It was great to see our doors open once again and meet up with many of the volunteers during this past week. The shop is well stocked and there are some great Easter gifts and cards available. Baptisms are happening most Sundays now and for the foreseeable future and our first wedding takes place at the beginning of April.

I understand that the boiler room is near completion and hopefully by the end of March we will see the heating switches all turn to ‘ON’ once again!

These are all positive signs and when we look outside the spring bulbs are waking up once more and the flowers are about to bloom.

YET we cannot get away from the scenes we see and hear on our radios and TV’s. Day after day the Ukrainian people are suffering unimaginable conditions. We light candles and we pray. To remind us once again here are the words of the prayer written by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York:

A Prayer for Ukraine:

God of peace and justice,

We pray for the people of Ukraine today/

We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons.

We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow,

That your Spirit of comfort would draw near to them.

We pray for those with power over war or peace,

For wisdom, discernment and compassion

to guide their decisions.

Above all, we pray for all your precious children, at risk and in

fear, that you would hold and protect them.

We pray in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Amen

We have mentioned some of the positives that are happening in and around the Minster and now to add to that our Verger Jon Major has written a piece for us telling us about the great Tower Tours that he leads from the Minster. Jon’s role is that of a volunteer. He prepares the Minster for acts of worship and is there to support the clergy and ministers. If you visit the Minster, you will see that Jon does much more than this and he always has a friendly smile for those around him.

He definitely doesn’t need ‘gym membership’ as he regularly is up and down the tower stairs carrying out the fabulous tours that show Hull in all its glory from such a height! If you haven’t already done so, book now it is well worth it.

Now we are heading to that beautiful part of the year called Spring we are once again starting the Tower Tours.

For the last year or so myself and Don Kitchman, one of our bellringers have been taking organised guided tours up the tower and these have proved extremely popular. These were brought about from the tours that were only open during Heritage Week.

The tours will take place every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday ,and Saturday at 2pm and are bookable online with a maximum of 15 people per tour.

We start off under the tower with a brief history of the church and how the tower almost collapsed. We then include a safety brief before climbing the 83 steps to the ringing chamber, this is where Don comes into his own and gives a talk on the bells and his years as a campanologist. From there we climb another 87 steps to the tower roof to take in the beautiful surroundings of our great City from 150 feet up. Whilst we are on the roof I run through some interesting facts about Hull and some of the people who carved its history, we then head down to the clock room where Don describes the workings of the largest four-face clock in a church in the country. We then head back down to ground level.

The tour takes on average 1 hour and 15 minutes and costs £6 per person.

Recently we have been getting 5-star reviews on trip advisor with some wonderful comments on this informative, historical, and sometimes humorous look at this beautiful building and great city that is Kingston-Upon-Hull.

We will also try to accommodate any group bookings outside of the normal tour times.

How things have changed in just one week! We are all saddened by the situation in Ukraine and feel desperation for the people of that country trying to hold on to their independence and keep safe. We know that in Hull there are many people who have relatives and friends in Ukraine and the days ahead will be so difficult.

Archbishop Justin Welby & Archbishop Stephen Cottrell have circulated the following prayer. It was suggested in church yesterday that we put this prayer in a visible place and each day stop what we are doing to speak these words. I think that is a great suggestion as prayer is one way in which we can be involved:

We have been praying for Bishops Alison and Frank over the past weeks and were so pleased to see them in the Minster a couple of Sundays ago. Bishop Frank would like us to include the following:

There is a line in the lovely card presented to me on Sunday 20th February which says: “Today it’s time to turn the page, a new chapter to unfold”. I could not have known when I slipped in to Holy Trinity soon after my own retirement in October 2016, how much the church and City and the extraordinary people of this area would find a deep and treasured place in my heart. I had turned the page then and a new chapter unfolded as I moved down from Newcastle, gladly able to live without my weekly commute which had been the feature of the first 18 months after Alison had been consecrated Bishop of Hull.

