Have you seen the beautiful Easter garden full of Easter people? You can find the garden in the chancel at the Minster. It is growing weekly as more children (and adults) add people to this Easter scene. The children and adults love choosing their outfits and hair and really enter in with creativity and imagination.

With each family over Easter, we sat around the garden and reflected on the Easter story, and then they chose where their person was in the story.  Some said they wanted to watch by the cross, others wanted to be first to the tomb to find it was empty, others were disciples running to hear the Good News, others were on the edge watching and wondering what it all means.

We had a wonderful time entering deeply into the Easter story – so thank you for helping to make it happen.

The garden will be in the Minster over the coming weeks so if you have the opportunity do visit.

On the 2nd of April 1982 Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands, a British territory in the South Atlantic.

A vast task force of British ships was quickly assembled. The ships consisted of Royal Navy and merchant ships taken up from trade. Nine of the Merchant ships were requisitioned from Kingston upon Hull, the most any city provided.

The P&O ferry MV Norland was converted to a troop carrier and embarked the troops from the 2nd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment, five deep sea trawlers were at sea fishing and told to go immediately to Rosyth in Scotland, their catch was off loaded and they were converted to mine sweepers and commissioned into the 11th Mine Counter Measures squadron (11MCM) of the Royal Navy, the ships were HMS Northella, HMS Farnella, HMS Cordella, HMS Junella and HMS Pict. Three deep sea Tugs were also provided Yorkshireman, Irishman and Salvageman.

All nine ships from Hull played a huge part in the conflict and on Sunday 19th June Hull Minster will once again play host to commemorate these ships and their crews. This has, for a number of years been one of the Minsters largest civic services and this year being the 40th anniversary is expected to attract over 500. It is hoped there will be a visiting Royal Naval ship in port for the weekend. The service will be led by Rev. Canon Dominic Black and Rev. Irene Wilson, who is honorary chaplain to 11MCM will preach. After the service, the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines will lead veterans to the cenotaph for a wreath laying.

Christian Aid Week is 15th to 21st May, and you may choose to do your Humber Bridge Cross then. This year’s theme is Hungry for Justice.

It’s the 40th Christian Aid Humber Bridge Cross!  Join the celebration!  Every year since 1982 we have crossed the Humber, either starting at Barton to work north or from Hessle to go south, then return.  Our one-day big event for this had to change during 2020 and 2021 lockdowns.  However, problems can lead us to new ways.  Support for Christian Aid when there were many needs was vital; and supporters did their own sponsored Bridge cross on the day they chose.  2022 is both a celebration, and a continuing contribution to Christian Aid’s work.

To mark the 40th Anniversary we are asking people to do the Humber Bridge Cross any day during the 40 days starting on Easter Monday (18th April) and ending on 27th May.  It will be great to know that individuals, friends, families, and church groups – and dogs on leads – will be helping others and enjoying a good walk.

 PRAYER POINTS FOR THE FIRST WEEK OF MAY

• We pray for a peaceful solution to the ongoing tension between Russia/Ukraine.  The prayer for Ukraine can be found on the Hull Minster website.

• We pray for Frankie Terry and George Mallinson being baptised at the Minster this Sunday and for their parents and godparents as they support them in their journey of faith.

• Please pray for the Annual Parochial Church Meeting to be held on the 8th May

ALLELUIA CHRIST IS RISEN

There has been a wide variety of worship taking place at the Minster over the Easter weekend including messy church on Good Friday, Easter vigil on Saturday evening, Easter worship and baptism on Sunday morning and culminating with ‘Raised’ a service of praise held in Trinity Square on Sunday afternoon. Varied though these services may have been, they all proclaimed the wonder of God’s love given to us at the cross on Good Friday and the celebration of the Risen Lord on Easter Day. For those who could not make it into church we hope that you also felt the love of Jesus’ gift to us no matter where you were.

Easter blessing to you all!

RE Ambassadors give us a thumbs up!

We were delighted to host Hull’s 10-year-old RE Ambassadors to try out some schools' workshops. They enjoyed our “Strength and Shield” workshop, exploring their own talents and personality and expressing them on shields like the families buried in the church.

