Minster Lifeline 37
Rev. Irene writes:
On Sunday we celebrated harvest at all our services in the Minster. As well as 9 30 and 11 we also held a civic service in the afternoon celebrating the harvest of the land, sea, and factory. It was great to sing the harvest favourites, “We plough the fields and scatter, For the beauty of the earth”, and many others all giving thanks for the abundance of food produced. We also remembered that through climate change, conflict, and economic hardship we see more and more people going without their ‘daily bread’.
We were delighted that all the produce we received will be distributed around several food banks in the area so thank you to everyone who contributed.
Below: three of our 9:30 congregatuion showing off their work on harvest.

BE PREPARED – SEPTEMBER STUDIES, ALPHA AND START
Alpha and the Bible course continue this Wednesday evening at 5:30 with soup etc.
Zoom Bible Study continues at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.
Start will be held in the Minster at 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. this Thursday and for the following five weeks.
MINSTER WORKERS OF THE WEEK
Meet your church wardens.
The Wardens role within the church is probably the most important role. They are in charge of the day to day running of the church and in the absence of the clergy take on full responsibility, answerable to the Archdeacon and Bishop of Hull.
Iain Ogilvie
Iain was born and brought up in Durham attending the United Reformed Church until he went to University in Keele to study Geography and Politics. It was at university where he met Katie and they married in Keyingham in 1997. After leaving University Iain worked for the Mission to Seafarers in Southampton as justice and welfare ship visitor and running the Seafarers Centre.
Iain came to Hull Minster in 2013 after moving to Ottringham from Northumberland to take on Katie’s Family Farm and Campsite. When in Northumberland Iain worked for the County Council overseeing the major capital regeneration projects. Alex and Ruth, their two daughters, were born in Northumberland. Alex is now at sea working in the engine room of Cruise ships, and Ruth can be found in the worship band at Hull Minster when she is not at University in Dundee studying Biomedical Science.
When not in church Iain likes to be walking by the sea, riding behind a steam train or sat with glass of whiskey (none of which happen often enough!)
Iain and Katie have both found plenty to do at Hull Minster and appreciate the friendships they have found since joining the church. On their first Sunday they sat in a service and watched the Muppet Christmas Carol, never did Iain expect to be Churchwarden but here he is, four years in.
Robin Alden
Robin was Baptised at Hull Minster in 1963. His parents married here, and he spent his formative years in Sunday School, then the Church Choir, and additionally in bellringing here in his late teens.
Robin went to university in London where he met his wife Gill, and after university they married and lived there for a few years before moving back to Hull. Do ask Gill about this move as she has almost forgiven him for it.
Robin and Gill have two lovely grown-up daughters who were brought up in this church and who both have careers, one in Hull and one in Whitehaven.
He is retired from a career in IT and is sometimes called upon when computer things don’t work!
Robin is now in his eighth year as Churchwarden, still sings in the choir, and is Ringing Master (i.e. helps lead the ringing in the bell tower).

It is great to have ReNew and Hull City Council present during our Welcome Café held every Thursday in the Minster. These groups are there to help anyone with concerns or queries.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!
Hello! As part of the Hull Minster family, you are warmly invited to a church ceilidh - on Saturday 30th of September at 6pm.
We've recently created a church-based ceilidh band and have put together a few dances - and would love to try them out!
Please bring along family and friends, and your own food and snacks. There will be a bar!
Entry is free.
JUNIOR CHURCH
The older ones enjoyed their Alpha course whilst the younger members went very quietly round the chancel looking at the gifts brought for harvest festival. After talking about where and how we get our food today and how different it was from the past, they then did some very impressive illustrations.
Celebration of Lay Ministries at York Minster
On Saturday Ellie and Anne joined Heather and others from the Mustard Seed Community for a wonderful service to celebrate lay ministries across the Diocese of York. People were newly licensed and authorised in lay ministry roles and the rest of us were invited to reaffirm our commitment to serve in lay ministry: ‘We share in Christ’s mission, called to proclaim the Good News in word and deed.’
We give thanks and pray for Ellie who serves with Revd Anne Richards as part of the chaplaincy team at Archbishop Sentamu Academy, and for Anne who is part of the chaplaincy team at Hull Minster, who is developing mission and ministry with adults with different learning abilities. Heather Black

WELCOME CAFÉ (from strangers to friends) & LISTENING SPACE
Welcome café last week was in the first week of the school summer holidays and we had lots of families visiting, enjoying the heritage activities but also the giant Jenga! It stood out how many people said they did not know the Minster had so much to offer families and they almost universally used the word ‘Welcome’ in their description of their experience. One lovely lady said she felt as she entered the Minster she was wrapped in a blanket of welcome. What a lovely image. Our wonderful welcomers make it so easy to come through the door and the Welcome Café adds so much to the service a Minster is intended to offer. I realise I have used the word ‘welcome’ a lot, but I promise you it is the right word to use! Please come and join us on any Thursday between 10.30am and 3pm for coffee, tea and a warm Welcome. Soup served from 12ish.
From 12:30 soup will be served and drinks throughout the afternoon until 3 p.m.

In case I have missed thanking any volunteers – couldn’t have done it without you, what a great team. THANK YOU!
We are delighted to be hosting ‘Inspired: the word into action’ presented by the Riding Lights Theatre Company in partnership with the Bible Society. This will be a great evening Bringing the Bible to life. We hope that you will encourage people to come along and bring friends and family. There are discount rates for families.

There is only family visiting at the moment. We will update you each week in Lifeline.
Please continue to pray for Jane and her family.
