Rev. Irene writes:
It was good to have such a great group of people at our Integration Café last week. Whilst talking to various groups it was decided that next month (10th November) we would make it a time of Remembrance and Hope. The café will take place as normal however there will be small areas representing different countries so that individuals can reflect, meditate, and pray if they wish to.
Please do pass the word around that this is taking place.
One of our Ukrainian ladies also asked whether we could collect warm clothing, shoes etc. for children from the age of 2 – 16. There is a truck going to Ukraine in two weeks’ time, (sorry about the short notice). She also was asking for school stationery, pencils, pencil cases, crayons, etc. She explained that so many people have only the clothes they are presently wearing, and children are suffering from the lack of equipment and warm clothing.
Many thanks
GIRLS’ BRIGADE
The 9:30 a.m. service was privileged this week to have the Girls’ Brigade, who meet at Hull Minster, participating in the service. They had put together this poster and they worked out their own actions. This Sunday the gospel reading was from Matthew 3:7-19 and Rev. Irene talked about them walking with Jesus. They would have seen all the wonderful miracles that he did. However, he couldn’t do all the work himself, he needed helpers and so he called twelve disciples.
On the board, initially, were anagrams of the names and the children came up to say what was the correct name. Irene explained that these disciples not only stayed but became committed to following Jesus. The wonderful clip from Sister Act, with Whoopie Goldberg and the choir singing “I will follow him”, followed and everyone was under no illusion that following Jesus is fun! Especially when we sang “Who breaks the power of sin and darkness”.
It was great to hear two of the children leading the prayers before the Commissioning as leaders of two members of our congregation: Gill Alden and Jill Harpham, who were both clearly enjoying their new roles.
By the way, the Praise Like Fireworks poster was completely designed by the girls.
THE GOLDEN BOOK
REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY
As we have done since 2014, except during Covid restrictions, during the afternoon of Remembrance Sunday, November 13th, a group of readers will read out the names of almost 3000 men of this city who gave their lives during World War 1. Their names are inscribed in the Golden Book which is permanently on display in Hull Minster.
We will begin reading the names at 1:00 p.m. in alphabetical order. The Minster will be open for all who wish to come and sit for a short time or longer.
There were many men who died in the conflict and are not listed in the Golden Book, and we are still adding names as requested. If anyone wishes to know if their relative’s name is in the Golden Book, please contact Dave Allum on 07856 942067 or dja15@allum.karoo.co.uk
If you would like to join the group of readers, you will be very welcome – please contact Dave as above.
BIBLE STUDY GROUP
Our Bible study on Hebrews, ‘A new and better way’, is going really well. If you can’t make it every week then dip in whenever you can, it is well worth it as we extend our knowledge of the book of Hebrews. To join go to the website and click on Church and Worship, then Teaching and click the banner at the top. You can also access the Bible Studies by clicking on the topic instead of the Teaching banner.
PLEASE NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO BIBLE STUDY ON 26TH OCTOBER (HALF-TERM).
Tim Wilson writes about project, recently started:
As part of Irene's address on Sunday 18th September, she suggested that we create a 'Warm Space’ within the Minster for those who are experiencing difficulties caused by the economic crisis.
Every Thursday between 10.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m. there will be an area set aside with a small team to meet with people and to offer them a warm drink and a hot lunch, of homemade soup and a roll and a dessert served between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Advice and support will be available.
If there are any readers of Lifeline who would like to be part of the team that will be delivering this new project, then please talk to Irene or Tim.
