This week Revd. Irene writes:
It’s good to be back into Minster life after a couple of weeks away enjoying the countryside, coast and autumn colours. It was great to hear from Tim all the exciting things that have been happening at Welcome Café during those couple of weeks. In our last Lifeline you heard about the Active Care Group and their performance of The Wizard of Oz but alongside this there was another new addition to the café, free haircuts for anyone wanting a short back and sides make over. I understand there was quite a queue for this new offering.
Many thanks of course went to the hairdresser:
Then I heard about the following Thursday with great excitement, this is what Tim had to say:
WELCOME CAFE
“Firstly, thank you all for today. It was full on hard work. But it really was appreciated by all those that attended.
Particular thanks to Mike who had prepared a delicious two course lunch. Vegetable lasagne, Jacket potatoes and sticky toffee pudding with custard.
There were 61 servings. Enough for those that asked for seconds. We know that for certain because of Sister Catherine’s brilliant suggestion of raffle tickets.
You couldn’t wish for a better example of putting our Faith in to action.
And I firmly believe it is creating a place where individuals can play their part by helping out. Helping to clear the tables and chairs is a great help. So, thank you all. God bless.”
I should firstly apologise to our friends at St Helen’s Church Welton. For not acknowledging this earlier.
The Clergy and congregation of St Helens have been coming to the Welcome Cafe once a month with a wonderful variety of gifts for those that attend. The gifts range from hand knitted hats and scarfs, baby clothing, pot noodles and toiletries. All of which is very much appreciated. But on their last visit they came with a cheque for £250. A contribution to the running cost of the Welcome Cafe.
The story behind this gift is heart-warming.
Seemingly, two young men went to the Vicarage of St Helen’s and offered the money to the vicar for the work of the church at Welton.
The Vicar told the two guys about the work of Welcome Cafe at Hull Minster and on hearing this they both said yes, please pass it on to the Welcome Cafe.
A wonderful gesture on behalf of the two young men, a wonderful gift from Welton Church.
Those of us that volunteer to maintain the Welcome Cafe are mindful of the cost of what the church freely offer to all those that attend on a Thursday.
It follows that we are so grateful for those that work behind the scenes work, particularly regarding fundraising. One particular person. Who I shall be thanking personally. Tim
BEER FESTIVAL
Had a great day today presenting the certificate to Atom Brewery for the best keg ale in the Hull Minster beer festival 2025. The decision is by public vote over three days.
GIRLS BRIGADE
Wow teamwork makes the dreamwork! Where do I start, my fantastic team were amazing, it was all a bit of challenge getting through the Hull fair traffic and we are so grateful our girls choose to come to us and 1 new one instead of going to fair Thank you. We had challenge Tuesday with less time and lots of crafts to make for our display board, plus practicing our readings for Sunday. The team worked hard behind the scenes helping to prepare each animal for our display board. The girls worked hard making the animals. Imy and Hollie worked hard on preparing our display board and putting it altogether. We still have a bit of work o do to finish it off so watch this space! Everyone worked well and part of team. Well done everyone! It reminds me of 1 Corinthians 12:27 You are the body of Christ. Each one of you is a part of it. Thank you, Lord, for everyone in our team.
With many blessings, Lauren
This Sunday morning at the Informal Service, we saw the girls receiving badges for various awards. They also helped in leading the song Our God is a Great Big God. Below, they were joined by younger members of the family.
The present and hopefully, the next generation, of Girls Brigade
GOLDEN BOOK
Remembrance period is once again fast approaching. Hull Minster is planning an exhibition space for the 3 branches of the cadet forces to show what work they do.
It is also the time when we read the names from the Golden Book. This will start at 1pm on Sunday 9th November. If you wish to read names out please let Jon know, You do not have to stay all afternoon, even if you have 10 minutes to spare to read a few pages of names. The more readers the better.

PRAYERS FOR THE LAST SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY
· We pray for continued peace in Manchester, and other areas, after the issues outside the synagogue.
· We pray for our government that you will give them wisdom in these difficult times.
· We pray for peace throughout the whole of the Middle East and for the Christians who are suffering persecution in many countries.
· We pray especially for Christians in the Indian state of Rajasthan who are facing an increase in attacks just weeks after the state assembly passed a strict anti-conversion law. Under the bill, one of the stipulations is that voluntary conversions require the approval of the local authorities. There have been five attacks since the bill’s passage in September. In one incident, some 20 Christians had gathered for a service when Hindutva extremists barged in, accusing the pastor of forced conversions. When the believers defended him, the extremists verbally abused and physically assaulted the group. Several were hospitalised.
· We pray for the people of Ukraine and Russia and all those who have experienced loss of loved ones that they may know your comfort and peace.
· We pray too for all those throughout the world living in fear and experiencing hunger, Lord may the leaders in all situations have compassion.
· We pray for our city of Hull that we will see help being given to those in dire need.
· We pray for all the children involved in the variety of activities in the Minster. May they have an understanding of your love for them.
· We pray for all who have loved ones who are sick that they may experience your healing. May they know your love and peace.
· Help us all to remember to be grateful for all that you have given for us.
