Olga and others frequently come into the Minster and offer their help as volunteers. At the present time at some of our drop in events, where all refreshments are free, we have a collection box to help fund the monthly lorry that goes to Ukraine. This was free transport at one point but now has to be paid for by the kg.

For your diary, there is a Ukrainian concert being held in the Minster on Saturday 24th February.   Perhaps you can support by attending this event. I know there is a Ukrainian pianist as part of the programme – will let you know more when I know more.

They heard how, despite not eating or drinking for all this time, he was able to resist the temptations Satan brought before him. After these forty days, which we now call LENT, he went out of the desert to begin his ministry.

Giving for the Gospel 2024

This week we are launching ‘Giving for the Gospel’- a period of four weeks during Lent when we are all being asked to prayerfully consider our giving to the mission and ministry of Hull Minster.

The first thing to say THANK YOU – thank you to each person that gives, without our giving we could not keep Hull Minster open and do all that we do in the Minster, local community, schools, and the city. It costs around £1,000 a day to run the Minster, and every penny is raised locally through our giving, grants, the café, shop, and events.

We’ve chosen Lent, for ‘Giving for Gospel’ because it is the period set aside in preparation for Easter when we are all invited to reflect on our faith. We might observe this through fasting each week or from particular foods and setting time aside for prayer.  The purpose is to consider where we are in our walk with God and to intentionally go deeper in that walk. 

Giving is part of our discipleship, Jesus talked about where your money is, there your heart will be.

‘Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.’ Matthew 6.19-21

So, Lent also provides an invitation for us to consider our giving. We have an information pack for everyone who worships regularly here at Hull Minster, which explains more about our finances and how you can give regularly. If you already give, then we are simply asking you to prayerfully consider your giving.  If you haven’t picked a pack up already, please do so at the end of the service.

‘Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not regretfully or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.’ 2 Corinthians 9.7

Members of the Finance and Fundraising working group will be around each Sunday to give out packs and answer your questions. Each pack contains a response form, and we ask you to complete and return this on or before March 17th when we will be giving thanks for all the gifts.   Dominic Black

I wonder whether you have managed to visit the FISH exhibition, presently displayed down the north side of the Minster. Included in it are several pieces of work done by local primary schools. These pictures are all relating to the loss of the trawler Gaul, with all hands on board, fifty years ago February 1974 in seas north of Norway.

The paintings and collages are done with such taste – just a few pictured below.

On Sunday, a service was held in the Minster to commemorate the anniversary of the loss of the Gaul The Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding, Mr Jim Dick and the Bishop of Hull, Rt Revd Dr Eleanor Sanderson were joined by many relatives of those that had been lost at sea.

A very poignant service with many involved, not least a terrific piece of music ‘Anchor for the soul’ by City of Hull Band. This wonderful piece of music built to a crescendo bringing home the drama faced by sailors past and present on our stormy seas.

This was followed by the naming of all those lost on the Gaul with an act of remembrance and two-minute silence following the tolling of the ship’s bell.

PRIMARY JUNIOR CHURCH

In preparation for the service in the afternoon remembering the Gaul tragedy the children in Primary Junior Church studied the Anthem they were going to sing, (They that go down to the sea in ships by Sumsion from Psalm 107).  They listened to the music and talked about how it reflected the beautiful words. God not only brought the storm but when the sailors cried out to Him for help He commanded the storm to calm.  They learned how the safe haven at the end of the anthem could either be the harbour or heaven. They remembered the lesson from last week when we learned about the disciples of Jesus and how four of them were fishermen too.

 On Friday evening last week Ian and I went to a Fleetwood Mac tribute band at Hull City Hall. Great event! Music plays such an important part in all of our lives whether it be music in worship at the Minster, music concerts on Saturday lunchtimes and in the evenings or music on our radios and TV’s.

Music is a great source for bringing people together. It speaks to all when words can fail and wherever you go in the world. Music is known to improve health and wellbeing. It can improve confidence and resilience. Learning a musical instrument or singing in a group or choir provides a platform for people to achieve through discipline and perseverance. Being part of an ensemble helps develop leadership skills and the ability to work in a team.

Music provides an opportunity for people from all social and cultural backgrounds to express themselves. Listening to Radio 4 on Sunday morning I was impressed with the BBC Appeal ‘In place of war’ the story of a young man faced with the decision - does he follow the wrong path with many of his peers, down the road of drugs and law breaking or does he turn the other way and use music as an alternative. The young man chose the way of music and now runs a community music project with young people helping them also to make the right decision.

