Advent – the arrival, coming or presence.

We enter the season of Advent yet again as we prepare and wait to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus.

In Christian communities around the world, Advent refers to a four-week season of remembering and celebrating the arrival of Jesus on Earth. It is a time to reflect on the humble birth of the Messiah and to join in the anticipation of when he will come again to reunite Heaven and Earth as was promised:

‘Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth,

for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and

there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new

Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as

a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.’   Revelation 21

May this Advent season be filled with peace, with time for prayer, reflection, and anticipation so we may be prepared to celebrate once more the Christ child and all the promises that brings for each of us.

REMEMBERING SERVICE

On Saturday this week at 2 p.m. Rev. Irene will be holding our service for remembering children and siblings that have gone before us. A small reflective service followed by refreshments and time to share with one another.

It will be an opportunity to light a candle, add your loved one’s name to the prayer tree and continue to fill our Christmas tree with memories.

THIS WEEK’S VOLUNTEER

Meet Ellie Hardy

Ellie has been volunteering at the Minster for four years.

She has completely thrown herself into church life volunteering on a number of roles including welcoming and cleaning, as well as stepping up as assistant verger.

She is also part of the Mustard Seed programme along with being on the pastoral team at Archbishop Sentamu academy under Rev. Ann Richards.  

She helps out at most events, sometimes staying until late at night to help set up for the following day.

WALKING WITH ANGELS

An advent Companionship over four Saturdays in December

Bishop of Hull Dr Eleanor Sanderson, with Believe in Hull, invite you to join them in prayer walking across the city of Hull on four successive December Saturdays from the 2nd.

Advent is a time of looking to, and longing for, the coming of Christ. It is also a time when we retell our nativity stories and are reminded of the remarkable ways that the heavens and the earth came together through ordinary people and extraordinary angels responding to God.

REQUEST FOR THE CHILDREN IN THE UKRAINE

We are asking everyone if finance's allow, if you could buy a selection box to donate to the children of Ukraine for Christmas.  The box's have to be collected by the 10th December latest.

Gifts and Giving
This coming Sunday is Advent Sunday. Advent means coming or arriving. It is a time when we remember the prophesies and events that led up to the incarnation on Christmas Day when Jesus came to share our human life, but also a time when we remember that he will come again in glory. In the last few weeks from All Saints and Remembrance Sunday we have been remembering those who have gone before us marked with the sign of the cross. A time to reflect ’to use aright the time left to us here on earth’ and what our legacy will be.

For Christians life is a gift, not something to get through, although there are times for all of us it can feel like that. Those of us who have been parents have had the privilege of bringing new life into the world and nurturing that gift within the wider community of family, church, school, and youth organisations. Sadly, since the 1980’s the number of children and young people involved in the life and worship of the Church of England has declined markedly. The reasons for this are complex, but one of the factors has been the lack of people willing to commit their time and efforts on a regular basis to run youth groups, choirs, Sunday Schools. Because of this decline over the decades, a major aim for the church nationally and one of our key priorities is to grow younger and more diverse. 

Giving our time and gifts

One of the many joys we are seeing at the minster today is the growth in the number of choristers. All of us have our part to play to help one another flourish and grow in the faith. There are so many ways you could be involved.  Maybe you could offer to do a craft at our next messy church or be part of the Minster team with Rev Louise listening to children read at Adelaide Primary School or be part of an Open the Book team. You could help with the refreshments at Little Fishes, be a supporter at Junior Church or at the Saturday Song School. All of us can commit to pray for young people and for our ministry among them.
The photograph is of 97 year old Elsie sharing the peace with seven year old Ella at her first Holy Communion at the Church of the Ascension, Middlesbrough.  One of the poorest estates in the UK.  I got to know them when I was Area Dean.  Elsie died early 2020, and gave half her estate for Children and Youth Work in the Parish.  Beautiful things are now happening because of her generosity.

Giving financially
As well as our time, as part of our gratitude to God we have the privilege to be able to give financially. Sadly we have again set a deficit budget for 2024 of -£65,000. We are moving in the right direction this is less than pre-covid but can only go on a few more years before we run out of savings and are in serious financial trouble. It sounds like a lot of money but there are some simple things that could begin to make a real difference. The first thing is gift-aid envelopes. We are losing considerable amounts of money each week because people are giving in cash and not using the gift aid envelopes. If you are a UK tax payer the church can add 25% to your donation from the government from any taxes you have paid. If 50 people gave £5 more a week that is £13,000 more a year or £15,600 when gift aided. Ideally we would like people to be giving directly through the Parish Giving System which saves hours of counting cash and automatically claims the gift aid.

One of the things we are encouraging people to think about in this season is leaving a financial legacy in your will. To consider leaving a gift to your church family. The PCC ask that you do not restrict this too tightly as priorities change over the years, but there may be aspects of the church's life that you have deeply valued that you would like your gift used for. 

As we prepare to celebrate the greatest gift, our Saviour, Emmanuel, let us receive afresh the gift of God’s love and reflect on how we can express our love for God through the giving of our time, our gifts and talents and the resources that God has entrusted to us. Thank you.

