Minster Lifeline 25/2025

Revd. Irene writes:

Do you recognise Ben and Becky?  Ben sings in the Minster choir and works as part of the church music project taking place in local schools. Rebecca and her husband Chris worshipped at the Minster until a few months ago, Rebecca leading worship at our 9:30 service.

Just over a week ago I was delighted to go to Middleton Hall to see a performance of Jesus Christ Superstar. You can see that Rebecca and Ben were leading the music side and Rebecca’s husband Chris starred as Jesus.

Fantastic performance of the last week of Jesus’ life. The garden of Gethsemane scene was so powerful. Jesus asks of his father that the ‘cup’ of suffering be taken from him but ultimately submitting to God’s will with the words ‘not my will, but yours be done’.

To see this reenacted, knowing what it meant to me and other Christians was very moving. Because Jesus accepted God’s will and gave his life on the cross he gave us freedom, took away our sins and allowed us to be children of God.

How special is that – to be a child of God. We are never too old to be a child of God. During this coming week I will be baptising a lady who is in her nineties. Praise the Lord!

John from Dignity celebrates being 60!

It was great to be able to join with John and his family and friends as he celebrated his 60th birthday. What a fabulous place the Minster is to hold such an event.

We normally see John as organiser of our remembrance services held in December so great to see him relaxed and happy.

URGENT PLEA FROM UKRAINE (FINAL WEEK)

Olga has asked if we could collect men’s socks, pants and T-shirts for use in the hospitals in Ukraine. They have run out of clothes for the injured to wear in the hospitals. Please bring into the Minster and Rev. Irene will pass these on to Olga ready for the next truck delivery.

Thank you

OUR STAR OF THE WEEK

Without a doubt, it’s our Flower Lady, Fiona.  This last week she entered a floral art class at Driffield show and won first prize.

Not only that, but she also won an additional prize for the best amateur floral art entry and so received a trophy as well.

Fiona says it has given her more confidence to offer her services to producing lovely arrangements for our sponsored flowers scheme and our church festivals.

At Hull Minster we offer anyone the chance to sponsor a flower arrangement or one of our yearly festivals, i.e. Easter, Harvest Festival and Christmas.

The reason to have an arrangement could be in the remembrance of a loved one, or it could be to celebrate a wedding anniversary or a birthday.

Donations can be from £25 to £40 or £50 to £65 for a festival.

We can put arrangements on the alter or in the Broadley Chapel.

To arrange or discuss having an arrangement  please email flowers@hullmister.org

GIRLS BRIGADE

We celebrated our last night of the academic year with food, friendship and bowling at Superbowl in Princes Quay. It was a wonderful night, although slightly worrying in some respects, we had some very fierce balls that I felt were coming back towards us. It turned out it wasn't the girls that we had to worry about but our leader Jill who dropped the ball.  All other balls made it thankfully down the lane. The highest score of the night was by Imogen who won with 115! It was great to see the excitement on the girls faces when they got a strike or spare.

A massive thank you to all our leaders, supporters, helpers throughout the year. This has meant so much to us as we help girls engage and explore the Christian faith in a meaningful way.

Thank you to the church volunteers who have put out the tables and chairs for us, it has been a big help. Thank you to Becky Dexter and Sue McGaw for your kind donations of Easter bookmarks and die cutter.

We wish the girls a happy and safe summer and look forward to their return in September.

Go in peace, Go in Joy, Go in love, Lauren

Val says: My thanks to Lauren, not only for the wonderful work she and her team do, but also for keeping us up to date with information and pictures.  We look forward to the autumn.

JUNIOR CHURCH

In the older group we talked about all the ways we had learnt about God this year and made Lego creations to celebrate this. For Jem and Gabriel, this was their final Sunday, so Archie prayed for them and gave a speech. Amy and Annabel presented them with leaver hoodies and a lifetime membership for the choir! Jonathan played the introduction to the final hymn with style and panache

GOODBYE TO TWO CHOIR MEMBERS – JEM AND GABRIEL – WILL MISS YOU BOTH – ESPECIALLY THE PINK HAIR!!

HERITAGE TALK

"Grave robbing": a desperate act of thievery, defiling the dead. Robert Atwood wrote that grave robbing "obliterates the memory of the ancient world and turns its highest artistic creations into decorations, adornments on a shelf, divorced from historical context and ultimately from all meaning." It's a dark and dismal history... but it's one that has had a large impact on Hull and the East riding for centuries.

Join author, local history expert and Friend of Hull General Cemetery Pete Lowden in his explorative Heritage Talk on grave robbers and body snatchers in Hull and the East Riding in the 19th century. See what motivated these people... and if they got away with their crimes.

The talks are free entry, so please feel free to join at any time in the Minster chancel or view us online through Facebook Live! James Cameron, Heritage Project Manager

PRAYERS FOR THE SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY

·         Father God, we pray for the families of the children involved in the bus crash this last week.  Bring peace into their hearts as they come to terms with this.

·         We pray also for the children around the world suffering because of war.  Bring peace to our troubled world we pray.

·         We continue to pray for the many people who are suffering in Ukraine and for a speedy settlement to this war.  We pray that people will be generous in their giving of essential clothing.

·         We pray for peace in the whole of the Middle East: where there is hatred, let there be love.

·         We pray too for the poor of the world who do not have enough to eat, may we do our part and give out of our comparative abundance.

·         We pray for all who have loved ones who are sick or who have died.  May they experience your love and peace.
