Hull Minster Lifeline - May 2026

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

As we celebrate the great feast of Pentecost this Sunday, we give thanks for the gift of the Holy Spirit poured out upon the Church with power, joy, and hope. The Spirit who descended upon the disciples in Jerusalem continues to breathe life into the Church today, filling us with courage, faith, and the fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

At Hull Minster, our vision is to follow Jesus, build community, and nurture living heritage. We do these things not by our own strength alone, but through the grace and power of the Holy Spirit at work among us. Pentecost reminds us that the Church was born as a community of many races, languages, and nations gathered together as one people in Christ. That same vision of God’s kingdom continues to shape our common life today. In a society where division, suspicion, and hostility can too often take root, the Church is called to be a different kind of sign: a witness to deeper unity amidst rich diversity. We reject the temptation to “other” one another or to sow enmity between peoples. Instead, we seek to become a community where every person is welcomed, valued, and loved as a child of God. In our worship, fellowship, and service, we pray that Hull Minster may reflect something of the beauty of God’s kingdom — people of different backgrounds and stories united in Christ by the Holy Spirit.

Thank you to everyone who contributes to the life of our Minster through prayer, service, generosity, music, hospitality, care for one another, and countless unseen acts of faithfulness. Every contribution matters. Together, by the Spirit’s leading, we continue to grow as a living community of hope in the heart of our city.

May the Holy Spirit renew us afresh this Pentecost and guide us ever more deeply into the life and love of Christ.

💚Dear Don

I wanted to say a huge thank you for all the wonderful care you give to our plant boxes. They look so healthy and beautiful, and they really brighten up the whole area.
I also wanted to thank you especially for the lovely centre pieces you made for the tables in the church café. They’ve received so many compliments and have made the space feel so welcoming and special. Your thoughtfulness and creativity are greatly appreciated by everyone who visits.
Thank you again for your kindness and for giving your time and talent so generously.
With warmest thanks,

The Hull Minster Cafe Ladies

💚Black Palace

We were turned upside down as we played our part supporting the filming.

We were dressing and green rooms.

It has brought in well needed revenue too.

I have been working night shifts so I’m going for a sleep.

💚Parish Notice – Pentecost Sunday (24th May 2026)

You are warmly invited to a Bring and Share Lunch on Pentecost Sunday, 24th May, at 1:00pm. All are welcome—please bring a dish to share if you are able.

At the 11:00am Holy Communion, we hope to reflect the spirit of Pentecost by celebrating the many languages within our congregation. As on the first day of Pentecost, when people heard the good news in their own tongues, we would love to include readings and intercessions in a variety of languages.

If you would like to take part by offering a reading or prayer in your mother tongue, please speak to Canon Dominic or Revd Rob.

We look forward to celebrating together!

Dominic

💚Hull Minster Launches Renewed Appeal to Repair Damaged Victorian Stained Glass Windows

Hull Minster launches major appeal to restore stained glass windows

Hull Minster is appealing for public support to help fund the repair and conservation of its historic stained glass windows, following damage sustained to the church’s Great West Window in February 2026.

The incident, caused by a rugby ball striking the window, prompted an immediate fundraising effort to secure emergency repairs and begin the process of pursuing full restoration through the Diocese of York. Thanks to the generosity of supporters, the appeal has already raised more than £8,000, enabling temporary repairs to be carried out and essential next steps to be taken.

Hull Minster has expressed its sincere thanks to all those who have donated so far.

However, the damage to the Minster’s windows extends far beyond the recent incident. A wider condition assessment undertaken by the York Glaziers Trust in winter 2025 identified a much broader programme of repairs across the building, with the total cost of works estimated at around £30,000, excluding access costs.

The repair programme includes work to the Minster’s principal East and West Windows, glazing in the bell tower, stained glass in the North Transept, and damaged windows along the north side of the nave. In a number of cases, the leadwork and supporting structure have deteriorated over time, while some panes have also been damaged by a range of causes including birds and air rifle impacts.

In recent weeks, Hull Minster has been approached by anonymous benefactors, who have offered a significant boost to the appeal. They have pledged to match every pound donated between now and the completion of the West Window repairs, up to a total of £15,000.

This means that every public donation made to the appeal during this period will effectively be doubled.

The Minster says this presents a remarkable opportunity not only to preserve and restore an important part of Hull’s heritage, but also to improve the building’s environmental performance. Weather-tight windows are vital not just for conservation, but also for helping to reduce heat loss and improve the Minster’s long-term sustainability.

Hull Minster’s Heritage Manager, James Cameron:

“The repair of these windows is about far more than restoring beautiful stained glass. It is about protecting a major part of Hull’s heritage, improving the resilience of the building, and helping ensure Hull Minster remains sustainable for the future.

We are deeply grateful for the support already shown, and this new match-funding opportunity gives us a real chance to make lasting progress.”

Hull Minster is now encouraging supporters, local stakeholders, and all those with an interest in preserving the city’s history to contribute to the Stained Glass Appeal and to help spread the word.

The Minster also plans to work with partners across the city and to develop a programme of special events and activities in the coming months to raise awareness of the appeal and the significance of its stained glass.

As a further thank you to supporters, Hull Minster intends to host a Fundraising Party on Saturday 8 August for those who have donated via its GoFundMe page. Further details will be announced in due course.

Together, we can help save Hull Minster’s stained glass and preserve an irreplaceable part of the city’s heritage.