Easy Fundraising through Christmas Shopping
A very simple way in which you can raise money for Hull Minster is to register with www.easyfundraising.org.uk and give as you shop. The app covers over 4,500 shops and websites, all of which give a percentage of your spending to the Minster. When you first sign up, Hull Minster receives a free £5 donation! So far, we have 5 people signed up and shopping, which has raised over £250 for Hull Minster, let’s see if we can grow this simple way of giving as you choose your gifts for family and friends this Christmas. THIS WEEK’S VOLUNTEERS

Meet Don & Mary Kitchman.  Together they have worked in the church for many years.

Don has been a bell ringer for over fifty years and loves taking groups on the very popular tower tours as well as helping with other duties around the church.

Mary is a very active volunteer around the church and is a great member of our multi award winning team in the Trinity Room.  She is always to be found serving refreshments after both services on a Sunday and is very guilty of secretly hiding a piece of chocolate cake after the 11 o’clock service for the Verger in case he doesn’t finish before it all goes!

VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS MARKET


A packed Hull Minster was entertained on Saturday at the Victorian Christmas Market by the AFO choir and the Humberside Police Band.  It was so full at one time we had to stagger admittance on the door.  

Hopefully everyone left with Christmas joy in their heart.

THURSDAY MORNING IN THE MINSTER

 The friends who regularly join us on Thursday mornings, created these beautifully coloured flowers as well as enthusiastically joining in the singing of All Things Bright and Beautiful.

CELTIC CHRISTIANITY

Prior to “lockdown” we found that our faith had become somewhat habitual and dry, we had become ‘Sunday Christians’, and were looking for something else that we could not really name or articulate.

Sharon googled retreats and came across the community of Aidan and Hilda which is a contemporary Celtic Christian community, it’s both international and interdenominational and draws inspiration from Celtic Christian spirituality as lived out by Saint Aidan, Hilda, and others, and aims to rediscover Celtic spirituality and seek to apply these insights and way of living in today’s world.

The community is about seeking to live a holistic Christian spirituality which enables people to connect more deeply with God and the connect with the whole of life. Being open to the leading of the Holy Spirit and bringing healing to individuals, communities, and creation.

Central to being part of the community is developing a rhythm of prayer, work and recreation which seeks to bring prayer and discipleship into the real world and is lived out every day of the week.

We feel that one of the main ways that we live out our faith and discipleship is through our jobs, we both work in drug and alcohol services.  I am a “interventions worker” at HMP Humber and I deliver programs and interventions to prisoners whose drug and alcohol use has been a factor in their offending and want to address their problematic use and live a life free from addictive behaviour.

Sharon works for a national charity called the Forward Trust and manages a residential drug and alcohol treatment centre in Hull.  She leads a team to deliver a 12-step treatment programme to support people to recovery from drug and alcohol addictions.

Currently we are explorers in the community which means we are considering making a long-term commitment to the community, and we are praying and exploring if becoming a “voyager” is the right step for us to take. This means making a long-term commitment to become part of the community and will involve making a public commitment to follow the “way of life”.

However, we will remain in our church, jobs, and community unless God has other plans!

It is sad that we must keep asking for help for Ukraine however the situation is not improving, and winter is upon them. Many are living in gymnasiums as their homes have been destroyed. Our Ukrainian friends are asking for any underwear for men and women please, also children from age 7 upwards.

Last week was interfaith week and our Muslim friends from the Dialogue Society

came to our 11 a.m. service offering gifts of Noah’s pudding. One hundred puddings

all individually wrapped were given to the congregation after the service. The

ingredients included beans, rice, chickpeas, dried apricots, dried figs, orange, rose

water, walnuts and pomegranate seeds to decorate. The puddings were absolutely

delicious and enjoyed by all.

This was such a kind gesture and an opportunity for our new friends to meet with our congregation and to be made welcome.

At our 9 30 service on a Sunday morning we always begin with a chorus that says:

God welcomes all, strangers, and friends,

God’s love is strong, and it never ends.

Sunday was a true opportunity to share and to welcome those of a different faith. I was delighted to be invited to the group in December where they have asked me to pray at their Christmas event.

THURSDAY MORNINGS IN CHURCH

Have you managed to visit the church on a Thursday morning?  It is one of the busier days with the “drop in café” taking place arising from the warm space initiative and an extra helping of volunteers making sure things run smoothly (with the assistance of the staff arranging the set up and under the watchful help of the usual Duty Manager Gerry). A happy band! On Wednesday evening this week Irene mentioned that there were a number of reasons preventing some of the usual helpers being around this week and the monthly “Praise service” would be on too; she was concerned about how it would all work. I popped in to offer my help – the place was buzzing. Several Care Homes now bring those they look after – in all there would be almost 100 souls sitting there with wheelchairs and walking aids aplenty.  Sitting around tables and with colouring in sheets available, the Praise Service, whilst short, engaged them with God’s love and wonderful creation. We remembered His love for us and sang a couple of well-known songs. The place was noisy and alive! The thanks were profusely offered from those present and the cake and drinks enthusiastically consumed. This is the church you can visit. I commend it to you.  Sam McGaw