Hull Minster, as soon we would become, has been gifted by God with a unique mission and ministry – perfectly placed to seek the welfare and pray and act for the prosperity of the people here. The genius of the Development Project and the opening of the West Doors onto the renewed Trinity Square created a level access not only physically but spiritually for people loved by God and trying to grapple with the tremendous mystery of our human lives and earthly existence. I could not count the profound conversations or practical acts of assistance which have been shared – nor the brief, seemingly superficial meetings which have turned out to be meaningful and sometimes life-changing, that volunteers and congregational members and staff have had even in the short time I have been at the Minster. It makes me rejoice in what a fully re-opened and redeveloped Minster will be able to offer as the Trinity Room is completed later this year. And above all as followers of Jesus this is what we are called to: loving God and our neighbour in the particular place in which we have been called.

Thank you for the journey shared, the cards and messages and prayers and the gifts given and received as this chapter closes and a new one opens with the Northumberland countryside rather than the Humber estuary on its title page. Alison and I are thankful to have the beautiful Minster prayer shawls to wrap around us as, reminded of the Christian journey on which we are all embarked, we look forward to new adventures in the service of the God who embraces us and the whole world in his love. Thank you all for your companionship and all blessings upon you for the future.

Lent 2022

Lent is the annual 40-day preparation for the great feast of easter marked by prayer, fasting, Bible study and penitence. The season begins on Ash Wednesday, this year the 2nd of March. There will be two services of Holy Communion with the optional traditional imposition of ashes at 12.30 and 7.30pm. During the day ‘ashing’ will be available for anyone visiting the Minster between 12 30 lunch time and 4pm. Ashes made from the previous year’s palm crosses are used to mark a cross with the words “Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return, repent of your sins and be faithful to Christ.”

I have just struggled against the wind to hang the washing outside for the first time in many weeks! Although Eunice and Franklin have passed through the country there is so much turmoil and damage left in their path. Rivers flooding the banks, trees that have stood for hundreds of years uprooted and many people seeing their lovely homes destroyed.

Yesterday in our service we heard about the storm that hit the disciples when they were out fishing on the Sea of Galilee. Despite the disciples feeling they had been abandoned by Jesus as he slept in the back of the boat, he was, as always, in control of the situation and it was events like this that led to Peter when asked by Jesus ‘who do you think I am’ that he replied, ‘You are the Christ, the living God’

We are reassured in yesterday’s psalm that God:

‘formed the mountains…..stilled the roaring of the waves and the turmoil of the nation’

With this in mind, we bring to God the turmoil in the world where peace is so delicate and ask for your power to rule and to lead to lasting peace.

SISTER CATHERINE WRITES FOR US THIS WEEK:

I’m Sister Catherine CHN from the Community of the Holy Name, an Anglican Religious Order. Our community moved to Hessle from Derby in June 2022, a much-delayed move, that from conception of the idea of moving to actually moving took the best part of five years!

A little about CHN; The Community of the Holy Name originated in St Peter’s Church in Vauxhall in London in June 1865, when the first sister, Sister Eliza took her vows in St Peters. The little community was then known as St Peters Sisterhood and over the years it grow, especially under the guidance of the Parish priest Father George Herbert and Mother Frances Mary, who between them put the little community on a firm footing.

The community made its first move from London to Malvern in 1879 when it acquired its current title ‘The Community of the Mission Sisters of the Holy Name of Jesus’, usually shortened to Community of the Holy Name. After a hundred years in Malvern, diminishing numbers and buildings that were no longer fit for purpose brought on the next move; onwards to Derby where we stayed for 30 years. Finally, and for much the same reasons we moved again – heading ever in a northerly direction to Hessle. Our next move will have us living in the Outer Hebrides!

I’m usually asked how I became a sister so here is the condensed version of the story – I became a Christian and was baptised in 1998 following the death of my mum and became involved in lovely St Peters, Radford in Nottingham. CHN had a branch house there at the time and I became acquainted with the sisters. A friend persuaded me to visit the Convent in Derby for a weekend retreat and I was hooked. I loved going there just to be quiet and take a breather from day to day living. I never, ever thought about joining until I made the mistake of asking God if he had any work, I could do for him. Be incredibly careful what you say to God because He listens!