As we’re in lent, Verger, Jon Major set up the

communion table where they explored the story of the Last Supper and thought about the meaning of the act of remembering Jesus through communion. They had some wonderful things to say about it.

Michael age 10 said “I learnt about communion artefacts: 5 crosses on the communion table represent the wounds of Jesus on the cross.”

Josie studied our 1711 painting by Parmentier and said “If Jesus, Mary, and Joseph lived in a warm country why are people represented as white on the painting? They should be tan. This may be because when the painting was made, white people were seen as superior”

After a pizza lunch up the tower, the children met Reverend Ian and then watched some of the Wednesday communion service while they waited for the bus.

How we can make a difference.

 As many of you will know, our Choral Strategy enables us to teach singing to 400 children per week. We teach them during curriculum time as year/class groups (five primary schools and one secondary school). It's a joyous thing and a privilege to do (more of this in another article coming soon!). 

Part of our work involves listening to children sing individually to monitor the progress they are making, and this process helps us to discover those children that have a real gift for music/singing. 

One of our key aims is to connect communities by enabling the children to participate in city-based group activities. All too often we discover that the children/families tend not to venture out of their local communities. The main reason behind this isolation is transport. 

Parents are often too busy trying to scrape a decent living together to be able to commit to the time/cost of enabling their kids to get into the city centre. Public transport is variable and there are no safe means of children travelling without parental supervision. 

However...! Could WE solve this problem? 

If we could, Hull Minster would be able to develop the children's choir and provide fantastic education opportunities for a new generation of choristers. 

How can we do this? 

Well...East Hull Community Transport have offered us the use of their equipment at weekends. They can't provide a driver without paying them for an entire day, but the invitation to form a partnership has been made! 

Next steps? 

If we can muster a team of volunteer drivers for Sunday mornings (at least 5 people to spread the burden), we will have solved the biggest barrier to kids becoming members of the choir! 

Time is precious, for volunteers, but also for opportunity...we don't want to let this opportunity drift if we can help it. 

So, if you gained a driving licence before 1997 (or have a suitable licence for minibus driving) and would like to be part of this volunteer team we would all be thrilled. 

The drivers would be accompanied by a choir adult to supervise the children during journeys. 

This is where our church community can really make a difference to the future of our city.

Sharing with you the Thought for the Day which went out on Tuesday morning at the unsociable time of 6 40 a.m.!

Good morning

As we move towards better weather and lighter nights many will be thinking about journeys. It could be a journey to the seaside, countryside or maybe further afield using many different modes of transport. For most it will be a pleasant and enjoyable experience, for some, opportunities to have a break from work, to be with friends and families - you could say to ‘recharge your batteries.’

However, as many journey out of the country for pleasure we see others arriving having travelled for a very different reason. We remember that to our Ukrainian friends there is nothing pleasurable about the journeys they are having to make. The hardship is beyond our imagination, leaving homes with nothing, often fighting for their lives to get to a place of safety. The journeys they are making are often their only opportunity between life and death. We are beginning to see Ukrainian refugees enter our country now and although this is not what they imagined just a few weeks ago we hope that they will be welcomed and able to feel safe and secure in their temporary homes.

Another journey that is remembered at this time is the journey through Holy Week, the journey that Jesus took to the cross. Christians will be journeying this week towards Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Day. Jesus knew what it was like to be a refugee having fled to Egypt after his birth, he also knew what it was like to suffer, as he died on the cross. Jesus died so that we may live, telling us to love God and love one another. Let us stretch out our arms and love to all those who journey to our country to find sanctuary and peace.

EASTER AT HULL MINSTER - Rev. Dominic

Holy Week and Easter is the highlight of the Christian year when we remember Jesus dying and rising again for our salvation and we look forward to welcoming you to join the journey. The week begins on Palm Sunday at our 10.30am Holy Communion we remember Jesus' triumphant entry on a donkey to Jerusalem as a carpet of palms was laid before him and hear the story of Holy Week from the Gospel of Luke. On Maundy Thursday at 7.30pm we remember Jesus' last supper with his disciples. On Good Friday between 10am and 12noon we have a special Messy Church for families to hear the story of Easter through craft and story. The Minster will be open for personal prayer between 12 and 3pm finishing with the Good Friday Liturgy at 3pm where we hear the passion according to St John and reflect on what Jesus did for us on the cross. The celebration of Easter begins with the candlelit Easter Vigil Eucharist at 8pm as we hear the story of God's creation and redemption finishing with proclamation of the resurrection. On Easter Sunday morning we gather for our 10.30am Holy Communion to celebrate the resurrection and welcome Aurora Jeffries into the church as she is baptised. Easter Sunday is rounded off at 4pm by a gathering of Christians from around the city at Trinity Square for Raised: Easter Praise 2022.