VIGIL FOR PEACE

A vigil for peace for those caught up in the Israel-Gaza crisis.  People of peace, of all faiths and none, are welcome to gather in solidarity for all who are suffering in the conflict.  Hull Minster 26th November 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

WELCOME CAFÉ (from strangers to friends) & LISTENING SPACE

Welcome café last week was in the first week of the school summer holidays and we had lots of families visiting, enjoying the heritage activities but also the giant Jenga! It stood out how many people said they did not know the Minster had so much to offer families and they almost universally used the word ‘Welcome’ in their description of their experience.  One lovely lady said she felt as she entered the Minster she was wrapped in a blanket of welcome. What a lovely image. Our wonderful welcomers make it so easy to come through the door and the Welcome Café adds so much to the service a Minster is intended to offer. I realise I have used the word ‘welcome’ a lot, but I promise you it is the right word to use! Please come and join us on any Thursday between 10.30am and 3pm for coffee, tea and a warm Welcome. Soup served from 12ish.

From 12:30 soup will be served and drinks throughout the afternoon until 3 p.m.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

It is great to have ReNew and Hull City Council present during our Welcome Café held every Thursday in the Minster. These groups are there to help anyone with concerns or queries.

I must emphasise that this is available in the same way the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space are: to absolutely everyone.  That means you, your friends, family members, and even those who walk into the church for the very first time.

If you have any questions about either of these two organisations, or how you could be part of the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space team, please don’t hesitate to ask either Rev Irene or Tim.

TEDDY BEARS’ PICNIC

Just a taster of a great day with two hundred children in church. It’s amazing how appealing a zip wire and a parachute can be!!

We are delighted to be hosting ‘Inspired: the word into action’ presented by the Riding Lights Theatre Company in partnership with the Bible Society.  This will be a great evening Bringing the Bible to life. We hope that you will encourage people to come along and bring friends and family. There are discount rates for families.

Many people are enquiring how Jane is after being taken ill just over two weeks ago. Although she is still very poorly, there are signs of progress. If you wish to send Jane a card please bring into the Minster and they will be delivered to her home address.

There is only family visiting at the moment. We will update you each week in Lifeline.

SATURDAY CONCERT SERIES

This Series is now approaching its second half, and we still have more exciting concerts for you to enjoy!

Over the last four Saturdays we have been entertained by the North Ferriby Ladies Choir, our own Vox Trinitas ensemble, Richard Sleight on flute and this last weekend, the Hull Barbershop Harmony Club.

We are now taking a short break but will return on September 30th with flute music from choir members Mair Mills and Thomas Williams.

Rev. Irene writes:

And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people:

and they shall beat their swords into ploughshares,

and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. (Isaiah 2:4).

Sadly this Remembrance Day made us think not only of those who fought so bravely in wars of the past but also a reminder of just how many people are living in 21st century wars.

The poppy is a sign of hope, so we wear our poppies as a reminder of those past, present, and future. We pray for ways forward to bring peace in the Middle East, Ukraine, Yemen. Afghanistan and many other areas of unrest.

We give thanks for the wonderful display adorning the font as we commemorate Remembrance in the Minster. This is thanks to Fiona who gets great pleasure in making sure we have flowers in the church. We also thank Jean who has spent many years resourcing and leading what used to be a ‘flower team’. Sadly there is no longer a team however with Fiona and Jean rest assured the displays will continue

This year’s Christmas card is from an original oil painting by local artist Tony Denison. The cards are now on sale from the Minster Shop. Packs of 5 are £6 and single cards are £1.50. There are nativity advent calendars for £3.50 and a stand-up advent card for £2. Advent candles will be in stock soon.

ANNABELLE – is one of our two head choristers and is preparing for her first-grade exam on the organ. She played one of her pieces, a short study by Herbert Howells during communion last Sunday.  I hope she will continue to play for us as she masters each piece. Ben Newton

TOWER TOURS  from John Major

One of the last groups on the Tower Tour for this year.  What a fabulous group from all over the UK including a couple from Trinidad & Tobago.

There are still a few places left for Saturday 18th after which we then close for the winter and restart in February 2024.

TRINITY ROOMS – A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

On the evening of 9th November Trinity Room at Hull Minster were invited to the Double Tree Hilton Hotel to attend the 2023 Reyta’s (Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards) as finalists for Remarkable New Tourism Business of the year 2023.

It would be true to say there was a buzz of excitement and trepidation about the award itself, but more so the happy opportunity for a group of colleagues and volunteers who have become friends to be part of a lovely evening out together celebrating what is great about the area in which we live and work. We all donned our posh frocks and suits and arrived to; a cocktail reception followed by a three-course dinner and the awards ceremony.

Sitting together at a table full of laughter and stories and lots of pictures, we settled in to enjoy the evening.

It came to that point in the evening when our category was announced. We watched tentatively as all the finalists were introduced one by one, giving a small cheer as the huge screen showed images of our Trinity Room, there is something quite magical about seeing the place you are incredibly proud to be part of displayed on a 10ft cinema screen.