Yes, music can change lives!

OUR CHURCH CRAFTERS AND KNITTERS

The crafters (Becky and Glynis), worked hard over Christmas on their stall to raise funds towards a new defibrillator for the church.  They made over £400 – a fantastic amount considering they are the only two crafters involved.

Becy and Glynis would love others to come on board.  This could be replenishing their supply of hats and gloves which sold extremely well or helping in other ways.  They will be meeting in the Minter on Wednesday afternoon 14th February, to chat about the future, so PLEASE do go along and see if even more goods can be made for future sales.

SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE FOR THE SINKING OF THE ‘GAUL’

Hull Minster will be hosting the Civic service to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the trawler Gaul.

There will be four days of events and talks around the City starting on the 8th February culminating in the service at Hull Minster on the 11th at 2pm.

Everyone is welcome to attend and please keep the fishing community and families of those who perished in your prayers.

“The fishing vessel Gaul was a deep sea factory trawler based at Hull. She was launched in December 1971 by Brooke Marine of Lowestoft, entering service during 1972 with the Ranger Fishing company, where she was registered at North Shields as Ranger Castor, SN18. She was renamed when Ranger Fishing was bought by British United Trawlers and re-registered at Hull as Gaul, H243.  She sank some time on the night of 8-9 February 1974 in storm conditions in the Barents Sea, north of Norway. No distress signal was received, and her loss was not realised until 10 February after she twice failed to report in. An extensive search operation was launched but no trace of the ship was found, apart from a lifebuoy recovered three months later. All thirty-six crew were lost. The president of the British Trawler Federation described the loss of the Gaul as "the worst ever single-trawler tragedy".  The wreck was finally located in 1997.

“Gaul sailed from Hull on the morning of 22 January 1974. Mate George Petty became ill and was put ashore at Lødingen on the 26th. Maurice Spurgeon joined the crew on the 28th at Tromsø and Gaul arrived at the fishing grounds off the north coast of Norway the following day. On 8th February, the sea state became severe. Reports from the skippers of other trawlers in the area give the wave height at between 6.5 and 9m, wind between 7 and 10 on the Beaufort scale.

At 09:30 Gaul reported to British United Trawlers that she was "laid and dodging off the North Cape Bank". At 10:30, as was company policy, she reported to the Orsino on the "Skipper's Freezer Schedule" - a summary of position, weather conditions, catch etcetera. A further report was due at 16:30 but Gaul, alone of the 17 British United Trawlers ships in the area at the time, failed to report.

By the afternoon of 10 February British United Trawlers had alerted their insurance company, UK Trawlers Mutual that Gaul had failed to report for two days. On the following morning, the insurance company sent out a message to all the trawlers they insured reading:

To all vessels fishing North Bank, Norway – all vessels please report any contact with the GAUL last reported fishing North Bank. Nil reports not required.

The aircraft carrier HMS Hermes was in the area and was ordered to commence searching. The search involved four other British ships, three Norwegian ships and nineteen trawlers, coordinated by the Hermes. No evidence of the missing Gaul was found, and the search was called off on the afternoon of the 15th February.”

YOUTH ORGANISATION SERVICE

Hull Minster played host to His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant youth organisation service on Sunday.

We had just under two hundred in the congregation, including one hundred and eleven youngsters.  The Service was superb, and Revd. Rob Suekarran played a blinder of a sermon involving all the cadets to much hilarity.

There were many youth units attended including our very own Girl’s Brigade.

As Val and I put together this week’s Lifeline, I noticed that our Collect and Readings ae for he Second Sunday before Lent – I wondered how we had got to this point so quickly!!

The gardens and hedgerows confirm this as this, as the spring flowers begin to poke through the earth yet again.  I am delighted to see the snowdrops out, the aconites and daffodils fighting hard to appear again making yet another beautiful show of colour.

Seven more weeks before Spring arrives but the daylight hours are getting longer, and things are heading in the right direction.

Despite this being the winter term, there seems to be lots happening in the Minster at the moment.  The Wednesday evening courses have all started giving a choice of Online Alpha, Living in Love and Faith, Prayer Course and Zoom Bible Study.  It is not too late to come along to one or more of these, just speak to a member of the clergy team and they will help you make the right decision.

In our busyness at church it is always good to put aside some time for studying, reflecting, and praying.

