The BAFTA award winner ‘Marvellous’ will be screened in Holy Trinity, Neil Baldwin, the inspiration behind the film, will then share his thoughts on life, faith, and time in the media spotlight. The film will be screened at Holy Trinity Hull on Weds 13th April, with an interview and book signing afterwards.
Neil’s life has included time as a professional clown, official kit man for Stoke City FC, as well as having a long and established association with Keele University, from which he recently received an honorary degree. In his acceptance speech for the BAFTA he said:
“Everything’s come true. I said [the film] would win a Bafta. “I thank the Lord for what He’s done for me. And I’m very pleased the Queen is still going strong”.
Neil has had to overcome learning difficulties, and was treated poorly when he worked at the circus when he was younger. When he left the circus, his mother persuaded him to look for another job. That was when he applied for the post of manager of Stoke City FC! He was unsuccessful… but during the 1990s, manager Lou Macari made Neil first team kit man, a role he relished and where he used his clowning skills to good effect. Neil has gone on to establish the Neil Baldwin Association Football Club at Keele University, with presidents of the club including Kevin Keegan and Gary Lineker. Neil continues to welcome students at the university to this day.
In the film Neil is played by Toby Jones, who gives a very real portrayal of his attitude to life. A positive, inspiring, committed and faithful man, who, despite the challenges life throws at him, will hopefully inspire all of us on the evening of the 13th April. The evening will also act as our launch night for the START course, a course that makes no assumptions about background, experience or knowledge of the Christian faith, something that Neil believes all should have a chance to explore and ask questions about at some point in life.
It is a great pleasure that Neil will also officially open the 2016 CAMRA Real Ale Festival in Holy Trinity Church on Thursday the 14th April at 12 noon.
Doors open 6pm. Seats at 6:30pm. Tickets £3 in advance through Hull Box Office, or at Holy Trinity Church Parish Centre, in Trinity Square. Alternatively, buy from Dan Broom after church services.
