PENTECOST

This week Revd. Irene writes:

This coming Sunday we will be celebrating Pentecost a  significant Christian festival celebrated 50 days  after Easter, the festival where the Holy Spirit descends upon the apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ. You can read this great passage in the Book of Acts, chapter 2. The apostle Peter stands up and speaks to the crowds and it says 2000 plus came to Christ that day! This event marks the birth of the Christian Church; the apostles were empowered to speak in different languages and began spreading the message of Jesus to people of various nations. A job that we are commissioned to do today.

As I write this, next to me are the young people from the Sunday service. Gill Alden, Sam, and Tom are preparing flames etc. to remind us of the Pentecost symbols of fire, wind, and a dove, representing the Holy Spirit. It is a time of joy, renewal, and unity, reminding believers of the power and presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives and in the Church.

On Pentecost Sunday they will be descending on the congregation to remind them of the importance of Pentecost and to give thanks that the Holy Spirit continues to live in our hearts today.

CHRISTIAN AID

For the last few years, Jessie has walked over the Humber Bridge  to raise money for Christian Aid, usually with her husband Michael by her side.  Sadly, Micheal passed away just before Christmas last year, so me and Ann Wilkinson offered to walk with her.  We were also joined by Claire Wilkinson and John Swain on what was a very windy day.  We said a prayer before setting off, thanking God for this experience, and praying he would keep us safe.

It is not too late if you would like to donate or sponsor this worthy cause.  Monies can be given to Irene or Jessie.

Many thanks for your support.  Shirley

For the next session we will be thinking about the story Jesus told about the wise and foolish builders.
