Minster Lifeline 35
IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT ANYTHING YOU WISH TO GO INTO LIFELINE MUST BE WITH VAL BY SUNDAY. THIS IS BECAUSE THOSE RECEIVING LIFELINE BY POST HAVE NOT HAD IT DELIVERED UNTIL FRIDAY AND WE WANT TO TRY AND IMPROVE ON THAT BY SENDIDNG IT OUT ON MONDAY. THE ONLINE WILL STILL GO OUT ON TUESDAY MORNING.
Rev. Irene writes:
I frequently receive ‘blogs’ from Gloria Gaither, wife of Bill Gaither who together, for many decades, have been promoting and presenting Gospel Music in the United States and across Europe. You will doubtless know the song Because He Lives – which they wrote on the birth of their son, and many, many more. Bill writes the music and Gloria the words. I received this poem just a few days ago and felt I needed to share it with you all.
TASTING SUMMER
For the tastes of summer I give thanks:
for swollen red tomatoes that explode their wonder into my mouth,
for berries and peaches, pears, and apples,
and all the fruits of the harvest orchards and berry patches,
I clap my hands with glee like a child.
For colour and textures in such wild variety
that they make a circus of the summer table,
and make every meal a glorious celebration,
I thank You.
For pies and cobblers, salads, and compotes,
for all the ordinary creativity this bounty inspires,
I thank You.
For recipes passed down that tie our tasting parties
to all the generations who have gone before
and join the hands in my kitchen to the hands
in the kitchens of Michigan and Indiana, Missouri and Tennessee,
Italy and Germany, Ireland, and England,
I thank You.
I dance my turn in the jig or reel or clog or hoedown
around our well-worn table.
GRIEF CAFÉ, this Thursday at 10 30. Please spread the word to anyone who may appreciate this time of fellowship and sharing about our loved ones.
BE PREPARED – SEPTEMBER STUDIES, ALPHA AND START
Alpha and the Bible course start this Wednesday at 5:30 with soup etc.
Start will be held in the Minster at 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. this Thursday and for the following five weeks.
EACH WEEK WE WILL BE PUTTING IN INFORMATION ABOUT PEOPLE WHO WORK IN THE MINSTER.
Our Verger, Jon Major, came up with the idea and so: meet our bell ringers!
A group of Hull Minster bell ringers were in attendance during Saturday’s Heritage open day. They kindly gave bell ringing demonstrations on the hour throughout the morning and afternoon.
Often unseen they are an integral part of the church. Thank you one and all.
This week, I’m starting with a double bill!
Our two wonderful editors of Lifeline.
Rev. Irene Wilson and Val Fotherby, both showing off their new spec free life after surgery. Both work tirelessly for the church as well as bringing us all up to date news of the life of Hull Minster. If you see them around the church please say hello you will be pleasantly surprised how welcoming they both are.
They are both eager to hear your story and you never know, with your permission it could appear in print.
Thank you both so much for what you do for the church. Jon Major
OUR AMAZING CHORISTERS
Our choristers undertake a programme of work to help broaden their knowledge of the church and of faith. Amy is receiving her RSCM Archbishop’s Award after lots of hard work on her part – well done Amy!

WILLIAM WILBERFORCE
REV WILLIAM KNIBB (1803 – 1845) MINISTER AND SLAVES’ MISSIONARY
Some years ago the family genealogist, now sadly deceased, told me that I am a cousin of the Rev William Knibb, who – alongside William Wilberforce and others – campaigned for the abolition of slavery. William was a Baptist minister and missionary whose patch was Jamaica, and I am (apparently!) a first cousin seven times removed. William was appalled by what he saw of how slaves were treated and determined to do all he could to 'slay the monster that was slavery.' This brought him into conflict – frequently violent - with the owners, traders and merchants who profited from slavery, and at times with the elders of his own church and missionary society who believed that his role was spiritual and that he should not interfere in politics.
He was a considerable orator. Note a particular speech in 1839 – 'The same God who made the white made the black man. The same blood that runs in the white man's veins, flows in yours. It is not the complexion of the skin, but the complexion of character that makes the great difference between one man and another." Compare this with a passage in Martin Luther King's 'I Have a Dream' speech in 1963 - 'I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.' As a Baptist minister MLK would have been familiar with Knibb's work. Did he have a hand in one of the greatest speeches of the 20th Century?
Don Knibb, Minster volunteer.

WELCOME CAFÉ (from strangers to friends) & LISTENING SPACE
Welcome café last week was in the first week of the school summer holidays and we had lots of families visiting, enjoying the heritage activities but also the giant Jenga! It stood out how many people said they did not know the Minster had so much to offer families and they almost universally used the word ‘Welcome’ in their description of their experience. One lovely lady said she felt as she entered the Minster she was wrapped in a blanket of welcome. What a lovely image. Our wonderful welcomers make it so easy to come through the door and the Welcome Café adds so much to the service a Minster is intended to offer. I realise I have used the word ‘welcome’ a lot, but I promise you it is the right word to use! Please come and join us on any Thursday between 10.30am and 3pm for coffee, tea and a warm Welcome. Soup served from 12ish.
From 12:30 soup will be served and drinks throughout the afternoon until 3 p.m.

TEDDY BEARS’ PICNIC
Just a taster of a great day with two hundred children in church. It’s amazing how appealing a zip wire and a parachute can be!!
In case I have missed thanking any volunteers – couldn’t have done it without you, what a great team. THANK YOU!

JANE OWEN
Many people are enquiring how Jane is after being taken ill just over two weeks ago. Although she is still very poorly, there are signs of progress. If you wish to send Jane a card please bring into the Minster and they will be delivered to her home address.
There is only family visiting at the moment. We will update you each week in Lifeline.
Please continue to pray for Jane and her family.
SATURDAY CONCERT SERIES
This Series is now approaching its second half, and we still have more exciting concerts for you to enjoy!
Over the last four Saturdays we have been entertained by the North Ferriby Ladies Choir, our own Vox Trinitas ensemble, Richard Sleight on flute and this last weekend, the Hull Barbershop Harmony Club.
We are now taking a short break but will return on September 30th with flute music from choir members Mair Mills and Thomas Williams.
