Minster Lifeline 13

REV. IRENE writes:

THE CLERGY TEAM WISH EVERYONE A HAPPY EASTER

After celebrating Palm Sunday with lots of palm branches and Hosannas we now walk through Holy Week together.

Easter holds a mixture of emotions from sadness to celebration. In everyday life we also have to cope with times of sadness and times of joy. As Christians we have the assurance that Christ walks with us and when we need him most he will ‘prop us up’.

Before Jesus left this earth, he spoke the following words to his disciples, “And behold, I am always with you, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).

During the 9:30 service the people went out through the North Door and round to the West Door, singing and waving the palm trees that the children had made.

Over Easter the Minster is open normal times Tuesday – Saturday with extra Easter services (see below) and normal Sunday services.

The café is open all week including Good Friday, closed Easter Monday.

Val talks about the importance of Easter

WHAT IS EASTER TO YOU?

PART TWO

Despite being told by Jesus many times that he would only be with them for a brief time, the disciples couldn’t understand it.  That is, not until that night in the Garden of Gethsemane when the soldiers came for him, betrayed by one of his own, Judas Iscariot.  This is where they went after they had shared the last supper.

Can you imagine the scene.  Jesus had been praying and sweating drops of blood as he asked his Father if it would be possible for this cup to pass from him, nevertheless, not his own will, but God’s.  Now he is facing a group of soldiers who have come to take him on that road that led to Calvary, his death, and our redemption.  Impetuous Peter took a sword and cut off the ear of the High Priest’s servant, a somewhat futile if understandable gesture.  The response of Jesus: he put his hand out and healed the man.

The scriptures tell us, “God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whosoever believed on him would not die, but have eternal life” (John 3:16).  That promise came at great cost.  On what we call Good Friday, Jesus was taken to the hill of Golgotha (meaning the place of a skull), where along with two other men who were criminals, he was nailed to a wooden cross, wearing a crown of thorns.  It was the cruellest form of death ever invented by man.

Why did he do this?  He did it because God required a sacrifice so that our sins could be forgiven.  He did it because he loved us so much, he was willing to suffer and die for us.

But that wasn’t the end!  Early on Sunday morning when the women came to the tomb, the wonderful truth was revealed.  HE’S ALIVE!  Many years ago, a priest called Don Francisco wrote and sang a song:  “He’s alive and I’m forgiven, heavens gates are open wide…”!

So, what is Easter to you?  Is it just another holiday where the kids have Easter eggs?  Or is it a time of celebration that Jesus loved us so much, he gave his life up on the cross and then rose again before ascending into heaven.  The great truth of Easter is:  HE’S ALIVE, AND I’M FORGIVEN!

GIVING AT HULL MINSTER  On behalf of the finance committee, we wanted to share with you something about Hull Minster finances and our giving.  Firstly, to say THANK YOU – thank you to each person that gives, as without our giving we could not keep Hull Minster open and do all that we do in the Minster, local community, schools and the city. It costs around £1,000 a day to run the Minster, and every penny is raised locally through our giving, grants, the café, shop, and events.

We are now in the season of Lent, the period of time set aside in preparation for Easter when we are all invited to deepen our discipleship. We might observe this through fasting each week or from particular foods, and setting time aside for prayer.  The purpose is to consider where we are in our walk with God and to intentionally go deeper in that walk.

Giving is part of our discipleship, Jesus talked about where your money is, there your heart will be.

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21

Lent also provides an invitation for us to consider our giving. One of the best things we can do is to give regularly, and we have a parish giving scheme that makes this very simple to do. If you consider that Hull Minster is your church, and you want to start giving regularly you can find out more on the website here https://hullminster.org/give or please come and speak to a member of the clergy or finance committee. Giving regularly helps with a steady flow of income and if you Gift-Aid we can claim back an extra 25%. If you already give regularly, thank you. Maybe during this period of Lent, you might prayerfully review your giving.

“Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not regretfully or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7

KATE GOFORTH SHARES WITH US: AN EVENING IN THE MINSTER

It was lovely to see so many people come into the Minster on Saturday 18th March when the Freedom Festival 'Awakening' was taking place in Trinity Square.

