

We're really pleased to be hosting this exhibition from 16th May to 8th June. It’s a great opportunity to find out more about the Jewish Faith in the UK today. Everyone's invited from 2:30 pm to 4 pm Tuesday to Friday. Schools will be visiting during the daytime, so if you know of a teacher who might want to bring a school please let them know about it so they can book a slot. It’s FREE!

It's a very hands-on exhibition with clothing, artefacts, food and more, all hosted by volunteers from the Jewish community.

Our clergy team will also be around, with curates from the Deanery to help you understand the links between Christianity and the Jewish faith.

OUR MINSTER CHOIR

It was such a pleasure to formally admit two choristers to the choir this week and to also to have a brand new chorister start her journey of choir life.

Leila and Aria joined the choir two months ago and have been marvellous additions to our team: bright, keen to learn and utterly enthusiastic (and they sing beautifully too). They have both joined because they enjoyed their singing experiences in our partner schools (Adelaide and Maybury in this instance). It's also such a joy to see their very proud parents participate in the formal admission.

Madison joined us for her first rehearsal on Friday, having expressed an interest at school (St George's Primary) that very day! She went straight into the service singing on Sunday...quite an achievement because it's quite a daunting experience! We hope that she will thrive in this environment and develop her musicianship to wonderful levels.

I rather inelegantly modelled a surplice before it was presented to highlight the fact that we have run out of robes (although there are a few very ancient moth-eaten examples left in the cupboards). Four members of the congregation and choir have already offered to help make some new surplices, a wonderful example of our community spirit coming to the rescue. However, we are also in dire need of new cassocks as well. These are expensive items, and we will try to find some second-hand via other churches. Having said that, our red robes are not the norm! Most parish choirs wear blue, ours being crimson due to royal instruction in the 15th century (how's that for contemporary worship!). A few hundred pounds would certainly help us to move forward in this regard. One of the chorister’s parents have already offered to help find funds (a very welcome offer). If anyone feels able to contribute to the cause (in these very straitened times) please do contact me directly via mkeith@hullminster.org.

ANN WATTS

We are sad to report the death of Ann last Monday. Her funeral will be held at the Minster on Tuesday 25th April at 2 p.m. The family look forward to welcoming her church friends at the service. Lots of you will remember Ann’s mother Maisie who also attended the Minster for many years before her death a couple of years ago.

GIVING AT HULL MINSTER On behalf of the finance committee, we wanted to share with you something about Hull Minster finances and our giving. Firstly, to say THANK YOU – thank you to each person that gives, as without our giving we could not keep Hull Minster open and do all that we do in the Minster, local community, schools and the city. It costs around £1,000 a day to run the Minster, and every penny is raised locally through our giving, grants, the café, shop, and events.

We are now in the season of Lent, the period of time set aside in preparation for Easter when we are all invited to deepen our discipleship. We might observe this through fasting each week or from particular foods, and setting time aside for prayer. The purpose is to consider where we are in our walk with God and to intentionally go deeper in that walk.

Giving is part of our discipleship, Jesus talked about where your money is, there your heart will be.

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21

Lent also provides an invitation for us to consider our giving. One of the best things we can do is to give regularly, and we have a parish giving scheme that makes this very simple to do. If you consider that Hull Minster is your church, and you want to start giving regularly you can find out more on the website here https://hullminster.org/give or please come and speak to a member of the clergy or finance committee. Giving regularly helps with a steady flow of income and if you Gift-Aid we can claim back an extra 25%. If you already give regularly, thank you. Maybe during this period of Lent, you might prayerfully review your giving.

Last week we had an excellent study led by John Lawson, on the temptations of Jesus by the devil. It has been great to have different people each with their own style of study and presentation. You can find the outlines on the website under TEACHING.

KATE GOFORTH SHARES WITH US: AN EVENING IN THE MINSTER

It was lovely to see so many people come into the Minster on Saturday 18th March when the Freedom Festival 'Awakening' was taking place in Trinity Square.

Families were sitting in the chairs set out for breakfast church while their children played on the mats. Two young girls were knelt down praying at the back of the church in front of the board explaining what prayer is. Three girls were kneeling in the Broadley chapel at the altar rail. Families were on a move hunt and a lot of people took the time to look at the quilt dedicated to loved ones lost to suicide. There were so many candles lit at the altar they were stacked up double and at one point, Andy the volunteer had to use his coffee to put out the flames. Overall, some 5,700 people visited over the day.

On Sunday our 9:30 service focussed on Moses striking the rock and producing water! A miracle of the Old Testament. Our young people had fun completing several activities in relation to this passage of scripture, here are just a couple of examples.

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH!!

Junior Church at 11 a.m. re-enacted the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan.

This activity helped prepare the young people for the baptism of Hamish during our 11 a.m. service next week. This will be an exciting service as we bring together Mothering Sunday and Hamish’s baptism. (Hamish is the grandson of Sarah and nephew of Ben both from the choir)

International Women's Day celebrations - St Hilda’s Heirs

This last Saturday we celebrated International Women's Day with a themed day of worship and fun activities. Together with members of the Methodist community, and the general public, lots of people (men too!!!) learned about the contribution that women have made to faith, beginning with the Abbess of Whitby, St Hilda.