The Psalmist says: Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10

One of the hardest pats of living in our culture today is the busyness that consumes our lives.  WE often feel like we are constantly being pulled in so many directions.  But God knows exactly what our hearts and spirits need.  He know that we need to take time to breathe and just be still with Him, allowing ourselves to remember and acknowledge that He is God.

One of the greatest rewards from having a regular quiet time with God brings, is that it enables God to speak into our lives in the ways which we desperately need to hear him.

OUR CHURCH CRAFTERS AND KNITTERS

The crafters (Becky and Glynis), worked hard over Christmas on their stall to raise funds towards a new defibrillator for the church.  They made over £400 – a fantastic amount considering they are the only two crafters involved.

Becy and Glynis would love others to come on board.  This could be replenishing their supply of hats and gloves which sold extremely well or helping in other ways.  They will be meeting in the Minter on Wednesday afternoon 14th February, to chat about the future, so PLEASE do go along and see if even more goods can be made for future sales.

Life is all about CHOICES.  I don’t know if you’re like me when watching the news or programmes about people, but one thing stands out: that everyone has made a choice to do or say something in relation to the issue.  Research suggests that the average adult makes about 35,000 remotely conscious decisions every day!  Each decision carries consequences with it that are both good and bad.

Less than two weeks ago, someone decided to try, at some speed, to get through a gap between the kerb and my car – NO GAP!  An unbelievably bad choice, in my opinion.

It set me to thinking about what directs our choices.  As a former history teacher, it is fascinating to look back at the reasons for important historical decisions.  Henry VIII broke away from the Church of Rome and set up the Church of England because the Pope refused him a divorce.  Britain entered into war with Germany in 1939 because we had promised Poland our support in the event of a German invasion, not considered likely.  Many similar decisions have been made over the centuries because individuals or nations had not thought the ideas through or because they were based on wrong assumptions.

Back in the Old Testament when the Children of Israel were about to enter the Promised Land, Joshua their leader, challenged them:

“Choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River (Jordan), or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15)

You might not think to pray about decisions you are going to make but asking God into the situation can make all the difference.  I trust that you will choose to serve God and always pray for his help when making your choices.  If you want to know more about this, ask one of the clergy to chat with you.  Val Fotherby

MUSTARD SEED

Most people will know Heather as Dominic’s wife, but maybe not everyone knows that she works full time for the Diocese of York, leading the Mustard Seed programme - ‘Growing disciples in places where life is tough.’ Every week at Hull Minster Heather leads a learning community of lay people from across the churches in Hull called Stepping Up. It is a year-long journey of growing deeper in faith and exploring how to develop mission in the local community.

Stepping Up also happens in Middlesbrough and our coastal towns, with ninety-nine people on the journey so far, and sixty people who have completed the year. You can find out more about who they are and how they are serving in mission on the website here www.mseed.org

THE ELEMENTS
It was cold, Christmas was over, the light was slowly coming back after the winter solstice, people needed something to cheer them up, something to come out for as a family and have an evening with friends again. 

It was so good to see the Minster full of light and life after the Christmas break to experience the ‘The Elements’ a new spectacular immersive sound and light show by Luxmuralis.  The installation intertwined different world cultures, religious and mythological expressions of Earth, Air, Fire and Water, the classical attributes of our world as represented throughout art history in many ways worldwide.

Shows and events like this are expensive to put on, in this case around £27k. But they bring in many hundreds of people into our magnificent building and can make vital money to sustain the costs of running it in a way that we are able to be open six days a week. 

We are only able to do this because of the tremendous generosity of the tremendous team of people who are willing to donate their time, often late into the evening, to allow us to keep the doors open and host so many amazing events and concerts. Thank You!

A new year has arrived in which we as a world are facing so many challenges. Conflict around the world hasn’t disappeared and the constant reminder of climate change is never far away.

Many of us will have made resolutions to do our ‘bit’ to save the planet or to help wherever we can to bring some comfort to all those suffering in war areas.

In our Morning prayer readings we have been looking at Genesis – the creation story and the power that God gave to humans. We are part of God’s work to heal the earth.

Below is a short extract from a reflection by Peter Graystone:

It once seemed that sea otters had been hunted to extinction for their pelts until a tiny colony was found in Alaska and helped, cub by cub, into a substantial population. Then on Good Friday 1989 the Exxon Valdez spilled eleven million gallons of oil into Prince William Sound and killed twelve thousand in twenty-four hours. Work resumed to re-establish the otter population, and it has been restored to its former numbers. However, it took twenty-four years.