Minster Lifeline 11 2022

If you were not able to be there, I hope you managed to listen to ‘Any Questions’ on Radio 4. There was a good audience and varied group of people asking questions to the panel. The flexibility of the Minster is ideal for all types of events and very soon it will be time for the Beer Festival again.

We are delighted that the heating is back on and the Minster once more is comfortable to be in. Work along the south side of the Minster is progressing well albeit a little slower than anticipated. In the meantime, everyone is doing their best to produce hot drinks after services and for all our volunteers during the week, not an easy task as the kitchen is completely out of action so ‘thank you’ to all involved.

As you will see from the photograph the prayer shawl ministry continues to flourish. The picture is Mandy wrapped up in her new scarf. She says a big ‘thank you’ as she thinks of all the prayers said for her by those involved in the making

The kneelers, seat cushions and stools in Hull Minster are unique. Many have graced our lovely church for over 50 years. The project began in 1971, the last few pieces being completed in the early 1990s. Marjorie Brown, the amazing lady who masterminded the whole scheme was in her mid 60s when the project began & late 80s when it was nearing completion. She was an inspiration & eventually had over 100 embroiderers working for her & I was one of them. I am privileged to be the custodian of all the data and the original designs she collected during the project. All that I look after will eventually be on the Minster Database for all to see.

So it was with a heavy heart that I agreed that some of the kneelers needed to be moved on, now we no longer have space for them as so many of the pews have been removed. The selection of kneelers to has been very sensitively done. I would like to thank Jenny Harrison of the Shop Volunteer Team for all her help in cleaning kneelers & in helping me decide which should be moved on & which we should keep. I am absolutely delighted to announce that 70 kneelers have gone to St Wilfred’s Church Ottringham, to replace their very old kneelers just like we did in the 1970s. I always hoped that they would go to another church where they can be used and cherished. A communion service & dedication of the kneelers in Ottringham Church took place on Sunday 3 April, Revd Irene Wilson, and Reader Sam McGaw officiating.

I can assure you that all seat cushions and stools, kneelers depicting companies and organisations will remain, as will many of the memorials. We have very carefully selected from the cross designs those memorial kneelers where there is no record of the person being remembered and those kneelers with no memorials at all. Marjorie’s notes are incomplete and wherever she had recorded details of the person the kneeler was dedicated to; we have kept those.

There are a very small number of kneelers left of the cross design without memorials as depicted in the photo, that we are selling. I feel it is only right that members of the congregation get the first chance to buy these. They are £25 each or more if you wish to make a further donation, as one member of the congregation has already very generously done. I will sell these on a first come first served basis. Easter at Hull Minster

Holy Week and Easter is the highlight of the Christian year when we remember Jesus dying and rising again for our salvation and we look forward to welcoming you to join the journey. The week begins on Palm Sunday at our 10.30am Holy Communion we remember Jesus' triumphant entry on a donkey to Jerusalem as a carpet of palms was laid before him and hear the story of Holy Week from the Gospel of Luke. On Maundy Thursday at 7.30pm we remember Jesus' last supper with his disciples. On Good Friday between 10am and 12noon we have a special Messy Church for families to hear the story of Easter through craft and story. The Minster will be open for personal prayer between 12 and 3pm finishing with the Good Friday Liturgy at 3pm where we hear the passion according to St John and reflect on what Jesus did for us on the cross. The celebration of Easter begins with the candlelit Easter Vigil Eucharist at 8pm as we hear the story of God's creation and redemption finishing with proclamation of the resurrection. On Easter Sunday morning we gather for our 10.30am Holy Communion to celebrate the resurrection and welcome Aurora Jeffries into the church as she is baptised. Easter Sunday is rounded off at 4pm by a gathering of Christians from around the city at Trinity Square for Raised: Easter Praise 2022.

