Hull Minster Lifeline - March 2026

Lifeline for Holy Week and Easter:

Dear friends in Christ,

As we enter Holy Week and approach the joy of Easter, the Church invites us once again to stand at the very heart of the Christian faith: the cross and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Holy Week reminds us of a profound truth about the human condition — that we cannot save ourselves. However much progress we make in knowledge, technology, or society, the deeper problems of the human heart remain: sin, brokenness, fear, and death (Romans 3:23-24). The world does not simply need improvement; it needs redemption. It needs a Saviour.

As Clement, one of the earliest bishops of the church wrote;

'In our sickness we need a saviour, in our wanderings a guide, in our blindness someone to show us the light, in our thirst the fountain of living water which quenches for ever the thirst of those who drink from it. We dead people need life, we sheep need a shepherd, we children need a teacher, the whole world needs Jesus.' Clement of Alexandria (c. 150- c.215)

The good news of the Gospel is that God has not left us to face these realities alone.

In Jesus Christ, God entered our world. On the cross, Jesus bore the weight of our sin and the depth of our suffering. He took upon himself all that separates us from God.

St Peter wrote'

'24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.' (1 Peter 2:24-25). His sacrifice was not merely an example of love; it was love accomplishing our salvation. Through his death, the power of sin is broken. Through his resurrection, new life is opened to all who trust in him.

Easter morning proclaims the victory of God’s grace. The tomb is empty. Death is defeated. Hope is alive.

This is not only a message for us to receive—it is a message we are called to share.

Jesus tells his followers that they are to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. (Matthew 5:13-16) In a time when many people feel uncertain, anxious, or searching for meaning, the witness of Christians matters more than ever. We are called to reflect the light of Christ in our homes, our workplaces, our schools, and our communities.

To be salt and light means living lives shaped by the cross and resurrection:
showing forgiveness where there is hurt,
offering hope where there is despair,
bringing kindness where there is indifference,
and pointing others toward the love of Christ.

This Easter, may we remember again what Jesus has done for us. May we give thanks for the Saviour who gave his life for the world. And may we go out with renewed faith and courage to live as his people—salt and light in the places where God has put us.

I wish you and your families a blessed Holy Week and a joyful Easter.

Yours in Christ,
Canon Dominic Black

A reminder of our services below

Amy

Huge congratulations to our very own Head Chorister, Amy, who has officially been awarded the prestigious RSCM Gold Award (Voices for Life)!

This is the premier achievement for young choristers across the country, it isn't just about having a brilliant voice!

To reach Gold standard, Amy had to master complex solo and choral repertoire, demonstrate a high level of sight reading and aural skills, and have a deepened knowledge of church music, tradition, and choral leadership.

Listen to the music playing behind these photos; this is just one of the many pieces she has had to master!

It truly takes a village to build a chorister. A massive thank you to the entire Choral Hull Team, our dedicated singing teachers, and every choir member and musician who has supported Amy on this journey.

Amy is already showing her true team spirit by stepping up at Junior Church, helping the next generation of choristers work toward their own awards!

Top job, Amy! We are so proud of you.

Visitors Book

Could we all actively encourage people to fill in the visitors book PLEASE especially if they have come from other countries. We can then use their comments and countries, for marketing purposes promoting the diversity of our visitor community.

We love every single one of our volunteers

But here is a little thank you for two specifically.,

Jill & Tracy
From  the bottom of our hearts - thank you!!
You two pour out time like it’s endless and you’re no strangers to 16 hours days of hard labour
Your enthusiasm is contagious and your sheer physical grit makes the rest of us look lazy.
You lift boxes, scrub toilets, empty bins, set up chairs, haul tables, stuff other people may not even notice and that’s before the events even start and what’s more you do it with smiles, with zero complaints, like it’s the most natural thing in the world.
We don’t say it enough: you’re the heartbeat behind so much of what happens here. Not just volunteers—you’re the ones who make this place feel like home.
So tonight, please know this: we see you. We’re grateful. And we love you for it.
—With all the thanks we’ve got,
The Hull Minster Family

WINDOW UPDATE: THANK YOU HULL!

It's not pretty, but it stops the pigeons getting in!

We have finally been able to put a temporary cover over the rugby ball-sized hole in our west window, in part thanks to the £3,000 we have so far raised through our GoFundMe!

There is still lots of work to do to restore our window: you can learn more about it on our fundraising page linked below:

All of us at Hull Minster extend our sincerest thanks to everybody who has donated so far: let's preserve our stained glass for the next generation