Time is not on our side if we are to heal our damaged earth. We now have the knowledge of good and evil. We now have the understanding of life. The trees are crying out to us and we must change. We must know this. Our children must know this. Our neighbours must know this. Our leaders must know this. This is the last ditch. This is where we turn and fight.

A bleak reminder for the beginning of the New Year but one we can’t hide away from.

He was ordained at Hull Minster by the Bishop of Hull on Sunday 4th June of this year. 

He is now working as Curate for the Drypool Parish team.

We are bringing another spectacular immersive light show by Luxmuralis showcasing the four elements: earth, air, fire and water.

You will be enveloped by each element and witness the transformation of the majestic sacred space of the Minster with projection artworks which interpret the elements within our planet’s environment in which we live and impact upon our human behaviour.

The elements will be conveyed through artistic interpretations, sound and light and allowing you to witness volcanoes, be immersed in the sky and environment, watch as the natural world evolves through dramatic historic and artistic imagery and end in the Nave immersed in the power of the oceans, storms and great stories linked to water.

What a joy to be with so many people this Christmas time. The Minster has held services, concerts, and private events over the past week. Children that have visited the Minster have helped Ellie decorate the beautiful tree outside the Broadley Chapel door. Six hundred plus people came to the Dignity services where they could light candles and remember their loved ones. Our Christingle took place on Saturday what a joy to see the children hearing the Christmas story once again.

Our volunteers were all welcomed last Monday afternoon and shared a picnic together – a time to say ‘thank you’ for their wonderful help over the year. We were delighted to see Jane Owen with us that afternoon.

It is not just the Minster that has been celebrating I was pleased to lead prayers at the Dialogue Society Christmas Celebration last week. I was able to join our friends, mainly, from Turkey, and share in their celebration. The theme of the evening was Peace and Unity – very apt at this time!

Over the past two weeks we invited people to sign up to easy fundraising. THANK YOU for the great response, with 41 people now signed up and £274.72 raised so far!

This is a very simple way in which you can raise money for Hull Minster whenever you are shopping online, with 7,000 brands who will donate part of what you spend to Hull Minster at no extra cost to you.  As you choose your gifts for family and friends this Christmas, you can also choose to give to Hull Minster. Easy Fundraising also covers almost every area of online shopping - groceries, travel, holidays, insurance, utilities, mobiles and more. Not something we are accustomed to seeing at Hull Minster, but on Saturday someone appeared with a chainsaw and made these beautiful ice carvings of a reindeer and sleigh.  Fascinating to watch these being made from a solid block of ice.

For many years I visited a lady called Marion Lawson. She died in her nineties a couple of years ago. Each time I visited she told me of the time when her husband and two sons were in the choir and how she enjoyed making sure the choirboys were smart and tidy on a Sunday morning. This involved laundry, a comb for their hair and a friendly face to encourage them.

Yesterday as I was in the Minster, where down the south aisle was a group of parents who had a steaming machine and an iron in action, ironing choir robes for our children. What a great sight. I could not help but think that Marion would be looking down upon them so proud that someone else has taking on that important role.

One mum said to me they stand taller and feel proud if they are smart and well presented. So ‘thank you’ to all those involved. The commitment of being a choir parent is quite immense – we appreciate you all do to help your children spread the good news of Jesus to the people of this City.

Easy Fundraising when you Shop Online

Over the past two weeks we invited people to sign up to easy fundraising. THANK YOU for the great response, with 41 people now signed up and £274.72 raised so far!

This is a very simple way in which you can raise money for Hull Minster whenever you are shopping online, with 7,000 brands who will donate part of what you spend to Hull Minster at no extra cost to you.  As you choose your gifts for family and friends this Christmas, you can also choose to give to Hull Minster. Easy Fundraising also covers almost every area of online shopping - groceries, travel, holidays, insurance, utilities, mobiles and more. If you haven’t signed up yet it is very easy to register at www.easyfundraising.org.uk. If you are already signed up, you can refer a friend and raise £5. Let us see if we can grow this easy way of raising funds, with forty-one plus people raising donations every time they shop online, we hope to raise a significant amount over the coming year.

Carols by Candlelight

What a fabulous Christmas concert by our choir on Sunday evening. The evening was expertly led by Sally Fairfax with readings, communal carol singing and a wonderful performance by the choir. The young choristers stood out with their ‘angelic’ voices many having solo parts!

Well done Mark and team and thank you to all who attended making several thousands of pounds towards supporting and funding scholarships now and in the future.

Alpha and the Bible courses will all commence again in January. If you would like to take part, please speak to one of the clergy team.