It was great to welcome Edward, Benjamin and Elwyn yesterday lunchtime as their parents brought them to the Minster for baptism. These children are all regular visitors to ‘Little Fishes’, the toddler and baby group that meets on Friday mornings. They were well supported not only by their parents and godparents but also by a number of other Little Fishes families.

Baptism and confirmation are an important part of the Christian journey. Godparents have a responsibility to show their godchild the way of the Christian faith, to introduce them to Jesus and encourage them to continue on this journey so that when they are old enough to make their own choices, they can be confirmed choosing to make the promises made for them at baptism to be repeated in their own strength.

Many of the families at the service yesterday are keen to come along to the new 9:30 service where hopefully, there will be a considerable number of children and a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Jesus whether you are 0 to 90 you will be made very welcome!

A Revival for Hull Minster, bringing stories Back to Life

Hull Minster has been granted £248K by the Heritage Fund to build our team of volunteers and bring stories of Holy Trinity’s past back to life. We’ll be recruiting a Volunteering Manager, reporting to Reverend Rob Suekarran, to oversee all the volunteer activity including recruitment, training, and day to day management.

During lockdown, a team of volunteers worked together with Jane Owen researching themes and stories which would be interesting for the public and help the Minster get back on its feet after the pandemic. They put together talks, resources and trails which you can enjoy on the website – click at the top of the website HISTORY AND HERITAGE. Next, using finds from the excavated burial ground at Castle Street and artefacts from Hull Minster’s own collection, they will develop their ideas into visitor resources with stories, audio and digital exhibits and hands-on activities. These will be supported by material from the archives and library books. We hope this will bring visitors back us and give them an insight to church life in years gone by.

The project will also pay to restore eight of the Minster’s historic monuments and the biographies of those commemorated will be told. You’ll recognise names like Nicoluiz Anderson, Vicar of Holy Trinity in 1661, John Alderson, the surgeon general of Hull who opened a medical school in the 1800’s and Anthony Somerscales, the church warden, carried out building restoration in the early 1800’s and found the Unknown Lady effigy. They will all be restored to glory.

The rare medieval glass in the vicar’s vestry will be restored and moved to a new public setting with digital interpretation. Working with the University of York Department of Christianity of Culture to design the visitor resources, the volunteers will learn how to do audio description, record oral histories, and write and research articles and trails. There will also be training in being a tour guide for those who want to take that step and training in heritage care and cleaning. We hope to recruit lots of new volunteers to the Minster through this work over the coming year.

Glasgow Heraldry

With the Lottery players help, the Minster will be able to put on free drop-in activity days for the public as well as education workshops for schools. Paid internships for students will be available as part of the project and the University of Hull Department of Education Teaching and Childhood studies will be using Hull Minster as a teaching resource, making sure that the young teachers know how to use the rich and varied resources a church has to offer.With the Lottery players help, the Minster will be able to put on free drop-in activity days for the public as well as education workshops for schools. HEATING UPDATE

The new boiler house has been completed and the boiler reinstated. A new gas supply has been commissioned. This is all good news, and we are on track to have a fully heated Minster in time for Easter. The heating will be turned on at the end of March but due to the historic fabric of the building it will take us two weeks to get up to temperature.

Minster Lifeline 9 2022

Officially spring has arrived! There is something special about this time of year as we see new life in our fields and hedgerows. If you happen to be awake at dawn the chorus of birds singing is so wonderful. It is as though they have a new lease of life, and they want the whole world to hear it!

Yet with this season comes a time of hardship for many who are struggling to make ends meet. Essentials have often become luxuries so it is important for all of us to look out for one another and help in whatever way we can to ease the difficulties for those struggling.

We were delighted to see a good amount of people at our integration café last week, as well as cake and coffee there was great conversations taking place. Next month Jon, the Verger is taking a group for a tower tour during the coffee morning so let us pray for a good day so they can see the City of Hull in all its splendour from the top of the tower.

We are delighted that the new 9 30 ‘Big Breakfast’ service is starting soon. Please read our article by Reverend Rob bringing us up to date with all the planning.