When at the convent one day, in the quiet of the prayer time before Compline a voice said, very quietly, in an almost conversational tone, “You should become a sister”. My immediate reaction was, ‘What a stupid idea!’. However, once lodged, the idea wouldn’t go away and after a couple of years avoiding the question and being continually nudged by God, I had to try it, and the rest as they say…

The sisters’ prayer life is central to all the community does. We say a 5-fold Office daily together as well as times of personal prayer and are extremely fortunate to be able to have a Eucharist daily. Our life is a mixed life in which mission work as well as prayer is an important part of our lives. Sisters have always worked out of parish churches, joining in with whatever was going on, with each sister finding the work that fits their skills and abilities.

Because I am one of the more active sisters, I looked around for a church community to join in order that the least active sisters could join in with the nearer churches. I always enjoyed being in the centre of cities and so I decided to give the Minster a try and found a place where I could exercise my calling. And here I am! I will hopefully be able to join in with the work of the Minster and work alongside the wonderful people I have met already.

We have already made lots of new friends and contacts in Hessle, the deanery and beyond and hope to make many more – thanks to the wonderful people of Hessle and Hull who have made us so welcome.

It was great this last week to have the Minster doors open on Wednesday and Thursday mornings for our Grief Awareness Café and Integration Coffee Morning. As soon as the doors opened so many people came into the Minster just to look around the building, soak up the atmosphere and sometimes light a candle for their loved ones. Unfortunately, we are not able to open on a regular basis this month as the Minster has no heating and it would be wrong to expect our wonderful volunteers to stand in the cold throughout the day. We will keep you update here in Lifeline on our plans for March. We are of course open for worship on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and Monthly Praise so we hope to see you then.

As I am writing this Lifeline on Valentine’s Day, I thought I would share with you my Pause for Thought which went out on Radio Humberside this morning at 6 40 a.m.!!

I am sure that some would no doubt be up and around at that time however for the majority (this includes me) 6:40 a.m. is not a time we are familiar with so here it is:

I wonder how many listeners are familiar with the song Please Mr Postman – The opening lines are Please Mr Postman look and see if there’s a letter in your bag for me .

This song was a hit firstly for the Marvelletes and covered by other groups including, in the seventies, the Carpenters.

Today people will be looking to see if there’s a card for them as we celebrate St. Valentine’s Day.

There are a number of stories around St Valentine, a priest in Rome during the 3rd century. One particular one was that when he was imprisoned for spreading the Christian faith, he performed a miracle and restored the sight to the jailor’s daughter, the story goes on to say just before he went for execution, he wrote a letter to the girl and signed ‘your valentine’ hence the tradition continues.

Although our shops have been full of reminders of Valentine’s day promoting it as a time to show love to someone who may be special however that message goes much further than just receiving a card on one specific day. The Bible says love God and love thy neighbour, now whether you have faith or no faith there’s a message there that everyone can take on board.

Sometimes it is really hard to love our neighbour when I share God’s blessing in church I always ask for his blessing to be not only on those present but on those we love and those we struggle to love that is the challenge but today as we celebrate St. Valentine it may be the time to do just that, to smile, pass the time of day or even pick up the phone and offer a helping hand to someone we struggle to love.

It is good to be able to keep in touch again through our Lifeline. This will now be available every week. January seems to have passed quickly and we have survived not having the heating in the Minster, thank you for bearing with us! This is not an ideal situation however everyone is working very hard to get the new boiler fitted and working as soon as possible.

February is again a quiet month however we are holding two Coffee Mornings one is the continuation of the ‘Grief Awareness Café’, the other is a new venture linked with Hull Help for Refugees. The grief café is on Wednesday 9th February so if you or anyone you know would like to come and meet others in a similar situation, have a hot drink and biscuits you are very welcome 10:30 – 12noon.

The Integration coffee morning is to welcome anyone who has come to the country and would like to integrate with others. An ideal opportunity to practise language skills and to build up friendships. Please do support this venture which will be held on Thursday 10th February at 10:30 – 12noon.

Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

Rev. Rob and family have now moved to Hull. Rob tells us a little of his first month in his new role

One of the most exciting, but also one of the most difficult things about being an ordained minister in the Church of England, is being called by God to a different place.

