Mezzo soprano Katie Beardsworth and pianist Daniel Swain have been performing together since 2006 when they met at the University of York. They have explored a wide range of repertoire together during this time, with the song cycles of Robert Schumann remaining a firm favourite.

Brahms’s song cycle Acht Zigeunerlieder (Eight Gypsy Songs) is a set of fiery snippets into aspects of 19th century gypsy life, from folk song texts that were originally Hungarian.

One of Schumann’s most famous song cycles, Liederkreis Op. 39 is a beautiful collection of settings of poetry by Joseph von Eichendorff. Written when the composer was suffering from separation from his future wife, Clara, many of the songs embrace themes of distance and loneliness. Schumann wrote to Clara that the cycle contained ‘my most romantic music ever, with much of you in it’.

Katie and Daniel will also perform a selection of their favourite art songs, as well as solo piano works by Schubert and Schumann.