Families were sitting in the chairs set out for breakfast church while their children played on the mats. Two young girls were knelt down praying at the back of the church in front of the board explaining what prayer is. Three girls were kneeling in the Broadley chapel at the altar rail. Families were on a move hunt and a lot of people took the time to look at the quilt dedicated to loved ones lost to suicide.  There were so many candles lit at the altar they were stacked up double and at one point, Andy the volunteer had to use his coffee to put out the flames. Overall, some 5,700 people visited over the day.

Junior Church at 11 a.m. re-enacted the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan.

This activity helped prepare the young people for the baptism of Hamish during our 11 a.m. service next week. This will be an exciting service as we bring together Mothering Sunday and Hamish’s baptism. (Hamish is the grandson of Sarah and nephew of Ben both from the choir)

International Women's Day celebrations - St Hilda’s Heirs

This last Saturday we celebrated International Women's Day with a themed day of worship and fun activities. Together with members of the Methodist community, and the general public, lots of people (men too!!!) learned about the contribution that women have made to faith, beginning with the Abbess of Whitby, St Hilda.

The life of ministry undertaken by so many women in Christianity today was celebrated with communion presided over by Bishop Eleanor. Reverend Louise looked after the prayer room in our newly refurbished Broadley Chapel. Girls Brigade groups came together to join in the fun. Lots of families also came along to enjoy the trails and treasure hunts, crafts and activities which were on offer. Diocesan Children's Advisor, Carolyn Edwards, coordinated the event with Hull Minster and was delighted with the atmosphere and enjoyment in the church.  Jane Owen

STEPPING UP

GROWING NEW DISCIPLES IN PLACES WHERE

LIFE IS TOUGH.

A new Stepping Up learning Community will be starting in Hull after Easter.

Stepping Up provides an opportunity for lay people to come together once a week with people from other parishes in Hull to grow together as disciples of Jesus, and explore how to develop mission in their local community.

Over forty people have now completed Stepping Up in the urban and coastal communities of our York Diocese. They are involved in mission in their church and community in many different ways, and witnessing their churches grow as they share God’s love in the local community. You can read some of their stories and watch a video about Stepping Up here www.mseed.org

“Hilda’s Heirs is a fun day of activities celebrating women and girls in mission and ministry. It is based at Hull Minster but includes an optional treasure hunt around the city.

Children and young people are invited to attend with leaders from their groups or their family. Activities include: brass rubbing, designing stained glass windows and a Minster Mystery Trail.

The day will start with a short worship service and end with a communion led by Bishop Eleanor of Hull and Leslie Newton (Chair of the Methodist District). During the day there will be a variety of activities and crafts on offer. A soup and sandwich lunch will be provided by the Hull Minster Cafe.

We are asking for contributions of £5 per head (£15 per family) towards food and resources, but please get in touch with carolyn.edwards@yorkdiocese.org  or victoria@methodistyouth.org.uk if you need to discuss a bursary”.

You can book tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/hildas-heirs-tickets-525415009437

I am so excited to be taking part in this event which has been organised by the York Diocese. It is great to run a group for girls and be able to celebrate how amazing women are and how we can work together to learn more about God, our faith and share with others the amazing things he did for us. It is great for our girls and families to see how faith works through different people at different stages in their journey.

I hope to see you there,

Blessings
Lauren

Minster Lifeline 12

REV. IRENE writes:

We had a great discussion on Wednesday night at the Minster’s online Bible study as I spoke on being a priest. One of the greatest gifts of being a priest is to preside at the Lord’s Table as we share bread and wine together and also to be part of many ‘Life Events’. The opportunity to come close to families at their happiest and saddest times is a great privilege.

On Sunday both Rev. Rob and I were at baptism services. Rob was being a godfather and I baptised my first great grandchild Margot Elizabeth at Laxton village church. It was a time to emphasise the importance of the spiritual journey in our lives and the part the church family, parents and godparents play in this role.

Val talks about the importance of Easter

WHAT IS EASTER TO YOU?

PART ONE

“Easter is one of the principal holidays, or feasts, of Christianity. It marks the Resurrection of Jesus three days after his death by crucifixion. For many Christian churches, Easter is the joyful end to the Lenten season of fasting and penitence. The earliest recorded observance of Easter comes from the 2nd century, though it is likely that even the earliest Christians commemorated the Resurrection, which is an integral tenet of the faith (Britannia.com)”.  Going back to 325 AD, The Council of Nicaea decreed that Easter should be observed on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox (March 21st).  Therefore, Easter can fall on any Sunday between March 22nd and April 25th.