In my previous life as a pioneer minister, I spent a lot of time thinking about what it means to be church. As a Multiply Minister, which is part of the Diocese of York’s strategy to reach those in their 20s-40s, much of my work was to prayerfully be among these people, seeking to connect with them, and see how this could grow into a mature expression of church. I didn’t know who I would meet, or what shape the community would take. I didn’t know who the leaders might be, but in faith I trusted that God was calling people in our local community to follow him. This, of course, turned out to be the case.

God is always calling people to find faith in Jesus Christ. And a key part of finding faith is to join the family of God, the church, the Body of Christ. But a key question for me in my previous ministry was, what shape should that expression of church take? In my own reflections I have come to the conclusion that no one shape is the right shape, and the shape that a church will take will reflect its people, its community, and of course the distinctive part of Body of Christ to which it belongs, which, in our case, is the Church of England.

One thing, however, that I do think is vitally important when thinking about what it means to be church, is the question: who are we? In other words, what is our identity? Because knowing who we are will affect how we see ourselves in relation to God and others and what we do.

Worship is at the heart of our identity in the Anglican Church. And so, in addition to our existing expressions of worship at Hull Minster, another expression of worship is beginning on Sunday 24th April at 9.30am (moving our existing Holy Communion service to 11am). The name for this service is still under discussion(!), but what I can say is that the service will be 45 minutes long, interactive, with all ages worshipping, learning, and growing together, beginning with toast at 9.15am. In our first sequence of services, we shall be pondering what it means to be church, learning from the early chapters of the book of Acts.

It is my prayer that God will help more and more people to find faith through the diverse worship found at Hull Minster, that we might grow in our witness and ministry in this city and beyond. I hope you will join me in praying for this new service, and perhaps even join in if you feel God is calling you to this particular expression of worship.  Also, please do invite anyone you know for who might be interested in coming.

Minster Lifeline 8 2022

A big ‘thank you’ to all who helped at the integration café last week. We were delighted to meet some of our friends who are refugees from around the world and to share fellowship and friendship with them. Many are returning next month and looking forward to Jon taking them on a tour of the tower.

It was good to hold the Sailors’ service again in the Minster after a two-year break during Covid. We were delighted to see the year 7  pupils from Trinity House School and the cadets from TS Iron Duke. Good to have Father Herbert speak about the Mission to Seafarers. Hope to keep good inks with this great organisation.

This week Louise writes “Who am I”

My first month at Hull Minster has been full of surprises! I love the building and was blown away by John Major’s tower tour telling me some of the history of the place. I cannot believe how much goes on at the Minster, the many wonderful people who participate in the work and ministry here, the way the Minster reaches out to the community and opens its doors welcoming visitors. I feel very privileged to be a part of this amazing place for my curacy and thank God for making it possible for me to come here. I look forward to meeting and getting to know more of you, properly, and ask you to be patient with me as I learn your names and get my head around all that happens here. I also look forward to seeing what God is wanting to do in and through us all, creating here at Hull Minster a community of believers, each with a different part to play but which together brings glory to Him.

As we are entering Lent and some of us are looking this week at Identity and Belonging in the Hamilton Lent Groups, it feels strange to be writing something for Lifeline to introduce myself!

 I grew up in Poole in Dorset, hence the southern accent which somehow, I have retained despite living in the North of England for thirty years. I invited Jesus into my life at the age of nine and recommitted my life to God as a teenager and was confirmed in Poole Parish Church, where I also rang bells (not very well!)  Originally, I trained as a nurse in London, before going to Southampton to train as a midwife, because I had always thought that God might call me into missions overseas.

When I realised that I was not going to hear a voice from heaven calling me, I decided to do a missionary training course, and ended up going to St Helen’s in Merseyside to train with Youth With a Mission (YWAM).  I met my husband there and got married and we both worked for YWAM and for the Church of England for 10 years in a deprived community there. After our daughter was born, Richard recognised that he was being called to get ordained and we went to Bristol for him to train. Our son Joe was born in Bristol, and we moved back to Merseyside for Richard’s curacy after the training. We spent twelve years at Liverpool Cathedral, where my role was supporting my husband in his work in any way, I felt I could: helping lead a new cafe-style congregation, leading sung worship, helping in the work with Iranian refugees, being on the pastoral team, helping to run Alpha, offering Spiritual Direction, making lots of brownies!