Instead of going straight to the winners, our host told us that it was so close between the finalists that the judges had decided to award a ‘Highly Commended’, as well as a winner.

We all at that moment hoped for, Highly Commended. It wasn’t us.

After what seemed like an age the words “the winner is….” Rang out followed by, “Trinity Room at Hull Minster” ……..

In all honesty we cheered with elation, (I screamed) and after what has been a year of ups and downs and hard graft our amazing team walked from the table to the stage to be presented with the ‘Remarkable New Tourism Business of The Year Award’  by Janet Adamson, (one of the brilliant Hey volunteers).

With a feeling of immense pride and disbelief we assembled on the stage amid cheers and applause to be photographed. It was the most wonderful and humbling experience to be recognised for all the hard work and passion our team shows every day.

I can categorically say that not a single member of the Trinity Room team works here for awards, recognition, or praise. We are here because we care about the community, the Minster and every person who walks through our door and if awards like this bring more people to our door, we hope we can continue to put a smile on every face and show we have open arms and a friendly ear for all who need it.

Well done Trinity Room team from a very proud and emotional team captain.

Thank you to everyone for the support in getting us to this point. Onwards and Upwards, next week we have been invited to the Houses of Parliament to receive an international award for sustainability from the Green Organisation. It is turning out to be quite a month.

It is sad that we must keep asking for help for Ukraine however the situation is not improving, and winter is upon them. Many are living in gymnasiums as their homes have been destroyed. Our Ukrainian friends are asking for any underwear for men and women please, also children from age 7 upwards.

Rev. Irene writes:

You may have noticed our great friend Tim Wilson has been ‘hobbling’ around the church for many months now. The good news is that, at last, he is going to have a ‘new knee’ fitted at the end of this week. Being absent from church has worried him as he is the organiser of the very important after service Sunday refreshments! Who would be willing to step up and help? All his concerns were dismissed this morning when two choir mums saw his plight and were on hand to offer their help each week. This not only means that we can continue to enjoy coffee and biscuits after our service, but also is such a great example of the Minster people working as a family. We are so pleased for Bev and Ginny and Carieleigh to join with Kim and Mary to continue with this vital service!

Sometimes we hang onto things and think if we don’t do it then it will disappear, however we must remember that God will provide, and God wants us to work together as a family.

I hope we can encourage others to see what is needed and to offer their help – we are so thankful when this happens.

Hebrews 13:16: “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”

No single task you do with Christ in view, for his glory and for the good of other people, is wasted, no matter how mundane it may seem.

SAD NEWS

We heard yesterday that Robert Crawshaw who worshipped at Holy Trinity for many years with his partner Mary Butcher has died. Mary was our churchwarden late 90’s early 2000’s, her and Robert built up a friendship and eventually were married and moved to the South Bank. Robert was a lively member of the PCC. He died quite suddenly last weekend. Our prayers and thoughts with Mary and their families.

We will announce when Robert’s funeral is to be held in due course.

GOLDEN BOOK

On Remembrance Sunday 12th November starting at 1:30 p.m. we will once again be reading the names from the Golden Book.  If anyone is willing to read a few pages of names, please let me know.

The event will start with the placing of the Golden Book and Peace Lantern, followed by opening prayers from Rev. Rob.

This is a very moving event that takes about three hours to complete.  You are welcome to come and go as you please.

Messy Church on 1st November was a great day. Caroline came up with six fantastic crafts to represent God’s guiding light, including lanterns, lighthouses and light up butterflies. Becky then led us in action songs and Irene in worship before tea and cakes were served. It was wonderful to welcome young members of the choir, Girls Brigade and Little Fishes in what turned out to be a lovely gathering of the church family. Our esteemed Verger looked particularly fetching in his sun hat, embellished for me by our very talented Girls Brigade.

WELCOME CAFÉ (from strangers to friends) & LISTENING SPACE

Welcome café last week was in the first week of the school summer holidays and we had lots of families visiting, enjoying the heritage activities but also the giant Jenga! It stood out how many people said they did not know the Minster had so much to offer families and they almost universally used the word ‘Welcome’ in their description of their experience.  One lovely lady said she felt as she entered the Minster she was wrapped in a blanket of welcome. What a lovely image. Our wonderful welcomers make it so easy to come through the door and the Welcome Café adds so much to the service a Minster is intended to offer. I realise I have used the word ‘welcome’ a lot, but I promise you it is the right word to use! Please come and join us on any Thursday between 10.30am and 3pm for coffee, tea and a warm Welcome. Soup served from 12ish.

From 12:30 soup will be served and drinks throughout the afternoon until 3 p.m.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

It is great to have ReNew and Hull City Council present during our Welcome Café held every Thursday in the Minster. These groups are there to help anyone with concerns or queries.

I must emphasise that this is available in the same way the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space are: to absolutely everyone.  That means you, your friends, family members, and even those who walk into the church for the very first time.

If you have any questions about either of these two organisations, or how you could be part of the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space team, please don’t hesitate to ask either Rev Irene or Tim.

TEDDY BEARS’ PICNIC

Just a taster of a great day with two hundred children in church. It’s amazing how appealing a zip wire and a parachute can be!!

