Minster Lifeline 37
Rev. Irene writes:
Once again, we see the autumn rich colours beginning to show on our trees and we feel the coolness in the air. Yesterday we sang a new worship song at our 9:30 a.m. service all about the changing seasons of life, a reminder that nothing stands still, even our journey with Jesus goes through different stages. However, there is one certainty, Jesus’ love for us never changes.
1 CHRONICLES 16:34
“Give thanks to the Lord because he is good, because
his faithful love endures forever.”
We baptised William James Norris yesterday at the Minster. It was a great occasion with lots of children and a huge gathering of family and friends. Will’s dad is Billy who has been working at the Minster for the past 5 years on Phase 2 and 3 of the building project. Billy is an electrician and has built up a great relationship with our staff, particularly the churchwarden Iain Ogilvie. We were delighted to see him in a ‘different’ role yesterday, along with Jess his wife.
It is great to hear news from one of the younger members of our congregation. Please read what Amy has to say:
I have been coming to the Minster for nearly 4 years now. I came along after singing with my school choir and my best friend had also joined the Minster choir, so I decided to join as well. I really like being in the choir as you get to explore lots of new types of music. The people are really friendly, and I like being able to join in all the services including Evensong.
As well as singing in the choir I have also helped at a few events as a volunteer. For the Platinum Jubilee Street Party, I helped with the craft activities and also restarted the Coronation video every time it stopped. I also enjoyed holding a collection bucket at the door as people were leaving and managed to get quite a lot of donations.
Recently I volunteered at the Teddy Bears’ Picnic. I helped choose the craft activities and ran the ‘Make Your Teddy a Teddy’ activity with some help from Chris Fenwick. I also help out on the desk for the 9:30 Breakfast Church service.
I like volunteering at the Minster because it’s fun and you get to meet new people. It’s not just for adults! If people want to volunteer at the Minster, I would say do it – and be kind!
Rev. Louise writes about The Pilgrim Course
The Pilgrim course is a course which written by Stephen Cottrell, Steven Croft, Paula Gooder, and Robert Atwell and consists of eight different courses of six weeks which are divided into a Follow stage and a Grow stage. It is particularly aimed at people who are wanting to know more about the Christian faith, new Christians, or those who want to grow in their relationship with God.
The understanding of the Christian life as being like a pilgrimage inspires us to see our lives as a journey which leads to fullness of life in God. The course which will be starting next week will be considering Jesus’ teaching known as the Beatitudes, and we will spend time looking at these and other Bible verses, discussing what they mean to us, and considering together how these might speak into our everyday lives. Jesus’ teaching is always challenging, at whatever point we are on in our journey with Him, but it is wonderful to spend time with others to talk about these challenges and to hopefully enjoy this journey and grow in our understanding together.
If you would like to join this group, we will be starting on Wednesday October 12th, meeting in the Trinity Room (the new cafe), from 7:15 to 8:45 p.m., starting with tea/coffee and cake together. The course will last for six weeks. Please let me know if you are coming so that I can make sure I have a course booklet for you and hopefully get it to you before the course begins! I look forward to seeing you.
Flowers in Holy Trinity
When all the recent south aisle work began, keeping up with flower arrangements became problematic. The kitchen cupboards were lost and most of the items involved with the flower arranging were put into storage. A very limited number of useful items were placed in the north choir aisle cupboard. Dot Fullerton and I attempted to maintain an arrangement in the nave in a super vase that Dot had picked up in a charity shop. When Dot moved away from Hessle and I then went on holiday, had covid, and found the hot weather tiring, I’m afraid I did nothing about providing a display. Events such as Emma’s recent wedding, the death of the Queen, and harvest began to make me consider that it would be good to maintain a regular display. But here is the crunch point, I can’t do it on my own. My recent 80th birthday made me realise that I have limitations on tasks that take up time and often physical effort.
I would be quite happy to supervise a rota where willing members can offer to bring in fresh flowers and carry out their own arrangements. It might even be just an arrangement of flowers in a vase. Monies are available within the church budget for expenses. We now have a flower cupboard within the new storage area though I have yet to see how it will be used in a practical way.
Don’t worry about being an expert; my knowledge has only come by originally volunteering with Ilona Newman and Stella Barnes. As a church, we need to say a big thank you to both of them for the time they spent over the years when they worked on flower festivals and encouraged many to join in.

PS: This is open to ALL.
Tim Wilson writes about project that started last week:
As part of Irene's address on Sunday 18th September, she suggested that we create a 'Warm Space’ within the Minster for those who are experiencing difficulties caused by the economic crisis.
Every Thursday between 10.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m. there will be an area set aside with a small team to meet with people and to offer them a warm drink and a hot lunch, of homemade soup and a roll and a dessert served between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Advice and support will be available.
If there are any readers of Lifeline who would like to be part of the team that will be delivering this new project, then please talk to Irene or Tim.
BIBLE STUDY GROUP
Our Bible study on Hebrews, ‘A new and better way’, is going really well. If you can’t make every week then dip in whenever you can, it is well worth it as we extend our knowledge on the book of Hebrews. To join go to the website and click on Church and Worship, then Teaching and click the banner at the top. You can also access the Bible Studies by clicking on the topic instead of the Teaching banner.