However, I became increasingly frustrated in my roles because I felt there had to be more. One day I was praying while walking in a park, bringing this frustration to God, and clearly felt Him telling me to come out of hiding. I realised that I had been hiding behind Richard my husband, who was always happy to be vocal and to take the up-front role! I knew that God was saying that I needed to let my voice be heard. And that has been quite a journey for me over the last few years. I did a degree in Theology and have slowly grown in confidence that I have something to say, eventually realising that God was calling me too to get ordained.

My husband got a job with the York Diocese and so we left Liverpool and I commuted to Durham for my ordination training two days a week. After two years, my husband felt God calling him back to Parish ministry, and we both sensed God calling us to come to Hull. We moved to Hull last June and picked up our Labrador puppy Jed two days later! Richard is now vicar of St John’s Newland, and I have come as curate to the Minster.

If you are interested, my favourite things are having coffee with a friend, walking in the countryside and especially by the beach, singing, music, and reading a good novel. Oh, and of course eating chocolate!  Louise White, curate at Hull Minster

HEATING UPDATE

The new boiler house has been completed and the boiler reinstated. A new gas supply has been commissioned. This is all good news, and we are on track to have a fully heated Minster in time for Easter. The heating will be turned on at the end of March but due to the historic fabric of the building it will take us two weeks to get up to temperature.

PRAYER POINTS FOR THIRD WEEK OF MARCH

• We pray for a peaceful solution to the ongoing tension between Russia/Ukraine.

•  We pray for those, particularly in this city, who are struggling financially, that they will seek help for their problems.

Minster Lifeline 7 2022

It was great to see our doors open once again and meet up with many of the volunteers during this past week. The shop is well stocked and there are some great Easter gifts and cards available. Baptisms are happening most Sundays now and for the foreseeable future and our first wedding takes place at the beginning of April.

I understand that the boiler room is near completion and hopefully by the end of March we will see the heating switches all turn to ‘ON’ once again!

These are all positive signs and when we look outside the spring bulbs are waking up once more and the flowers are about to bloom.

YET we cannot get away from the scenes we see and hear on our radios and TV’s. Day after day the Ukrainian people are suffering unimaginable conditions. We light candles and we pray. To remind us once again here are the words of the prayer written by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York:

A Prayer for Ukraine:

God of peace and justice,

We pray for the people of Ukraine today/

We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons.

We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow,

That your Spirit of comfort would draw near to them.

We have mentioned some of the positives that are happening in and around the Minster and now to add to that our Verger Jon Major has written a piece for us telling us about the great Tower Tours that he leads from the Minster. Jon’s role is that of a volunteer. He prepares the Minster for acts of worship and is there to support the clergy and ministers. If you visit the Minster, you will see that Jon does much more than this and he always has a friendly smile for those around him.

He definitely doesn’t need ‘gym membership’ as he regularly is up and down the tower stairs carrying out the fabulous tours that show Hull in all its glory from such a height! If you haven’t already done so, book now it is well worth it.

JON WRITES:

Now we are heading to that beautiful part of the year called Spring we are once again starting the Tower Tours.

For the last year or so myself and Don Kitchman, one of our bellringers have been taking organised guided tours up the tower and these have proved extremely popular.  These were brought about from the tours that were only open during Heritage Week.

 The tours will take place every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday ,and Saturday at 2pm and are bookable online with a maximum of 15 people per tour.

We start off under the tower with a brief history of the church and how the tower almost collapsed.  We then include a safety brief before climbing the 83 steps to the ringing chamber, this is where Don comes into his own and gives a talk on the bells and his years as a campanologist.  From there we climb another 87 steps to the tower roof to take in the beautiful surroundings of our great City from 150 feet up.  Whilst we are on the roof I run through some interesting facts about Hull and some of the people who carved its history, we then head down to the clock room where Don describes the workings of the largest four-face clock in a church in the country.  We then head back down to ground level.

The tour takes on average 1 hour and 15 minutes and costs £6 per person.

Recently we have been getting 5-star reviews on trip advisor with some wonderful comments on this informative, historical, and sometimes humorous look at this beautiful building and great city that is Kingston-Upon-Hull.