In case I have missed thanking any volunteers – couldn’t have done it without you, what a great team. THANK YOU!

We are delighted to be hosting ‘Inspired: the word into action’ presented by the Riding Lights Theatre Company in partnership with the Bible Society.  This will be a great evening Bringing the Bible to life. We hope that you will encourage people to come along and bring friends and family. There are discount rates for families.

Many people are enquiring how Jane is after being taken ill just over two weeks ago. Although she is still very poorly, there are signs of progress. If you wish to send Jane a card please bring into the Minster and they will be delivered to her home address.

SATURDAY CONCERT SERIES

This Series is now approaching its second half, and we still have more exciting concerts for you to enjoy!

Over the last four Saturdays we have been entertained by the North Ferriby Ladies Choir, our own Vox Trinitas ensemble, Richard Sleight on flute and this last weekend, the Hull Barbershop Harmony Club.

We are now taking a short break but will return on September 30th with flute music from choir members Mair Mills and Thomas Williams.

My little boy has left me in no doubt that it is Halloween this week, as there have been Halloween activities at his groups and at his school, which seems to have captured his imagination. Halloween, at its origin, is derived from ‘All Hallows’ Eve’. In other words, Halloween is a celebration before the Christian feast day of All Saint’s Day.

All Saints Day is the time of the year in the Christian calendar when Christians remember and celebrate the faithful departed who have come before us, including the saints and the martyrs. Whilst you have to search very hard these days to find the link between what is bought and what goes on at Halloween, the Christian roots are there, if we are willing to look.

One thing that we will see at Halloween are pumpkins lit up from the inside by candlelight. Although contemporary renderings of Halloween focus on dark and scary images, the true image of All Hallows’ Eve is that of light. Those Christians who have come before us have passed from the light of Christ here on earth, through death, and into the light of Christ.

This image of light is prominent in the Bible. We remember that ‘God is light, in him there is no darkness at all’ (1 John 1.5), and that light overcomes darkness. The Psalmist says in Psalm 139.11-12:

‘If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me

and the light become night around me,”
even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,

for darkness is as light to you.

Christians also believe that they bear God’s light and carry his light: the light of Jesus, for ‘Jesus is the light of the world’ (John 8.12). Jesus tells his disciples, and all those who follow him, to ‘Let your light shine’ (Matthew 5.16). This is symbolised at the end of the baptism service, where those who are baptised are given a candle lit from the paschal candle, accompanied by the words:

‘God has delivered us from the dominion of darkness

And has given us a place with the saints in light.

You have received the light of Christ;

Walk in this light all the days of your life.

Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father.  (Common Worship)

We will be exploring these themes of light in our Messy Church this week. But at this time of year, perhaps it is worth us all reflecting on our God who is light, and us as Christians who receive God’s light, walk in God’s light, and share God’s light with the world around us. For God overcomes all darkness and fear, and shines his light, even in the darkest places.

‘The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?’ (Psalm 27.1)

Shirley Kay - Volunteer Manager. Joined the Minster in May 2022.

Born and raised in Teeside in a small town called Redcar, the youngest of three girls. Born into a middle-class family, I was raised to respect my elders, played out until it was tea-time and went to bed without question. 

From leaving school I went straight into retail until having my three children. 

Jobs I've held since then were varied, from Retail Manager, Area Manager, IT software trainer, Bar Manager and Police Community Support Officer.  Prior to my current position, I worked as a Project Manager for the Salvation Army at William Booth Hostel. I got great satisfaction from this role, supporting and rehousing the homeless. I like to think I have brought my skills from all positions into my role today.

On days off I care for my elderly parents, visit my children and grandchildren, and go on caravan holidays with Grahame and our dog Charlie.

Julia Allum has been tending to the ‘washing of linen’ each week for many years now. As she is not well at present, is there anyone who would step in take this role on, hopefully temporarily. It is a small amount of communion cloths each week.

It is sad that we need to keep asking for help for Ukraine however the situation is not improving there, and winter is upon them. Many are living in gymnasiums as their homes have been destroyed. Our Ukrainian friends are asking for any underwear for men and women please, also children from age 7 upwards. They are also desperate for a printer and any stationary for the schooling of the children.

Please circulate and publish this message widely within your church and the wider community.

A Joint Statement on Violence in Israel and Gaza

We watch with grief and horror as the violence in Israel and Gaza intensifies, following the dreadful terrorist attack on Israel by Hamas. We remember that all people are created in the image of God, and therefore deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, to live lives free of fear and violence. 

As the archbishops said in their joint statement last week:

“We are grieved and deeply concerned at the violence in Israel and Gaza, and we unequivocally condemn the attacks by Hamas. We pray for those who are mourning, those who are injured, and all those fearing for their safety. We pray for restraint on all sides, and renewed efforts towards a just peace for all. The way forward must be for both sides to build confidence in a secure future through which Israel and its people can live in security within its internationally recognised borders, and Palestinians have their own state and live in their lands in security, and with peace and justice.” 