Advent – the arrival, coming or presence.

We enter the season of Advent yet again as we prepare and wait to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus.

In Christian communities around the world, Advent refers to a four-week season of remembering and celebrating the arrival of Jesus on Earth. It is a time to reflect on the humble birth of the Messiah and to join in the anticipation of when he will come again to reunite Heaven and Earth as was promised:

‘Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth,

for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and

there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new

Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as

a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.’   Revelation 21

May this Advent season be filled with peace, with time for prayer, reflection, and anticipation so we may be prepared to celebrate once more the Christ child and all the promises that brings for each of us.

REMEMBERING SERVICE

On Saturday this week at 2 p.m. Rev. Irene will be holding our service for remembering children and siblings that have gone before us. A small reflective service followed by refreshments and time to share with one another.

It will be an opportunity to light a candle, add your loved one’s name to the prayer tree and continue to fill our Christmas tree with memories.

Meet Ellie Hardy

Ellie has been volunteering at the Minster for four years.

She has completely thrown herself into church life volunteering on a number of roles including welcoming and cleaning, as well as stepping up as assistant verger.

She is also part of the Mustard Seed programme along with being on the pastoral team at Archbishop Sentamu academy under Rev. Ann Richards.  

She helps out at most events, sometimes staying until late at night to help set up for the following day.

WALKING WITH ANGELS

An advent Companionship over four Saturdays in December

Bishop of Hull Dr Eleanor Sanderson, with Believe in Hull, invite you to join them in prayer walking across the city of Hull on four successive December Saturdays from the 2nd.

Advent is a time of looking to, and longing for, the coming of Christ. It is also a time when we retell our nativity stories and are reminded of the remarkable ways that the heavens and the earth came together through ordinary people and extraordinary angels responding to God.

Gifts and Giving
This coming Sunday is Advent Sunday. Advent means coming or arriving. It is a time when we remember the prophesies and events that led up to the incarnation on Christmas Day when Jesus came to share our human life, but also a time when we remember that he will come again in glory. In the last few weeks from All Saints and Remembrance Sunday we have been remembering those who have gone before us marked with the sign of the cross. A time to reflect ’to use aright the time left to us here on earth’ and what our legacy will be.

For Christians life is a gift, not something to get through, although there are times for all of us it can feel like that. Those of us who have been parents have had the privilege of bringing new life into the world and nurturing that gift within the wider community of family, church, school, and youth organisations. Sadly, since the 1980’s the number of children and young people involved in the life and worship of the Church of England has declined markedly. The reasons for this are complex, but one of the factors has been the lack of people willing to commit their time and efforts on a regular basis to run youth groups, choirs, Sunday Schools. Because of this decline over the decades, a major aim for the church nationally and one of our key priorities is to grow younger and more diverse. 

Giving our time and gifts

One of the many joys we are seeing at the minster today is the growth in the number of choristers. All of us have our part to play to help one another flourish and grow in the faith. There are so many ways you could be involved.  Maybe you could offer to do a craft at our next messy church or be part of the Minster team with Rev Louise listening to children read at Adelaide Primary School or be part of an Open the Book team. You could help with the refreshments at Little Fishes, be a supporter at Junior Church or at the Saturday Song School. All of us can commit to pray for young people and for our ministry among them.
The photograph is of 97 year old Elsie sharing the peace with seven year old Ella at her first Holy Communion at the Church of the Ascension, Middlesbrough.  One of the poorest estates in the UK.  I got to know them when I was Area Dean.  Elsie died early 2020, and gave half her estate for Children and Youth Work in the Parish.  Beautiful things are now happening because of her generosity.

Giving financially
As well as our time, as part of our gratitude to God we have the privilege to be able to give financially. Sadly we have again set a deficit budget for 2024 of -£65,000. We are moving in the right direction this is less than pre-covid but can only go on a few more years before we run out of savings and are in serious financial trouble. It sounds like a lot of money but there are some simple things that could begin to make a real difference. The first thing is gift-aid envelopes. We are losing considerable amounts of money each week because people are giving in cash and not using the gift aid envelopes. If you are a UK tax payer the church can add 25% to your donation from the government from any taxes you have paid. If 50 people gave £5 more a week that is £13,000 more a year or £15,600 when gift aided. Ideally we would like people to be giving directly through the Parish Giving System which saves hours of counting cash and automatically claims the gift aid.

One of the things we are encouraging people to think about in this season is leaving a financial legacy in your will. To consider leaving a gift to your church family. The PCC ask that you do not restrict this too tightly as priorities change over the years, but there may be aspects of the church's life that you have deeply valued that you would like your gift used for. 