Those, if you like, are the facts.  Easter, however, is so much more than that.

Easter is pivotal to our Christian faith.  The reason for this is: Jesus not only died on the cross, but HE ROSE AGAIN ON THE THIRD DAY.  This is what marks out Christianity from all other religions.  We do not follow a leader who died and was buried, but one who died rose from the dead and is alive and reigns in heaven.

Remember all the scriptures we read at Christmas time regarding the birth of Jesus.  In Isaiah chapter 9 are those wonderful prophetic words: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder, and His name will be called WONDERFUL COUNSELOR, MIGHTY GOD, EVERLASTING FATHER, PRINCE OF PEACE.  In Luke chapter 2, we are told that an angel of the Lord came to the shepherds, declaring that a Saviour had been born in Bethlehem, Christ the Lord.  At that point, a whole multitude of angels joined him singing “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, goodwill toward men!”

We read in the Gospels, how Jesus grew up and started his ministry around the age of thirty: preaching the kingdom of God, healing people, delivering others from evil spirits and raising people from the dead.  He chose twelve men to be his close-knit group of disciples and over the next three years, they began to realise that this was not just a prophet but was indeed, the Son of God.

What we now call Palm Sunday, will be this Sunday 2nd April.  On that day Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey (as had been prophesied by Zechariah, 9:9).  Jesus was acclaimed by the crowd:  John 12:13. "They took branches of palm trees and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

In his famous poem, “The Donkey”, this despised and lowly animal, G. K. Chesterton wrote:  “Fools, for I also had my hour, one far fierce hour and sweet: There was a shout about my ears, and palms before my feet”.   (to be continued)

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH!!

This photograph was taken by Annabelle, our Head Chorister.

Jane Owen

It’s a drop in kind of day with activities such as stained glass, women’s trails and reflection and prayers stations, we’ll be making a wall of words commemorating women and contributing video reflections about women in ministry.

Celebrating women is everyone’s job! The day is open to all, not just women.

Hilda’s Heirs! Wow it is great to have an event celebrating women in faith at the Minster!

Hilda’s Heirs 11th March 2023 10:30-3:30pm

Blessings
Lauren

What a sight. The vicars’ vestry overflowing with spring colours. All ladies at both of our Sunday services last week received a primula plant as a gift for Mothering Sunday.

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH!!

Great excitement as Rob brought play dough to our 9:30 service! We had several examples of play dough Moses as a baby in a basket of bulrushes.

At our 11 a.m. service, we were delighted to baptise Hamish Alexander Newton, grandson of Sarah and nephew of Ben both from the choir. Hamish was such a delight and was so good, smiling as we welcomed him into God’s family.

Our choristers took a leading part in the service by reading Colossians 3. 12-17 and later leading us in intercessory prayers. We learned about the gifts of the Spirit and the picture here shows the display with hearts and ribbons with the names of those we love.

At both services, the plants were given out and enjoyed by all who received them.

LENT ZOOM BIBLE STUDY

This last week’s study led by Sam McGaw, was on the the subject of Discipleship.  The discussion on this was interesting and very wide-ranging

SPEAK THEIR NAME

These two pictures from this exhibition, are to help remember those who have taken their life.  Please pray for all the families affected by this.

Giving at Hull Minster

On behalf of the finance committee, we wanted to share with you something about Hull Minster finances and our giving.

Jane Owen

Minster Lifeline 10

REV. IRENE writes:

Minster on Sunday afternoon for the Sailors’ Service.

I am always delighted to see the young people, the dignitaries and the Trinity Brethren come together with the common bond of the sea. It makes me very proud to think that these young people are the future and yet apprehensive of what lay ahead.

The young man in the picture read the Sailors’ version of the 23rd psalm. His name is Jack, and he was so confident It was good to welcome the pupils from Trinity House Academy and TS Iron Duke into the and clear in his reading (not an easy task from the lectern with a couple of hundred people in front of you).

Well done, Jack!