We condemn the acts of violence, particularly those that are targeting innocent civilians – men, women and children who are killed and held hostage while simply trying to live. We ask that leaders seek a way forward that ends the vicious cycles of violence and finds a way to build peace among peoples and nations, in which everyone can flourish and prosper. 

We pray that the peace of God will reign; that justice and mercy will bring an end to war and terror. We pray for the freedom of all peoples, that they may live in unity with their neighbours, that their humanity may be respected and that they may live without fear. 

We pray too for an end to violence in this country, particularly for an end to antisemitic violence; our Jewish brothers and sisters deserve to live lives free from fear. No school should have to close because of security threats; places of worship should not need security guards to keep worshippers safe. We stand in solidarity with those in our communities who may not feel welcomed and respected. Prejudice has no place in our society, whether anti-Jewish or anti-Muslim, and the war between Hamas and Israel must not be used to demonise whole communities and destabilise the peace that we so value in our cities and towns. 

In the words of Archbishop Hosam, with people around the world, we pray: 

O God of all justice and peace
we cry out to you in the midst of the pain and trauma
of violence and fear which prevails in the Holy Land.
Be with those who need you in these days of suffering;
we pray for people of all faiths – Jews, Muslims and Christians and for all people of the land.
While we pray to you, O Lord, for an end to violence and the establishment of peace,
we also call for you to bring justice and equity to the peoples.
Guide us into your kingdom
where all people are treated with dignity and honour as your children
for, to all of us, you are our Heavenly Father.
In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Difficult days around the world, not least the conflict between Israel and Gaza. What can we do? Continue to pray for peace. The devastation is clearly seen on both sides, Israel trying to cope with the sudden loss of loved ones and not knowing where their families are being kept hostage. The Palestinians suffering revenge for an act of wickedness carried out by Hamas.

Amongst all this people are starving and desperate, what a cruel world.

As Christians we must stand firm that God is in this situation, Jesus knew what suffering was all about and so we pray.

I have had the pleasure this last week, of taking a young man and his very proud Mum on a tower tour.  He is a chorister at the Chapel of St. James Palace.  Already, at such a young age, he has an impressive CV: singing at the Platinum Jubilee celebrations for Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and closer to our region at York Minster for last year’s Maundy Thursday Service.

They were such a joy.  I’m so glad I was back from my holiday for that day!  He was so polite, I had to ask him to stop calling me ‘sir’.  

The young man will be leaving the Palace after another four terms, so I did mention he could join one of the best choirs in the country here at Hull Minster!

WELCOME CAFÉ (from strangers to friends) & LISTENING SPACE

Welcome café last week was in the first week of the school summer holidays and we had lots of families visiting, enjoying the heritage activities but also the giant Jenga! It stood out how many people said they did not know the Minster had so much to offer families and they almost universally used the word ‘Welcome’ in their description of their experience.  One lovely lady said she felt as she entered the Minster she was wrapped in a blanket of welcome. What a lovely image. Our wonderful welcomers make it so easy to come through the door and the Welcome Café adds so much to the service a Minster is intended to offer. I realise I have used the word ‘welcome’ a lot, but I promise you it is the right word to use! Please come and join us on any Thursday between 10.30am and 3pm for coffee, tea and a warm Welcome. Soup served from 12ish.

From 12:30 soup will be served and drinks throughout the afternoon until 3 p.m.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

It is great to have ReNew and Hull City Council present during our Welcome Café held every Thursday in the Minster. These groups are there to help anyone with concerns or queries.

I must emphasise that this is available in the same way the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space are: to absolutely everyone.  That means you, your friends, family members, and even those who walk into the church for the very first time.

If you have any questions about either of these two organisations, or how you could be part of the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space team, please don’t hesitate to ask either Rev Irene or Tim.

TEDDY BEARS’ PICNIC

Just a taster of a great day with two hundred children in church. It’s amazing how appealing a zip wire and a parachute can be!!

We are delighted to be hosting ‘Inspired: the word into action’ presented by the Riding Lights Theatre Company in partnership with the Bible Society.  This will be a great evening Bringing the Bible to life. We hope that you will encourage people to come along and bring friends and family. There are discount rates for families.

Many people are enquiring how Jane is after being taken ill just over two weeks ago. Although she is still very poorly, there are signs of progress. If you wish to send Jane a card please bring into the Minster and they will be delivered to her home address.

SATURDAY CONCERT SERIES

This Series is now approaching its second half, and we still have more exciting concerts for you to enjoy!

Over the last four Saturdays we have been entertained by the North Ferriby Ladies Choir, our own Vox Trinitas ensemble, Richard Sleight on flute and this last weekend, the Hull Barbershop Harmony Club.

We are now taking a short break but will return on September 30th with flute music from choir members Mair Mills and Thomas Williams.

Discussing with my son on Friday evening last week as we watched England v Australia friendly football match it was noticeable that the VIP stands were not even half full. We guessed many would be doing other things, drinking and chatting in the VIP lounges. I couldn’t help but think this was a good illustration to use in my sermon on the parable of the Wedding banquet. How those with the places of honour at the King’s wedding banquet refused the king’s invitation but others of no such importance were there in their thousands. A great example that God wants to know and welcome us all. We don’t have to earn a place or have status we just need to come and let God reclothe us ready for the Kingdom – Jesus gave us this opportunity when he died on the cross for us. It’s not every day we get an opportunity like that!

