Minster Lifeline 1

Rev. Irene writes:

A new year has arrived in which we as a world are facing so many challenges. Conflict around the world hasn’t disappeared and the constant reminder of climate change is never far away.

Many of us will have made resolutions to do our ‘bit’ to save the planet or to help wherever we can to bring some comfort to all those suffering in war areas.

In our Morning prayer readings we have been looking at Genesis – the creation story and the power that God gave to humans. We are part of God’s work to heal the earth.

Below is a short extract from a reflection by Peter Graystone:

It once seemed that sea otters had been hunted to extinction for their pelts until a tiny colony was found in Alaska and helped, cub by cub, into a substantial population. Then on Good Friday 1989 the Exxon Valdez spilled eleven million gallons of oil into Prince William Sound and killed twelve thousand in twenty-four hours. Work resumed to re-establish the otter population, and it has been restored to its former numbers. However, it took twenty-four years.

Time is not on our side if we are to heal our damaged earth. We now have the knowledge of good and evil. We now have the understanding of life. The trees are crying out to us and we must change. We must know this. Our children must know this. Our neighbours must know this. Our leaders must know this. This is the last ditch. This is where we turn and fight.

A bleak reminder for the beginning of the New Year but one we can’t hide away from.

THE ELEMENTS

Hull Minster is hosting a truly magnificent light installation exploring THE ELEMENTS

Experience the power of the Earth’s elements this week Wednesday to Saturday

We are bringing another spectacular immersive light show by Luxmuralis showcasing the four elements: earth, air, fire and water.

You will be enveloped by each element and witness the transformation of the majestic sacred space of the Minster with projection artworks which interpret the elements within our planet’s environment in which we live and impact upon our human behaviour.

The elements will be conveyed through artistic interpretations, sound and light and allowing you to witness volcanoes, be immersed in the sky and environment, watch as the natural world evolves through dramatic historic and artistic imagery and end in the Nave immersed in the power of the oceans, storms and great stories linked to water.

Be prepared to embrace THE ELEMENTS.

WELCOME CAFÉ (from strangers to friends) AND LISTENING SPACE

We are delighted to welcome back our friends from the Welcome Café. Our keep fit expert was with us on Thursday last week along with support from Hull City Council.

FROM REV. DOMINIC

SEARCH Newsletter January 2024

Dear friends,

In her poem ‘The Gate of The Year’ the Methodist Minnie Louise Haskins writes:

And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:
“Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”

And he replied:
“Go out into the darkness and
put your hand into the Hand of God.
That shall be to you better than light
and safer than a known way.”

As we stand at the gate of 2024, at SEARCH we hope to be a resource for all those across Hull, and beyond, who are once again putting their hands into the Hand of God and stepping out into the dark unknown. We are here for all those striving to sow seeds of the kingdom of God, seeds of justice, peace and joy, in their local communities, city and wider world.

This January we have a number of new sessions starting, and we look forward to connecting and collaborating with you over the year ahead, as we step out into the unknown together!