Psalm 23 – Sailors’ version

The Lord is my pilot, I shall not drift
He guides me across the dark waters.
He steers me through deep channels. He keeps my log.
Yes, though I sail ‘mid the thunders and tempest of life,
I shall dread no danger, for He is with me;
His love and His care, shelter me.
He prepares a quiet harbour before me.
He anoints the wave with oil,
My ship rides calmly.
Surely sunlight and starlight
Shall guide me on the voyage I take,
And I will rest in heaven's port forever.

Minster Lifeline 9

REV. IRENE writes:

At our 9:30 service we learned about God speaking to Abraham. The children followed the route that Abraham took when he was instructed by God to leave his homeland of Ur, and follow God’s commands. In Genesis 26:4 Abraham was told his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky – hence the picture for colouring in

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH!!

Today in Junior Church we read the chapter about Jesus in Jerusalem (Luke 2). Jesus, having been missing for three days, was found safe and well in the temple talking and praying with the teachers there.

Today our focus was on prayer. We discussed questions like - What is a prayer and why is prayer important? How and where do we pray? How do we write a prayer?

In two weeks it will be Mother's Day. You will be able to hear the touching and thoughtful prayers that the children wrote when some of the children will be reading them aloud on the 19th March during the 11 o'clock service.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATION- HILDA’S HEIRS

We celebrate International Women’s Day this year with the help of the Diocese of York and the Methodist community in Hull. A fun packed day of activities which celebrate women in Ministry takes place on  SATURDAY 11th MARCH.   Called Hilda’s Heirs after the Abbess of Whitby, who one of the most important early Christian women, the day starts with a short service from the Bishop of Hull. It’s a drop in kind of day with activities such as stained glass, women’s trails and reflection and prayers stations, we’ll be making a wall of words commemorating women and contributing video reflections about women in ministry.

Celebrating women is everyone’s job! The day is open to all, not just women.

You can drop-in and pay £1 contribution towards materials or book for the day and have lunch included for £5. Book here https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/hildas-heirs-tickets-525415009437

EXCITING NEWS FOR A MEMBER OF THE CHOIR

It was great to see a young member of the choir being presented with a keyboard, as she had no access to one.

Generosity and financial gifts are critical to our work. Choral Scholarship funds enable the young people to develop their talents via musical instrument lessons. The talents of children cannot be nurtured without investment. In this spirit, Chelsey was gifted a keyboard on Sunday morning, so that she can practice at home. If you would like to contribute, please do get in touch.

DOING OUR PART FOR CLIMATE CHANGE

The Hull Minster team is keen to play a part in tackling climate change and biodiversity. The Minster has a long legacy of clergy, staff, and congregation cycling to worship and is working towards Cycle Friendly Employer status. As well as a secure home for bicycles the newly installed bike shelter has a wildlife roof.

Hull Minster has been working to improve and encourage sustainability for some years and was one of the first churches in the country to install solar panels.

FROM THE FINANCE COMMITTEE

Giving at Hull Minster

On behalf of the finance committee, we wanted to share with you something about Hull Minster finances and our giving.

Minster Lifeline 8

REV. IRENE writes:

Every weekend I think to myself ‘not got much for Lifeline this week’ yet by Sunday evening it is all there which shows there is lots happening each week at the Minster. Our vigil for Ukraine was very special on Saturday – one year and a day since the war began in Ukraine. You will see a couple of pictures later in Lifeline. We have some really good relationships with our Ukrainian friends and we hope they will drop into our ‘welcome café’ on a Thursday morning so we can develop further the link with them. Please continue to pray for a peaceful outcome and safety for all family members and friends that these people have had to leave behind.

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH!!

Junior Church continued their journey through the New Testament. Today they read the story about the visit of the Wise Men to worship baby Jesus. An interesting discussion followed about navigation and astrology then and now. A sample of frankincense was passed around much to the delight of some and not to others!  Then the children enthusiastically participated in a re-enactment of the story with Rev Rob playing the part if a very menacing King Herod.

IN THE BEGINNING…

Our all-age worship service this morning went back to Genesis, the first book of the bible, where we heard of the temptation in the garden of Eden. Our children made fruit trees with the serpent climbing up the trunk of the tree to remind them how easy it is to be tempted.