By now, I am well used to moving house. In the six years that I have been ordained, I have moved house five times(!). I lived in two rented properties during my curacy. In both cases the landlords decided to sell up before I had finished. So, whilst moving house is never pleasant, by now our family is well used to it. Our house move from Brayton to Hull for the most part ran quite smoothly.

But now that we have moved and are beginning to settle, the reality of following God’s call has begun to set in. For now, we experience the loss of moving from our previous home, a house that we had made our own, relationships that we have treasured, a ministry that had taken shape.

In following God’s call, my family, like all of us on the Christian journey, are following the great tradition in the Bible of God calling people into new things. Sometimes that means moving house and job, sometimes it means taking a different direction in life, as God guides us. All of us are pilgrims, a journeying people, followers of Jesus Christ who leads us forward always as we are ‘being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory’ (2 Cor. 3.18). As we journey onwards, we uncover more and more of the riches of his grace, and the unfolding of God’s will.

In moving to Hull and taking up the post of Associate Vicar at Hull Minster, I have so far experienced the kindness and welcome of a gifted and committed staff team who are a joy to work with, and worshipping community who are friendly, peaceful, generous, and kind. I have also really enjoyed beginning to get to know the people of Hull. Meeting people at the Christmas markets in the Minster and at some of the Christmas services was a highlight for me when I first arrived. It is a privilege to be here. I look forward to witnessing how God’s riches unfold in the months and years to come at Hull Minster.

BISHOP ALISON’S FAREWELL SERVICE

There will be a special service at 4 p.m. on Saturday 5th February as we say ‘farewell’ to Bishop Alison. If you would like to attend, please book a place on the Hull Minster website or if you are not able to access the website ask a member of the team to do this for you. Places are limited. During the service we will give thanks for all that Bishop Alison has done during her time in Hull and will pray for her and Bishop Frank as they begin a new chapter in their lives.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE

Despite what seem like never-ending restrictions, I hope that you were able to celebrate Christmas in whatever way was best for you. I certainly missed the freedom of being at all the Christmas services but was thankful that there was no largescale lockdown again.

As the new year begins it is with a heavy heart that we remember all those who are struggling to keep businesses afloat, those whose families are affected, and trust that there will be help on hand to support them both financially and emotionally in the coming months.

I received a gift from a friend which had verse 14 of psalm 48 written in the front and I think it is a great reminder that each day:

‘God is our God for ever and ever;
he will be our guide even to the end.’

As we move into the new year at the Minster, we have much to celebrate but also frustrations as the temporary heating system is removed. This, of course, will put many things on hold until the spring arrives. I have to keep reminding myself of the above verse and trust God in all things.

One thing we can do, whether the Minster doors are open or closed, is pray. Maybe we can set aside a few minutes each day to pray for God’s work in the Minster as we look forward to seeing everyone in action again welcoming the people from Hull and much further afield to share God’s love in many different ways.

Every decision we make has consequences. Those we can foresee are for the most part short-term. In the long term, even small actions may have long term consequences. The Pandemic has shown us all too clearly how we are all connected. Small decisions each of us make can have consequences, intended or not, for other people. It has been hard for us these last two years to live under restrictions to our individual freedoms. In a society which has exalted the individual ‘I’ so highly over the ‘we’ our interconnectedness and mutual vulnerability has come as a shock. We have had to learn to consider our actions more carefully than we have been used to in a hedonistic, me first, society. In his final book, Morality, published posthumously after his death in November 2020 the former Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks re-tells and old Jewish joke.

An old Jewish man and a young Jewish man are travelling on the train. The young man asks: ‘Excuse me, what time is it?’ The old man says nothing. ‘Excuse me Sir what time is it?’ Again, the old man stays silent. ‘Sir I'm asking what time it is why don't you answer?’ The old man says: ‘young man the next stop is the last on this route, I don't know you so you must be a stranger if. I answer you now there will be a relationship between us. I will have to invite you to my home. You are handsome, and I have a beautiful daughter. You will both fall in love, and you will want to get married. So, tell me, why should I want a son in law who can't even afford a watch?’

