Celebration of Freedom

Great freedom figures from history and their legacy were celebrated at a special fringe event organised by Holy Trinity for The Freedom Festival.

A wonderful atmosphere was created at The Kingston Pub last Sunday as musicians performed, extracts from famous speeches were read and a talk was given about what freedom means to Christians.

Iconic freedom figures such as Gandhi, Martin Luther King and William Wilberforce –and the faith that inspired them – were particularly remembered at the event.

Music was provided by Terry Igoe, Danny Whittaker, Pete Hale, Rosey and Lisa and Kia Macpherson, who performed an emotional rendition of Amazing Grace.

Holy Trinity’s pioneer minister, Revd Matt Woodcock, who organised the event, said: ‘Our celebration of freedom event brought a taste of the festival to the Old Town. It was very appropriate as Wilberforce himself was baptised at Holy Trinity. Many people were touched by the awesome music and were given a better understanding of how most of the great freedom campaigners were inspired by their faith in Jesus Christ. He has been setting people free for the last 2,000 years’