A NEW MEMBER OF THE CHOIR

Dylan joined us two weeks ago and has come from Highlands Primary School in North Bransholme. He’s very keen to learn and loved his first service, including wearing the robes! It’s been wonderful to welcome him and his family into the church and his mum is immensely proud (rightly so). It takes real courage to step into being a committed journey like this and the effort required from parents in terms of support (travel and time) is a real stretch for many in terms of daily life routines. Dylan is also very keen to learn the piano….so, we are currently arranging a teacher for him and will fund those lessons via the choral scholarship scheme. As ever, any support you can give re helping these youngsters realise their potential is much appreciated, in our community and the home communities of the choir children (Mark Keith, Director of Music)

PICTURE OF YET ANOTHER TALENTED MUSICIAN!

Juan Isaac is a very talented and precocious student at St Mary's who I am hoping will join the Minster family. I've offered the use of our piano for practice and would like eventually to entice him onto the organ. He's only in Year 7 but will be doing his Grade 5 at Easter. He's essentially self-taught, having only started lessons at Christmas, which makes him a little bit of a savant. He entertained everyone through coffee after the Sunday service and it was stunning!!

For the six weeks of Lent, different people from the group will each present their own interpretation of related topics.  This last week Becky Dexter took the theme of THE RHYTHM OF THE DAY reflecting the Northumbrian Community’s ordering of prayers and readings.  Becky is a very prayerful person and finds this a great help.  Her ideas of prayer baskets quite caught the imagination of the group.  If you want to know more, why not ask her?

Minster Lifeline 7

REV. IRENE writes:

As we move into the season of Lent we prepare our hearts and minds to remember Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. Of course we prepare in many different ways, introduce an extra time of prayer, do something we would not normally do, deprive ourselves of something etc.

We could commit ourselves to the Lenten Groups that are taking place, Pilgrim course Wednesday evening, START course Thursday mornings or our regular Bible Study – on line at Hull Minster/Bible Study 730 p.m. Wednesday evenings.

There are more details below of the two new Lent courses.

Whatever we do I hope it is a special personal time for each one of us.

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH!!

Not only pictures from our junior church this week but also our young people at the 9 30 service created camels, as we heard teaching about how hard it is for the rich man to enter the Kingdom of God but of course not impossible. Jesus replied to the people saying:

“With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”

Junior Church learned about the journey that Mary and Joseph took to Bethlehem, and the birth of our Lord Jesus

PILGRIM COURSE: TURNING TO CHRIST

What do Christians believe? Turning to Christ explores the heart of Christian belief through the six questions asked at baptism. Wednesday evenings in Lent at 7:00 pm from Ash Wednesday 22nd February.

START COURSE

Start Course: Thursdays in Lent 11:30 a.m. from 23rd February.

Got questions about life and the Christian faith? If you’re looking for answers then maybe it’s time to make a Start. Normally run in groups of about six to ten people, each session involves video clips, exercises, group discussion, and time for reflection. Each session lasts about an hour and is free to attend. - What’s life all about and where are we going? - Does God exist and what is He like? - Why is the world in such a mess? - Who was Jesus, and is He relevant? - What does Jesus’ death on the cross mean for me today? - How far can I go forward with God in my life?  ‘Start’ will help you discover more about God, Jesus, and the journey of life.

WELCOME CAFÉ (from strangers to friends)

You will see from the notice below that Thursday morning will become the Welcome Café from the 2nd March. Please do drop in and support whenever you can.

After Minster Praise on Thursday last week we were delighted to be entertained by a young man who has come to this country from Ukraine with his grandma, Olga. His name is Mykhalchenko Tirill he is 10 years old and plays the piano beautifully. A young man with so much talent playing from the heart with no music. What a delight this was to all of us. Mykhalchenko was thrilled when Dave Allum took him to play the grand piano in the church.

Val, as ever, produced a lovely cake, despite feeling poorly, which was enjoyed by everyone after the service.  The unexpected flowers were much appreciated by Julia.

If you are interested in finding out more about Stepping Up, please speak to Heather or contact her at heather.black@yorkdiocese.org T 07852151740

Hilda’s Heirs! Wow it is great to have an event celebrating women in faith at the Minster!