We will also try to accommodate any group bookings outside of the normal tour times.

How things have changed in just one week! We are all saddened by the situation in Ukraine and feel desperation for the people of that country trying to hold on to their independence and keep safe. We know that in Hull there are many people who have relatives and friends in Ukraine and the days ahead will be so difficult.

Archbishop Justin Welby & Archbishop Stephen Cottrell have circulated the following prayer. It was suggested in church yesterday that we put this prayer in a visible place and each day stop what we are doing to speak these words. I think that is a great suggestion as prayer is one way in which we can be involved:

We have been praying for Bishops Alison and Frank over the past weeks and were so pleased to see them in the Minster a couple of Sundays ago. Bishop Frank would like us to include the following:

There is a line in the lovely card presented to me on Sunday 20th February which says: “Today it’s time to turn the page, a new chapter to unfold”.  I could not have known when I slipped in to Holy Trinity soon after my own retirement in October 2016, how much the church and City and the extraordinary people of this area would find a deep and treasured place in my heart.  I had turned the page then and a new chapter unfolded as I moved down from Newcastle, gladly able to live without my weekly commute which had been the feature of the first 18 months after Alison had been consecrated Bishop of Hull.

Hull Minster, as soon we would become, has been gifted by God with a unique mission and ministry – perfectly placed to seek the welfare and pray and act for the prosperity of the people here.  The genius of the Development Project and the opening of the West Doors onto the renewed Trinity Square created a level access not only physically but spiritually for people loved by God and trying to grapple with the tremendous mystery of our human lives and earthly existence.  I could not count the profound conversations or practical acts of assistance which have been shared – nor the brief, seemingly superficial meetings which have turned out to be meaningful and sometimes life-changing, that volunteers and congregational members and staff have had even in the short time I have been at the Minster.  It makes me rejoice in what a fully re-opened and redeveloped Minster will be able to offer as the Trinity Room is completed later this year. And above all as followers of Jesus this is what we are called to: loving God and our neighbour in the particular place in which we have been called.

Thank you for the journey shared, the cards and messages and prayers and the gifts given and received as this chapter closes and a new one opens with the Northumberland countryside rather than the Humber estuary on its title page.  Alison and I are thankful to have the beautiful Minster prayer shawls to wrap around us as, reminded of the Christian journey on which we are all embarked,  we look forward to new adventures in the service of the God who embraces us and the whole world in his love. Thank you all for your companionship and all blessings upon you for the future.

Lent 2022

Lent is the annual 40-day preparation for the great feast of easter marked by prayer, fasting, Bible study and penitence. The season begins on Ash Wednesday, this year the 2nd of March. There will be two services of Holy Communion with the optional traditional imposition of ashes at 12.30 and 7.30pm. During the day ‘ashing’ will be available for anyone visiting the Minster between 12 30 lunch time and 4pm. Ashes made from the previous year’s palm crosses are used to mark a cross with the words “Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return, repent of your sins and be faithful to Christ.”

Minster Lifeline 5 2022

I have just struggled against the wind to hang the washing outside for the first time in many weeks! Although Eunice and Franklin have passed through the country there is so much turmoil and damage left in their path. Rivers flooding the banks, trees that have stood for hundreds of years uprooted and many people seeing their lovely homes destroyed.

Yesterday in our service we heard about the storm that hit the disciples when they were out fishing on the Sea of Galilee. Despite the disciples feeling they had been abandoned by Jesus as he slept in the back of the boat, he was, as always, in control of the situation and it was events like this that led to Peter when asked by Jesus ‘who do you think I am’ that he replied, ‘You are the Christ, the living God’

We are reassured in yesterday’s psalm that God:

‘formed the mountains…..stilled the roaring of the waves and the turmoil of the nation’

With this in mind, we bring to God the turmoil in the world where peace is so delicate and ask for your power to rule and to lead to lasting peace.

 SISTER CATHERINE WRITES FOR US THIS WEEK:

I’m Sister Catherine CHN from the Community of the Holy Name, an Anglican Religious Order.  Our community moved to Hessle from Derby in June 2022, a much-delayed move, that from conception of the idea of moving to actually moving took the best part of five years! 