GIRLS BRIGADE

Mark and Mia kindly came to Girls Brigade this week to help the girls they are going to take part in Girls' Brigade International Christmas Carol request. 

The carol choice was Jesus Jingle Bells and Mark and Mia lead the group in a practice before Al kindly filmed the final version. It was lovely for the girls to be supported by the choral experts and skilled film maker in their endeavours.  Thank you to all three of you.

To all you lovely Members and supporters at Hull Minster, I wanted to thank you for your kind wishes of support and generosity. Your love and messages of support have given me strength and encouragement to keep trying to get better. I think of you regularly and hope that you are all getting the most out of supporting Shirley and Alastair in their work. I miss you all and have been pleased to see so many of you as visitors. Your cards have been overwhelming - I’ve loved reading your messages of support.
Castle Hill hospital has been terrific, with the nursing teams committing unbelievable levels of commitment and dedication. I’ve been taught how to breathe, cook, wash, and stay busy with card games and rural walks. Can’t wait to get back to Minster life, however!!

JUNIOR CHURCH

This week the younger children in junior Church were learning about the Bible.  The words to today’s hymn (Psalm 23) and the anthem ( Rejoice in the Lord always) were found in Psalms and Philippians. They learnt how the Bible teaches us to live a good Christian Life.

The older cohort carried on with the Alpha Youth course, the question of the week being ‘Who do people think Jesus is?’ Our wonderful Reader, Sam pointed out the most important word in this question is ‘is’. This is not a historical question but relevant to the modern day.

MINSTER WORKER OF THE WEEK:  

Meet Sister Catherine

Hello, I’m Sister Catherine CHN (Community of the Holy Name).  The Community of the Holy Name is an Anglican Religious Order and we moved to Hessle two years ago. When we moved, I began to look for a church to attend and after going to a small church in East Hull for a time, practical difficulties in getting to this church on a Sunday meant I needed another church to go to that was more accessible via public transport! And here I am.

I joined CHN in 2006 and am the youngest Sister in the English province.  I am 58 years old and am the fourth of five children and have two elder sisters and a brother either side of me. I have three nephews and three nieces, two great nieces, 1 great nephew and another great nephew in production!  I came to faith rather late – at the age of 33 – as we weren’t a church going family. I was baptised in Southwell Minster in Notts in 1998.  I’ve been churchwarden and verger in my time before joining community.

I enjoy joining in with the Minster’s work although my duties as the Assistant Provincial Superior of CHN means I can’t get as involved as I would like to. I do come on a Thursday to join in at the Welcome Café and listening space, which I enjoy very much. I always feel very blessed when I have an encounter with someone in the street or in the Minster – a person who I believe God put in my way to speak with. When I go away from such encounters, I thank God for them. I believe that a simple word or act of kindness can change a person’s whole world and vision and though we almost always don’t know the effect of words or deeds, I always hope the Spirit can make use of them to open hearts and minds and let in the light.

PLEA FOR UKRAINE

It is sad that we need to keep asking for help for Ukraine however the situation is not improving there, and winter is upon them. Many are living in gymnasiums as their homes have been destroyed. Our Ukrainian friends are asking for any underwear for men and women please, also children from age 7 upwards. They are also desperate for a printer and any stationary for the schooling of the children.

Yes, there are still ten weeks to go however stock is selling very quickly. I was delighted to purchase a couple of lovely presents as I browsed around on Saturday.

A big ‘thank you’ to all the staff on the shop who always greet everyone with a smile. What would we do without volunteers?! Everyone working in the shop is a volunteer, they do a fabulous job.

Meet Veronica McKenzie, Veronica is probably one of our longest serving attendees at the church.  She started coming here at six weeks old and has been a regular attendee for over 70 years she has also seen seven incumbents.  Two of her family members served as Verger and she lived for a while in the flat above the old grammar school.  She can be found welcoming on Thursday mornings along with Minster Bear.   If you see her, please say hello and ask her about her time at Holy Trinity as she is only too glad to regale you with many stories about her time here.  You will not be disappointed!  I could sit for hours and listen to her but beware you will laugh until you cry, or she will have you in tears.   Thank you, Veronica, for all your years of loyal service to the church. I am delighted to let everyone know that Jane continues to make good progress. She is starting to do adult craft activities, so she isn’t bored! She is now on a high dependency ward so please continue to pray for her and her family.

A group of Hull Minster bell ringers were in attendance during Saturday’s Heritage open day.  They kindly gave bell ringing demonstrations on the hour throughout the morning and afternoon.  

Often unseen they are an integral part of the church.  Thank you one and all.

BE PREPARED – SEPTEMBER STUDIES, ALPHA AND START

Alpha and the Bible course start this Wednesday at 5:30 with soup etc.

EACH WEEK WE WILL BE PUTTING IN INFORMATION ABOUT PEOPLE WHO WORK IN THE MINSTER.