Hilda’s Heirs 11th March 2023 10:30-3:30pm

Blessings
Lauren

Minster Lifeline 6

REV. IRENE writes:

Do you remember a couple of months ago I talked about a charity called TWAM – Tools with a Mission. Since putting the information in Lifeline, we have managed to collect a huge amount of tools all ready to be refurbished. Husband Ian has delivered all that we collected to a base in Barton on Humber and from there they will be taken to Milton Keynes for the cleaning up and repair work to be done then finally shipped to Africa to provide tool kits for young people who are learning a trade such as a carpenter or electrician. This is such a great charity so please pass the word around we are always willing to collect.

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH!!

No exciting pictures this week as our young choristers had a holiday for half term. Well deserved! They will be back with us next week.

 BIBLE STUDY

This takes place, on Zoom, every Wednesday at 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. We will be studying Daniel this week but then we move into six weeks of study on Lent when different people in the groups will bring their own reflections on a particular aspect of interest to them. We will return to the study of Daniel after Easter.

WARM/LISTENING SPACE - see the important changes that are taking place

The 'Warm Space' provision has been in operation since early October, every Thursday. The take-up has been low in number, but we are not deterred.  It is the quality of the interaction that matters.

After much thought and discussion, it was our intention that the provision be known as ‘Listening Space’, simply because that’s what we do. Listen. During the morning this will run alongside the ‘welcome café’ making sure there will always be the opportunity for a quiet space or a one-to-one chat if needed.

There's still the offering of tea, coffee and biscuits and, across lunch time, home-made soup.

However, from 2nd March it will be known as:

WELCOME CAFÉ (from strangers to friends)

You will see from the notice below that Thursday morning will become the Welcome Café from the 2nd March. Please do drop in and support whenever you can.

DIARY FOR THE NEXT FOUR WEEKS

Minster Lifeline 5

REV. IRENE writes:

.It is so good on a Sunday morning to see people on a regular basis as well as visitors to the area. I had a lovely surprise on Sunday last week when Rob Carlisle (who welcomes at the 11 a.m. service) brought along his brother Stuart and his wife Cath. Stuart and Cath were one of the first couples I met when I started visiting Hull in the 60’s having met my husband from Hull whilst he was holidaying in Scarborough. Fifty years since I last saw them!!

You will read about our young choristers later in this Lifeline.  Not only is it good to have them singing with us, but it is also great to meet their parents/grandparents/carers who bring them along each Sunday morning and stay to worship with us. I hope you have all received a warm welcome.

It is of course a huge commitment for parents as well as the children to be part of Hull Minster as it is not only Sunday morning but Friday evening practice and Saturday singing school.

As these children grow in confidence we pray that they will experience the love of Jesus in the words that they sing.

RADIO HUMBERSIDE THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

As I rode down Cottingham Road the other day a slogan outside one of the churches caught my eye. It said something like ‘what’s important to you – the love of power or the power of love’?

I am sure that many of you will have ridden or walked past these signs outside churches and even if you have read it may not have thought anything more about it.

This one stuck in my mind as I realised how dangerous the love of power can become. A few days later I picked up on the news the article about the desperate people who were not able to pay their energy bills and so had fallen into arrears. The consequence of this was changing people’s meters to pre-payment meters. I was quite disturbed to hear one of the bailiffs saying going into a house to do this was the best part of the job and it made me realise how the love of power can become seductive. I would like to think this person was a one-off and that most who have to do such a harrowing job would do it with compassion and care.

If only the love of power could become the power of love! It surely is so much more productive if we live by love and not power: love for our neighbours and one another, being there for each other, and working for the good of all.

As Christians, we know that Jesus showed the ultimate love by dying for us and all people and offering each of us eternal life.

THIS WEEK’S GALLERY

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH!!

This week our junior church moved from the Old Testament to the New. The exciting story about the angel Gabriel that appeared to Mary was the first lesson. The group also looked at the words of the Magnificat, beautiful words spoken by Mary after the angel had spoken to her. Many of the children were familiar with the words having sung The Magnificat during Evensong. (Below - this is what KEEN looks like!)

Sunday morning was a moving time for us. It was a real treat for us to formally admit seven choristers into the choir, and to present them with their surplices. It was also wonderful that their families came up to participate. We are very proud of the progress these children have made, and very grateful to their families for the support and time they commit to enable this progress.