The life of ministry undertaken by so many women in Christianity today was celebrated with communion presided over by Bishop Eleanor. Reverend Louise looked after the prayer room in our newly refurbished Broadley Chapel. Girls Brigade groups came together to join in the fun. Lots of families also came along to enjoy the trails and treasure hunts, crafts and activities which were on offer. Diocesan Children's Advisor, Carolyn Edwards, coordinated the event with Hull Minster and was delighted with the atmosphere and enjoyment in the church. Jane Owen

We celebrate International Women’s Day this year with the help of the Diocese of York and the Methodist community in Hull. A fun packed day of activities which celebrate women in Ministry takes place on SATURDAY 11th MARCH. Called Hilda’s Heirs after the Abbess of Whitby, who one of the most important early Christian women, the day starts with a short service from the Bishop of Hull. It’s a drop in kind of day with activities such as stained glass, women’s trails and reflection and prayers stations, we’ll be making a wall of words commemorating women and contributing video reflections about women in ministry.

Celebrating women is everyone’s job! The day is open to all, not just women.

OUR LATEST EXHIBITION

DOING OUR PART FOR CLIMATE CHANGE

The Hull Minster team is keen to play a part in tackling climate change and biodiversity. The Minster has a long legacy of clergy, staff, and congregation cycling to worship and is working towards Cycle Friendly Employer status. As well as a secure home for bicycles the newly installed bike shelter has a wildlife roof.

Hull Minster has been working to improve and encourage sustainability for some years and was one of the first churches in the country to install solar panels.

Thank you to everyone at Hull Minster for all the gifts, cards and good wishes on the occasion of my 85th Birthday and “retirement” last weekend. Val, as ever, produced a lovely cake, despite feeling poorly, which was enjoyed by everyone after the service. The unexpected flowers were much appreciated by Julia.

STEPPING UP

GROWING NEW DISCIPLES IN PLACES WHERE

LIFE IS TOUGH.

A new Stepping Up learning Community will be starting in Hull after Easter.

Stepping Up provides an opportunity for lay people to come together once a week with people from other parishes in Hull to grow together as disciples of Jesus, and explore how to develop mission in their local community.

Over forty people have now completed Stepping Up in the urban and coastal communities of our York Diocese. They are involved in mission in their church and community in many different ways, and witnessing their churches grow as they share God’s love in the local community. “Hilda’s Heirs is a fun day of activities celebrating women and girls in mission and ministry. It is based at Hull Minster but includes an optional treasure hunt around the city.

Children and young people are invited to attend with leaders from their groups or their family. Activities include: brass rubbing, designing stained glass windows and a Minster Mystery Trail.

The day will start with a short worship service and end with a communion led by Bishop Eleanor of Hull and Leslie Newton (Chair of the Methodist District). During the day there will be a variety of activities and crafts on offer. A soup and sandwich lunch will be provided by the Hull Minster Cafe.

We are asking for contributions of £5 per head (£15 per family) towards food and resources, but please get in touch with carolyn.edwards@yorkdiocese.org or victoria@methodistyouth.org.uk if you need to discuss a bursary”.

I am so excited to be taking part in this event which has been organised by the York Diocese. It is great to run a group for girls and be able to celebrate how amazing women are and how we can work together to learn more about God, our faith and share with others the amazing things he did for us. It is great for our girls and families to see how faith works through different people at different stages in their journey.

Spoken by King Charles at the opening of his coronation service, these words were spoken by Jesus, two thousand years ago, the King of all kings.

As we celebrated in style the crowing of the King with all the pomp and ceremony involved, we remember that Saturday was only one day in the lifetime of King Charles, many of the remaining days of his life will be hard work and dedication to the people and to the causes that he feels so passionate about. At 75 most people are hanging up their boots, relaxing and taking it easy however, for King Charles his life will become even more busy as he attempts to follow the good example of his mother Queen Elizabeth II.

We pray that he will be given strength and good health to achieve all that God wants him to achieve and that he will be surrounded by love and support.

Despite some inclement weather, there were hundreds of people who queued to come and share in the fun. There were picnic boxes for everyone, face painting, stalls, a guy on stilts who could also juggle and make animals out of balloons, also a singer who entertained for about three hours nonstop! It was hugely enjoyable.

As we move into the month of May, once more we prepare to support Christian Aid Week 14th – 20th May. We are delighted that Jess and Michael (long-term volunteers and worshippers at the Minster) are willing to walk the Humber Bridge to raise funds for this great charity. Christian Aid works so hard to alleviate poverty and hardship around the world not least sending help and funds to Syria and Turkey.

Christian Aid ask that we get involved to help raise funds for Climate Campaign where they state:

Those who have done the least to cause the climate crisis are paying for its impact.

Meanwhile, the polluters who have caused the crisis generate massive profits.

It’s time to make polluters pay.

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH!!

This week the children used their best acting skills to demonstrate empty nets after the disciples had gone fishing and caught nothing. Jesus told them to cast their nets on the right side of the ship and they could hardly lift the nets because of the number of fishes!