We are in a period of history globally, nationally and as a church when we are in a state of flux, a Kairos moment where what we do for good or ill will have long term consequences. This coming year we will need to pay attention to our moral compass and the winds of the Spirit more than ever to know when to be bold and when to exercise restraint. When people are tired and worn down it becomes harder to make good balanced decisions, we need to keep our bearings all the more.

As we move to Christmas Day there is something very special about the above words. These words were spoken thousands of years before the birth of Jesus. This was not a whirlwind plan of God’s but a perfect one that had been conceived from the foundation of the world. There were seven hundred years between this prophecy of Isaiah and the birth of Jesus. For these words to come true two thousand years ago shows God is constantly working his purpose out. We may not always understand, but we know that all he does, he does for us.

Have a good Christmas, keep safe and we look forward to seeing you soon.

We are two thirds of the way towards achieving the amount needed to keep the Minster heated through the winter months. However, it is an all or nothing situation in that we must have the money available before we take the decision to keep on heating the Minster. You don’t need any previous experience to volunteer, just a commitment to a couple of hours a week on Thursday mornings and a heart for making a difference to a young person.

REV. IRENE WRITES:

This picture is part of a group of children visiting the Minster from one of the Hull schools. What a delight to share our lovely building with them and above all, to retell the Christmas story to eager young ears.

Adelaide Street school, which is in our parish is holding two Christingle services later this week and Rev. Rob is going in to meet with the staff and children to tell them about the Christingle.

We are delighted that Rob is part of the Ministry Team and look forward to getting to know him, his wife Hannah and their little boy, Reuben. Rob will be spending a great deal of his time in the Minster so do look out for him and make him welcome.

Last Friday I did Pause for Thought with Radio Humberside. As it goes on air at 6 40 in the morning, I thought I would share it in the Lifeline as I am sure that many of you, like me, will not be up and about at such a time!

RADIO HUMBERSIDE PAUSE FOR THOUGHT 3RD DECEMBER 2020

As the month of November drew to a close, the bed in the spare room of my home was piled high with Christmas gifts yet to be wrapped. My dining table was strewn with Christmas cards yet to be written, and as for my study, well there’s a lot to prepare for at Christmas.

Then I looked outside my window beyond all my busyness, and saw a garden that was resting, sleeping, the leaves having fallen from the branches, the summer flowers all dead apart from the occasional fuchsia hanging on to those final frost-free days. A relief too, that the grass no longer is in need of the twice a week cutting.

I thought how clever nature is knowing that to produce its best, it needs a time to rest. Very soon under the soil new shoots will be forming and the spring daffodils will cover our hedges with their yellow bloom. As they disappear summer draws near with all its glory only to disappear once more, and rest time begins again.

There is a message for me here and perhaps, for some listeners too. We also need a time to rest and take stock of things so that in our fruitful times we produce the best.

In the Christian calendar Advent and Lent have got to be those times when we evaluate, we pray, and we prepare. Advent began as November drew to a close, not the time to be over-busy with no time to spare, but the time to slow down, prepare ourselves to once again, thank God for the precious gift of his Son our Saviour Jesus Christ.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE

Largely due to the success of the vaccination programme, hospitalisations and deaths remain at a much lower level than at similar points during the pandemic. However, the continuation of this will be dependent on a good uptake of booster vaccinations. We encourage everyone to be vaccinated, to keep washing their hands clean, to respect social distancing, and use face-coverings when distancing is not possible. Lastly if you or someone in your family has symptoms, please stay away until you have tested.

SUNDAY 12th December

During the Eucharist service Bishop Alison will be confirming five candidates: Christopher Fear, Tony Boynton, Anne-Marie Boynton, David Benn and Imad Abdul Satar. Please pray for these people as they grow in their journey of faith.

At 2 p.m. 12th December there is a candle lighting service. This service is for those who have been bereaved through the loss of a child.

MONDAY 13th December

Shoppers’ Carols Take a break from the Christmas shopping and join us at the Minster at 12 30 for readings and carols. This is the 75th Shoppers’ Carol service to be held at the Minster so let’s keep the tradition strong. Service followed by refreshments.