And more! We welcomed two probationary choristers into our ranks. Leila and Aria attended their first choir rehearsal on Friday, and bravely decided that they were ready to try their first choral service. This can be a very daunting experience, and they handled it with aplomb!

We are currently inviting children to become choristers as part of our Choral Strategy work in six Hull primary schools. All of the schools have now developed excellent cultures of classroom singing, and their school choirs are blossoming. Many children have expressed interest re becoming a chorister at Hull Minster. However, the recurring barrier facing most of these children is transport. All too often parents work long hours or struggle to find accessible means of transportation. Therefore, we are seeking to establish a minibus service (Friday evenings, occasional Saturdays, and Sunday mornings) to help overcome these barriers. One of the most important factors will be finding enough volunteer drivers to help make this happen. Could this be you? Do you know someone who would like to get involved? Many of us benefitted hugely from the generosity of community support during our formative years. It would be fantastic to continue this proud tradition of community generosity for the new (and future) generation.

Finally, we would love to see you all at Choral Evensong on Saturday the 18th February (16:00).  Mark

 REV. DOMINIC writes:

Following on from the fabulous Scientists in Congregations project around Gaia we were delighted to welcome the York Based Riding Light's Theatre Company's latest production 'The Uneasy Sleeps of Max Maxwell' exploring through drama the growing role that AI (Artificial Intelligence) is having and will have on our society. After the interval, the show was followed by an absolutely fascinating question and answer session with four expert scientists in the field. The panel explained what this technology was about and the tremendous potential for good, especially in medicine and health and the deep ethical questions that need to be addressed. There was a plea from the scientists that Christians need to understand these issues and bring the deep wisdom of our faith into these important debates. The Church needs to be involved in the conversation between science and faith and society. Please pray for the cast and crew as they tour the show around the country, that was show number three of twenty!

DIARY FOR THE NEXT FOUR WEEKS

Minster Lifeline 4

REV. IRENE writes:

As I drove past the Baptist Church on Cottingham Road, I saw a new poster on their notice board which read:

Do you follow the ‘love of power’ or the ‘power of love’.

I was struck by those words and then was told that a common phrase in a Jimi Hendrick song is ‘when the power of love overcomes the love of power there will be peace’.

These words must bear some truth as so often the love of power takes over and leads to conflict, suffering, and unrest. Yet!  Jesus offers us the power of love and we know through the bible that that power can move mountains.

I hope that as I read those words so will thousands of others and in doing so may be encouraged to "Be kind, compassionate, and forgiving to each other, in the same way God forgave us in Christ." Only through this can the power of love overcome the love of power.

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH!!

Junior Church - over the last 12 months the young people have been working through the books of the Old Testament. On Sunday we finally got to the Book of Daniel. The lions’ den was filled with fierce creatures, thanks to Tom and Katie P, guarded well by Oliver and Jess! Dan made an excellent Daniel, and Rev Rob was King Darius. Great fun was had!

DAVE AND JULIA ALLUM CELEBRATE

Sunday was the 85th birthday of our dear friend Dave Allum. We were delighted to present him with his favourite drink and a voucher for afternoon tea at Rowley Manor, and Julia with flowers.  Dave recently stood down from the role of verger after many years of service.  Prior to this, he served as Churchwarden. Having said that he is not ‘disappearing’!  Not only will he be in church for his Saturday duty manager role he will be standing in for Jon when Jon goes on holidays etc.

Dave and Julia are great role models.  Without fuss they always make sure that people in their church family are cared for. They are the first to visit if someone is not well and can always be relied upon.

BAPTISM OF LAYTON AND GEORGE

Pollyanna and Charlie have been part of our 9:30 service for several months now and on Sunday lunchtime Layton and George were baptised.

It was a great pleasure baptising the children and knowing that their parents and godparents made promises for them to grow in their Christian faith.

In August Charlie and Pollyanna are also being married at the Minster. What a great example of young people making the decision as adults to follow Jesus and to encourage their family to know of His love.

EXCITING JUNIOR CHURCH!!

From Daniel to Jonah!

Great excitement at Junior Church as the children re-enacted the story of Jonah.

After many weeks of looking at Old Testament stories next week begins the life of Jesus as they visit the New Testament gospels.