ANN WATTS family and friends came together on Tuesday to say ‘goodbye’

Ann’s funeral took place in the Minster on the afternoon of Tuesday the 25th April. The lovely and fitting service, which was conducted by Reverend Irene, brought much comfort and peace for Michael her husband and the immediate family and was also the focus of very many compliments from the large congregation present.

After the service, it was good to see that so many of Ann’s extended family and friends were able to stay to meet up in the south aisle of the Minster to share memories of Ann with her family. David Carrington

Ann was thoughtful, generous, kind and a much-loved wife, mother, grandmother, and member of the congregation and will long be remembered by all who have been blessed to have met her.

Michael and the family would particularly like to extend their grateful thanks to Reverend Irene, Robin, Mark, Jon, the Trinity Room staff, and all other members and volunteers of the Minster staff for their contributions on this occasion. David Carrington

A FACE TO A NAME

You may have heard me mention Bryony over the past few weeks. She is the young lady who came to Hull for major brain surgery. Her mum, who lives down south, was hosted by Jayne Wilson from our choir enabling her to be in Hull whilst Bryony was in hospital.

Great news that Bryony went home to York last weekend, one drawback both Bryony’s mum and Jayne went down with covid. I was able to visit Bryony hence the picture.

Please pray for her continuous recovery over the coming weeks

Children and young people are invited to attend with leaders from their groups or their family. Activities include: brass rubbing, designing stained glass windows and a Minster Mystery Trail.

You may think the beer festival weekend was busy in the Minster, well this last weekend was no different. On Saturday the Record Fair was held in the Nave with hundreds of people visiting. Some were looking for a bargain record of their favourite group or person and others hoping to find a rarity to add to their collection.

At 12:30 the Minster hosted a free concert by Radcliffe-on-Trent male voice choir. The Minster was filled with music and song from both past and present. They were a joy to listen to, many people coming to the Minster especially to hear them.

On Sunday we had music from our worship band for the 9:30 service and our excellent choir led worship at 11 a.m. So, you could say, never a dull moment at Hull Minster.

Many verses of scripture encourage music in our worship, not least Psalm 150:

Praise the Lord.[a]Praise God in his sanctuary;     praise him in his mighty heavens.
2 Praise him for his acts of power;     praise him for his surpassing greatness.
3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,     praise him with the harp and lyre,
4 praise him with timbrel and dancing,     praise him with the strings and pipe,
5 praise him with the clash of cymbals,    praise him with resounding cymbals.

6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the LordI

“Hilda’s Heirs is a fun day of activities celebrating women and girls in mission and ministry. It is based at Hull Minster but includes an optional treasure hunt around the city.

Children and young people are invited to attend with leaders from their groups or their family. Activities include: brass rubbing, designing stained glass windows and a Minster Mystery Trail.

What a fabulous thrill it was to see the children – young and old! – participating in Messy Church, organised by Rev. Rob. Not only did everyone enjoy the activities but there was some great singing – with actions led by Rev. Rob and our wonderful donkey! Yes, it was Good Friday but everyone knew that Sunday morning, the day of Resurrection, was coming. So it was great to sing “He came from heaven to earth to show the way..”. I pray that everyone remembered the amazing sacrifice of Jesus on the cross that enables us to have new life in him, down here on earth but also in heaven.

MESSY CHURCH – GOOD FRIDAY MORNING

WELL, THEY DID SAY IT WAS MESSY CHURCH! Children having fun!

NEVER TOO OLD!! AND IF YOU CAN’T FIGHT, THEN WEAR A BIG HAT

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH!!

On Easter Day, Junior Church looked at the events of Holy Week and Easter and made a circle - something between a clock and a sundial. This helped to show the final days of the life of Jesus and the mixed emotions of those involved.

AND, OF COURSE, EVERYONE WAS GIVEN A CHOCOLATE EGG TO ENJOY

EASTER MORNING 9:30 SERVICE

A reminder of the new life which Jesus provided for us by his death on the cross.

A BIRTH AND A BEER FESTIVAL!

Hull Minster Beer Festival - this event was a huge success and a much-needed fundraiser for the church. Thank you to all who came along to support, with an even bigger thank you to all the volunteers who helped with all the various roles - without whom it couldn't have happened.

Baby Molly Olivia Hutson arrived in the early hours of Saturday morning! We send our love and congratulations to Amy, Alasdair, and Beatrice. (We're also very impressed that Alasdair didn't attend the beer festival on Saturday afternoon with a pram...)

Hilda’s Heirs! Wow it is great to have an event celebrating women in faith at the Minster!

Hilda’s Heirs 11th March 2023 10:30-3:30pm

“Hilda’s Heirs is a fun day of activities celebrating women and girls in mission and ministry. It is based at Hull Minster but includes an optional treasure hunt around the city.

Children and young people are invited to attend with leaders from their groups or their family. Activities include: brass rubbing, designing stained glass windows and a Minster Mystery Trail.

For the safety of all children during the school holidays and for a restful time for all staff who work in schools.