I have just broken off writing Christmas cards to prepare this weeks Lifeline. I know that once December starts church life becomes very hectic, yet at the same time it is Advent, and it is important that we make changes to our daily routine giving time to prayer and readings. I personally do enjoy Compline and throughout Advent I will make a point of saying compline every evening instead of only ‘sometimes’.

There are, of course lots of prayers and material online so I hope that you can find something that helps you to escape the busyness of the season and give time over to God as we prepare to welcome our Saviour Jesus Christ.

I am very grateful to have been asked to write this article for Minster Lifeline.

First, who am I? Well, like many over the past two years, life has changed a great deal: until recently I was Subdean of Lincoln Cathedral, Canon Pastor and responsible for its fabric and had oversight of the £16m Lincoln Cathedral Connected Project. During my ten years at the cathedral, I worked with a colleague, Dr Anne Irving, who was the Cathedral’s Fund-Raising Officer and then Connected Programme Manager. Recently, we chose to leave the cathedral, set up our own Heritage Consultancy Business, and use our knowledge and expertise helping churches and other heritage organisations. One such church is Hull Minster.

So, it could be said that we’re the hired hands! Being a hired hand is not always a form of praise, not least in some readings of scripture. Take John 10 as a starter:

The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep (John 10.13).

The hired help in the Parable of the Wicked Tenants (the clue is in the title!) remove the owner’s agents, including his son whom they murder (Matthew 21.33-46); and in the parable of The Labourers in the Vineyard (Matthew 20.1-16) all the hired hands do is take the money and grumble. Oh dear, consultants do not come out well in the parables!

However, I’d like to think that that is not the whole story. In the parables, and elsewhere, Jesus employs - to great effect - Jewish Hyperbole, exaggeration if you like, to make his point. These are caricatures not accurate characterisations. So, it’s worth remembering that alongside these stories the main thrust of the Gospel Message is that we all have a role to play in bringing in God’s Kingdom. Looking at past contributions to this series of articles, it’s clear that so many people have helped, or been helped, by Hull Minster over the years, not least during these last difficult months. Some have been part of the Minster’s life for many years, others for a much shorter period, but all have had a role, and played a part in the ongoing life and ministry of this great parish church.

Coming from the “outside” has the advantage that you can bring a different perspective and, as I know all too well, that when you’re in the midst of something it’s difficult, if not impossible, to see what is being achieved. Indeed, it’s all too easy to be overly self-critical, wishing that more could be done, and conscious of what is not being done. As the Prayer Book confession says, “We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us.”

But what has been immediately striking is the sheer amount and variety of healthy, and life-giving events and activities are taking place within Hull Minster. Along with the daily round of worship there is much to enjoy and be celebrated. On our first visit to we were greeted warmly and welcomed (thank you, Revd. Irene!) at the beautiful west entrance and (even at a time when lockdown was only gently easing) there was a buzz of activity and accompanying excitement within the nave. Since that first visit there has usually been something going on: The Gaia Event, Beer Festival, lectures, open days, Tower Tours, History Tours, Exhibitions, and Cultural Events. Now there are Advent Services, preparations for Christmas continue apace and the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Tree Festival is about to commence! These events enhanced, enriched, and made possible by faithful clergy, capable lay leadership, and, not forgetting, the marvellous choir and musical life of the Minster.

Behind the scenes you soon begin to realise that the work continues apace: from pastoral support to fund raising; financial management to arranging events; from managing significant building contracts to day-to day maintenance of the building; from PCC Planning Days to social engagement; and from working with the local community to planning diocesan services and activities. Again, the list can go on and on. Hull Minster is a busy place, achieving much!

A great deal of what is achieved falls, perhaps inevitably, on the shoulders of a few, ably assisted by volunteers, friends, and people of goodwill all motivated by the desire that Hull Minster should be a thriving church, Kingdom Building, and moving into God’s future.

We are now in the season of Advent, a time of waiting, of anticipation and excitement as we expect the birth of the Babe of Bethlehem, Emmanuel, God in the here and now. We prepare ourselves for Christ’s coming amongst us; and by word and deed we also walk alongside others, preparing together, to celebrate the Incarnation, the wonder of God’s coming into the world in the person of Jesus Christ. In that we all have a role to play, even the hired hands!

