This week I had the privilege of spending some time at the MacMillan Cancer Support Coffee Morning being held at Hull Minster. This community event was a partnership between Hull Minster and MacMillan. In many ways, this event represented what is best about our life as a church. The vision for the coffee morning came from one of our wonderful volunteers, who organised and led it. Lots of people were involved, including other Hull Minster volunteers, and our wonderful staff who also supported it. It was a genuine team effort and sign of the Kingdom as all sorts of people contributed their gifts.
And then for the event itself. People affected by cancer or whose loved ones have been affected by cancer came along, as well as others wishing to support the charity. People came who are part of our own church community, those who come to grief café or those who are part of our congregations, as well as those who were visiting who are connected with MacMillan. A representative from MacMillan head office was also in attendance, who was fortuitously in the area and so wanted to come along. They were really so grateful for all they were witnessing.
This for me is church life at its best: the people of God bringing their gifts, being open-handed and open-hearted to partner with others doing wonderful work outside of the church. By running events such as these, we recognize God’s action in the world, for example displayed in the specialist nurses and support groups that support those with cancer or those lost to cancer, generously funded almost entirely by donations.
I received a message from one of my good friends this week, who works in a theological college. He informed me that he is lecturing on the Missio Dei this week. The Missio Dei, as the word implies, refers to God’s mission, God’s action in the world. It is a term that recognizes that God is a sent God: Jesus was sent by the Father to come and be with us in the person of his Son Jesus Christ. And as the Father sent the Son, so the Father and the Son send us, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Moreover, it recognizes that God is at work in all aspects of the world around us, for example, in healthcare. Therefore the call of God is to find out where God is at work, and to join in with Him. That means getting out there, and finding out what He is getting up to. For us at Hull Minster, we can often find out what God is getting up to when we partner with people across our city. It’s what makes Hull Minster so special.
I wonder if we might be attentive to where we are seeing God at work in the world around us? How might we join in? When we do, it often brings great joy, connection and community, all the things that we all need, and are a sign of God’s Kingdom among us.
8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Prisons Week is the 11th-17th of October, culminating in Prisoners’ Sunday. This church-led event invites Christian communities to pray and take action for those affected by imprisonment.

💚Hull Minster Crafters £300 Donation
So, something fabulous happened recently at Hull Minster.
The Craft group has quietly been making and selling beautiful handmade items and taking very generous donations!
Hull Minster Crafters have now made a £300 donation to the Stained-Glass Repair appeal.

It was smashing to have +E with us at Book Fair. She rushed over to join us for a book signing. We are super happy to have sold 35 copies so far. “Walking with Angels” is a very special advent book and would make a lovely Christmas present for the book worms. We have a few copies available before we restock.

💚Brooklands Photographic Exhibition
Once again we had a lovely exhibition from the talented Brooklands. They gave a £100 donation to Hull Minster and logged over 800 visitors in the week. they also raised £140 for Womens Aid.
They are striving to boost their members and have a free membership offer for <25’s. Spread the work to any young photographers who want a bit of support.
💚Hearing support
After raising the need for someone to "look after" and issue our hearing support equipment at services, I still hope that role could be filled and need a volunteer or two to offer their services but I am interested that a number of you have come forward to say that you do struggle to hear what is being said or read out aloud. The Sennheiser App can access our Hull Minster guest Wi-Fi channel to pick up the sound system and feed to hearing aids, please do mention to me if you already use that, or if you need help to use it.

💚Volunteers Crazy Golf
💚This month the volunteers enjoyed a night out at "The Lost City Adventure Golf" in Hull playing a game of 18 hole crazy golf on a range of jungle themed courses! 16 of our staff and volunteer team attended and a lot of fun was had with some of us even achieving multiple "hole in ones"!! The night was concluded with a bottomless brunch option. The "Banana Colada" went down a treat as well as the milk shakes which were delicious! All of those that attended had an amazing time! Hull Minster would like to thank all of our volunteers for everything they do! Their time, dedication and enthusiasm for volunteering ensure that we can open our doors and live up to our church's mission! We simply could not achieve this without our volunteer team! 💚Halftime Score: Hull Minster window appeal hits 50%
Hull Minster’s fundraising appeal to repair its historic stained glass has reached the halfway mark thanks to the generosity of the local community.
Hull Minster’s great West Window was badly damaged by a stray rugby ball in February this year; it is vital that the window is repaired before the winter hits and further damage could be caused by inclement weather.
Fundraising for the £30,000 repairs, which include some remedial works to the renowned East window and the stained glass in the North Transept, has now reached the critical halfway point with the support of an anonymous donor who is providing matched funds to encourage others to get involved and support the Minster. That means every £1 someone donates will be doubled!
Hull Minster’s Heritage Manager, James Cameron, explains the importance of the windows of Hull Minster: “The repair of these windows is about far more than restoring beautiful stained glass. It is about protecting a major part of Hull’s heritage, improving the resilience of the building, and helping ensure Hull Minster remains sustainable for the future. We are deeply grateful for the support already shown, and the match-funding opportunity gives us a real chance to make lasting progress.”
It’s now all hands to the scrum as the Minster is urging the community to give whatever they can to meet the fundraising target and ensure the church can be weathertight before winter.
Vicar, Dominic Black says: “We’ve been overwhelmed by how the Hull community has rallied behind this appeal, including our wonderful matching donors. Reaching the halfway point is a brilliant milestone, but we still need one final push to get over the try line and ensure these historic windows are fully restored. Every contribution, large or small, brings us closer to seeing the light shine through that glass again.”

We had some special over night sleepover guests. They enjoyed heritage crafts and a tour. A great camp out and croissants for breakfast.

💚Macmillan Coffee Afternoon💚
A huge and heartfelt thank you goes to every single person who supported our Macmillan Coffee Afternoon! Whether you baked, donated, served, bought, ate, drank, or simply stopped by for a chat and a brew. Over two days, we raised a magnificent total of £510.91 - every penny going to support the incredible work of Macmillan.

It was such a joy to see our church filled with familiar faces and new ones, all coming together for such a meaningful cause. We were even honoured to welcome Macmillan’s Head of HR, who popped in to join us for a cup of tea! It was lovely to share our space and our support in person.
Our quiet prayer space was filled with prayers too, written and spoken, offered with hope and love. I was truly touched by everyone’s generosity, kindness, and care. Once again, it was a wonderful gathering of our community, our volunteers and our parishioners, all in one place, doing something beautiful together.