A little about CHN; The Community of the Holy Name originated in St Peter’s Church in Vauxhall in London in June 1865, when the first sister, Sister Eliza took her vows in St Peters. The little community was then known as St Peters Sisterhood and over the years it grow, especially under the guidance of the Parish priest Father George Herbert and Mother Frances Mary, who between them put the little community on a firm footing.

The community made its first move from London to Malvern in 1879 when it acquired its current title ‘The Community of the Mission Sisters of the Holy Name of Jesus’, usually shortened to Community of the Holy Name. After a hundred years in Malvern, diminishing numbers and buildings that were no longer fit for purpose brought on the next move; onwards to Derby where we stayed for 30 years. Finally, and for much the same reasons we moved again – heading ever in a northerly direction to Hessle.  Our next move will have us living in the Outer Hebrides!

I’m usually asked how I became a sister so here is the condensed version of the story – I became a Christian and was baptised in 1998 following the death of my mum and became involved in lovely St Peters, Radford in Nottingham. CHN had a branch house there at the time and I became acquainted with the sisters. A friend persuaded me to visit the Convent in Derby for a weekend retreat and I was hooked.  I loved going there just to be quiet and take a breather from day to day living. I never, ever thought about joining until I made the mistake of asking God if he had any work, I could do for him. Be incredibly careful what you say to God because He listens!

When at the convent one day, in the quiet of the prayer time before Compline a voice said, very quietly, in an almost conversational tone, “You should become a sister”.   My immediate reaction was, ‘What a stupid idea!’.  However, once lodged, the idea wouldn’t go away and after a couple of years avoiding the question and being continually nudged by God,  I had to try it, and the rest as they say…

The sisters’ prayer life is central to all the community does.  We say a 5-fold Office daily together as well as times of personal prayer and are extremely fortunate to be able to have a Eucharist daily.  Our life is a mixed life in which mission work as well as prayer is an important part of our lives.  Sisters have always worked out of parish churches, joining in with whatever was going on, with each sister finding the work that fits their skills and abilities.

Because I am one of the more active sisters, I looked around for a church community to join in order that the least active sisters could join in with the nearer churches. I always enjoyed being in the centre of cities and so I decided to give the Minster a try and found a place where I could exercise my calling. And here I am!  I will hopefully be able to join in with the work of the Minster and work alongside the wonderful people I have met already. 

We have already made lots of new friends and contacts in Hessle, the deanery and beyond and hope to make many more – thanks to the wonderful people of Hessle and Hull who have made us so welcome.

BIBLE STUDIES are held every Wednesday evening online. Two weeks study on Isaiah 40 and Isaiah 55, before launching the online Lent study ‘The Road to Calvary’.

Lent 2022

Lent is the annual 40-day preparation for the great feast of easter marked by prayer, fasting, Bible study and penitence. The season begins on Ash Wednesday, this year the 2nd of March. There will be two services of Holy Communion with the optional traditional imposition of ashes at 12.30 and 7.30pm. During the day ‘ashing’ will be available for anyone visiting the Minster between 12 30 lunch time and 4pm. Ashes made from the previous year’s palm crosses are used to mark a cross with the words “Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return, repent of your sins and be faithful to Christ.”

LENT COURSES

A way of marking Lent is to spend some extra time studying the scriptures and praying together. This year we are offering two in person Lent courses starting on the 9th of March at 1.30pm and 7.30pm The Room Where it Happened written by Bishop Rose Hudson-Wilkin based on the Musical Hamilton.

The Zoom Bible Study during Lent on Wednesdays at 7.30 will be looking at The Road to Calvary. The Zoom link can be found at hullminster.org/teaching.

PRAYER POINTS FOR FOURTH WEEK OF FEBRUARY

• v  We pray for Freya & Faye Marshall, their parents, and godparents, as Freya and Faye are baptised at the Minster on Sunday.

•   We pray for a peaceful solution to the rising tension between Russia/Ukraine.

• We pray for the families of those who have been killed by Storm Eunice and also that help will quickly be made available to those whose homes and businesses have been affected.

• We pray for the new Lent Studies that God will open our eyes to his word and bring a deeper understanding of the sacrifice that Jesus made on our behalf.