LICENSING OF NEW ASSOCIATE VICAR

Everyone is very welcome to come along this Wednesday at 7pm for the welcoming of the Revd Robert SueKarran as Associate Vicar. Unfortunately, due to delays in work on their house Rob, Hannah and their son Ruben will not be moving to Hull until January. Rob will have particular responsibility for Mission, volunteers, and visitors to the Minster. We very much look forward to welcoming Rob and his family to the team. Rob's usual day off will be Monday. I am told there is cake!

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE

SUNDAY 12th December

There will be 5 candidates being confirmed during the morning Eucharist. We are delighted that Bishop Alison will be joining us.

At 2 p.m. 12th December there is a candle lighting service. This service is for those who have been bereaved through the loss of a child.

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL in aid of the Lord Mayor’s charities will be held in Hull Minster from the 1st to the 11th December.

REV. IRENE WRITES:

If you have been out and about at dusk, you no doubt will have seen the beautiful sunsets. The deep gold and red colours as the sun sinks each day ready to rise again just a few hours later.

I have just heard that some form of agreement has been signed at COP26, maybe not a great breakthrough, however a start which will hopefully lead to greater things so that many generations to come can still look on those great sunsets and give thanks for the earth and all its glory.

Psalm 65:8 says

The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders;
where morning dawns, where evening fades,
you call forth songs of joy.

BABY NEWS Lauren and Mark Jeffries are now proud parents of Aurora Carol Jean, born two weeks ago weighing 7lbs 1 oz.

MIDWIFE TO MUM We are delighted that Dan and Becky Broom are expecting their first baby in the spring of ‘22

Please pray for Lauren, Mark, Becky, and Dan that parenthood may be a treasured time for them.

On Wednesday last week I was asked by Rev. Irene to help with refreshments at the Grief Awareness Café she and Kim were organising. I loved the concept and, as anyone who has met me knows, I never say no to helping if Rev. Irene asks.

So, I pitched up at 9.30am to find the nave filled with tables decorated with flowers. Heather and three of her Mustard Seed friends were there and had set up some thoughtful stations including a Thank You space, a tear drop collector (a glass jar and glass spheres you could drop in) and a candle prayer table. The fourth area resonated most deeply with me, it was a chair representing the empty chair left by your loved one, and heart shaped decorations were available to tie on to the chair on which you could write their name.

Just before 10am Rev. Irene led us in prayer and asked us to be listeners to those who joined us.

We opened the doors and waited to see who came.

Carole manned the coffee and tea station, and I was on cake and biscuits.

Within a short time, there were people at every table chatting to Kim, Rev. Irene and the Mustard Seed team.

From my station behind a huge selection of cake I saw tears, smiles, pictures being shared on phones and conversations. It seemed to me that sharing the memories of lost friends and family was really helping those who came.

For the next two hours I could see more and more candles flickering, notes appearing on the thank you notice board and heart shapes appearing on the empty chair.

Sadly, just before I left home to come to Minster, I had received news that a former colleague and friend had died a couple of days earlier, and at the end of the event as I put cups and plates in the dishwasher, I felt that this had been such a positive time in which I felt I could pray for him and all those we have lost.

I can’t wait for the next time we can make time for coffee and a chat with those who are missing their loved ones.

We are live streaming our 10:30 service of Holy Communion however this is only available on Facebook at the present time. Please do let us know your thoughts by contacting Rev. CHURCH HEATING

We are currently renting a temporary boiler to heat the Minster during December at a cost of £825 per week plus fuel oil. The boiler is due to be removed at the end of December after the Christmas celebrations. The new boiler room should be complete at the beginning of March. We have a choice, if we want some warmth on a Sunday morning during January and February, we need everyone to give at least an extra £10 per week to take off the chill during services and protect the building from potential frost damage.

GOLDEN BOOK

David and Julia Allum would like to thank all of those who participated in reading almost 2800 names from the Golden Book on Remembrance Sunday afternoon. These names are just some of the servicemen who died in WW1. Many other names are not included in the Book.

RADIO 3 – SUNDAY 21ST NOVEMBER AT 7:45 AM