Our Verger, Jon Major, came up with the idea and so: meet our bell ringers!

A group of Hull Minster bell ringers were in attendance during Saturday’s Heritage open day.  They kindly gave bell ringing demonstrations on the hour throughout the morning and afternoon.  

Often unseen they are an integral part of the church.  Thank you one and all.  

WELCOME CAFÉ (from strangers to friends) & LISTENING SPACE

Welcome café last week was in the first week of the school summer holidays and we had lots of families visiting, enjoying the heritage activities but also the giant Jenga! It stood out how many people said they did not know the Minster had so much to offer families and they almost universally used the word ‘Welcome’ in their description of their experience.  One lovely lady said she felt as she entered the Minster she was wrapped in a blanket of welcome. What a lovely image. Our wonderful welcomers make it so easy to come through the door and the Welcome Café adds so much to the service a Minster is intended to offer. I realise I have used the word ‘welcome’ a lot, but I promise you it is the right word to use! Please come and join us on any Thursday between 10.30am and 3pm for coffee, tea and a warm Welcome. Soup served from 12ish.

From 12:30 soup will be served and drinks throughout the afternoon until 3 p.m.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

It is great to have ReNew and Hull City Council present during our Welcome Café held every Thursday in the Minster. These groups are there to help anyone with concerns or queries.

I must emphasise that this is available in the same way the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space are: to absolutely everyone.  That means you, your friends, family members, and even those who walk into the church for the very first time.

If you have any questions about either of these two organisations, or how you could be part of the Welcome Cafe and Listening Space team, please don’t hesitate to ask either Rev Irene or Tim.

TEDDY BEARS’ PICNIC

Just a taster of a great day with two hundred children in church. It’s amazing how appealing a zip wire and a parachute can be!!

In case I have missed thanking any volunteers – couldn’t have done it without you, what a great team. THANK YOU!

We are delighted to be hosting ‘Inspired: the word into action’ presented by the Riding Lights Theatre Company in partnership with the Bible Society.  This will be a great evening Bringing the Bible to life. We hope that you will encourage people to come along and bring friends and family. There are discount rates for families.

Many people are enquiring how Jane is after being taken ill just over two weeks ago. Although she is still very poorly, there are signs of progress. If you wish to send Jane a card please bring into the Minster and they will be delivered to her home address.

There is only family visiting at the moment. We will update you each week in Lifeline.

SATURDAY CONCERT SERIES

This Series is now approaching its second half, and we still have more exciting concerts for you to enjoy!

Over the last four Saturdays we have been entertained by the North Ferriby Ladies Choir, our own Vox Trinitas ensemble, Richard Sleight on flute and this last weekend, the Hull Barbershop Harmony Club.

We are now taking a short break but will return on September 30th with flute music from choir members Mair Mills and Thomas Williams.

It may not have been part of our worship however Hull Minster rang out with music and dance on Saturday night as we held our first Ceilidh. A group of fantastic musicians, many from our choir, led the music which included all dance favourites, Gay Gordons, Strip the Willow etc. and Katie Ogilvie did a stunning job as ‘caller’. From one to eighty-one everyone had a great time whether able to dance or just enjoy watching others. We are all looking forward to the next one which we hope to hold in February.

MINSTER WORKERS OF THE WEEK:   Jean and Fiona

Jean has been a very active member of the church for nearly 60 years, in fact she met her husband Chris here.

Jean has held, and still holds, many roles within the church.  As well as keeping our flower displays looking lovely, she is also a fountain of knowledge on the archives of Holy Trinity.  If you have any questions on the history of the church please ask her, she will be more than willing to help.

It is great to have Fiona back in the Minster helping with flowers. She is following in the footsteps of her mother who spent several years helping to make Holy Trinity (as it was then) look its best for worship and visitors.

MESSAGE FROM JANE OWEN

To all you lovely Members and supporters at Hull Minster. I wanted to thank you for your kind wishes of support and generosity. Your love and messages of support have given me strength and encouragement to keep trying to get better. I think of you regularly and hope that you are all getting the most out of supporting Shirley and Alastair in their work. I miss you all and have been pleased to see so many of you as visitors. Your cards have been overwhelming - I’ve loved reading your messages of support.

Castle Hill hospital has been terrific, with the nursing teams demonstrating unbelievable levels of commitment and dedication.  I’ve been taught how to breathe, cook, wash, and stay busy with card games and rural walks. Can’t wait to get back to Minster life, however!!

THE MINSTER SHOP

The Minster Shop has had an exciting time lately. A change in the layout and lots of wonderful new gifts have given it a brand-new look. Christmas decorations are now on sale. Congratulations to those members of the shop team who masterminded the display. It looks great. Many items will not be repeated so grab a gem or two whilst you can. Some deliveries are still due however so keep popping in to see what’s new. The new range of poppy brooches are selling fast. Details of this year’s Christmas card coming very soon.

BOOK LAUNCH

Tracey is a friend of Hull Minster often coming along to Welcome Café on a Thursday either on her own or with young men that are asylum seekers from our city. She works tirelessly to help these men in whatever way possible so they may cope in a strange city, often with little ability to speak English.