As we prepare to celebrate the greatest gift, our Saviour, Emmanuel, let us receive afresh the gift of God’s love and reflect on how we can express our love for God through the giving of our time, our gifts and talents and the resources that God has entrusted to us. Thank you.

Easy Fundraising through Christmas Shopping
A very simple way in which you can raise money for Hull Minster is to register with www.easyfundraising.org.uk and give as you shop. The app covers over 4,500 shops and websites, all of which give a percentage of your spending to the Minster. When you first sign up, Hull Minster receives a free £5 donation! So far, we have 5 people signed up and shopping, which has raised over £250 for Hull Minster, let’s see if we can grow this simple way of giving as you choose your gifts for family and friends this Christmas. THIS WEEK’S VOLUNTEERS

Meet Don & Mary Kitchman.  Together they have worked in the church for many years.

Don has been a bell ringer for over fifty years and loves taking groups on the very popular tower tours as well as helping with other duties around the church.

Mary is a very active volunteer around the church and is a great member of our multi award winning team in the Trinity Room.  She is always to be found serving refreshments after both services on a Sunday and is very guilty of secretly hiding a piece of chocolate cake after the 11 o’clock service for the Verger in case he doesn’t finish before it all goes!

VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS MARKET


A packed Hull Minster was entertained on Saturday at the Victorian Christmas Market by the AFO choir and the Humberside Police Band.  It was so full at one time we had to stagger admittance on the door.  

Hopefully everyone left with Christmas joy in their heart.

THURSDAY MORNING IN THE MINSTER

 The friends who regularly join us on Thursday mornings, created these beautifully coloured flowers as well as enthusiastically joining in the singing of All Things Bright and Beautiful.

CELTIC CHRISTIANITY

Prior to “lockdown” we found that our faith had become somewhat habitual and dry, we had become ‘Sunday Christians’, and were looking for something else that we could not really name or articulate.

Sharon googled retreats and came across the community of Aidan and Hilda which is a contemporary Celtic Christian community, it’s both international and interdenominational and draws inspiration from Celtic Christian spirituality as lived out by Saint Aidan, Hilda, and others, and aims to rediscover Celtic spirituality and seek to apply these insights and way of living in today’s world.

The community is about seeking to live a holistic Christian spirituality which enables people to connect more deeply with God and the connect with the whole of life. Being open to the leading of the Holy Spirit and bringing healing to individuals, communities, and creation.

Central to being part of the community is developing a rhythm of prayer, work and recreation which seeks to bring prayer and discipleship into the real world and is lived out every day of the week.

We feel that one of the main ways that we live out our faith and discipleship is through our jobs, we both work in drug and alcohol services.  I am a “interventions worker” at HMP Humber and I deliver programs and interventions to prisoners whose drug and alcohol use has been a factor in their offending and want to address their problematic use and live a life free from addictive behaviour.

Sharon works for a national charity called the Forward Trust and manages a residential drug and alcohol treatment centre in Hull.  She leads a team to deliver a 12-step treatment programme to support people to recovery from drug and alcohol addictions.

Currently we are explorers in the community which means we are considering making a long-term commitment to the community, and we are praying and exploring if becoming a “voyager” is the right step for us to take. This means making a long-term commitment to become part of the community and will involve making a public commitment to follow the “way of life”.

However, we will remain in our church, jobs, and community unless God has other plans!

PLEA FOR UKRAINE

It is sad that we must keep asking for help for Ukraine however the situation is not improving, and winter is upon them. Many are living in gymnasiums as their homes have been destroyed. Our Ukrainian friends are asking for any underwear for men and women please, also children from age 7 upwards.

BUSY WEEKEND INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE MINSTER

Hull was buzzing all weekend with this year’s Freedom Festival and inside the Minster the Barbershop concert.

PRAYER POINTS FOR THE FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY

·         For those we know who are sick or bereaved or awaiting hospital procedures, for healing and comfort.

·         For all those living as Christians in Manipur who are suffering. Particularly for Kamsat and his ministry there.

·         For our wonderful team of volunteers, particularly Shirley in her role as Volunteer

·         For our bible studies and courses that many will be led to join in one of the group

COLLECT FOR THE FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY

Merciful God, your Son came to save us

and bore our sins on the cross;

may we trust in your mercy and know your love,

rejoicing in the righteousness

that is ours through Jesus Christ our Lord
